Recap / Pinky And The Brain S 3 E 2

Go To

In "Pinky and the Brain...and Larry", the duo gains a third ranger, and suddenly we are watching a parody of The Three Stooges.

In "Where the Deer and the Mousealopes Play", Brain, to gain control of Pittsburgh's steel mills, claims that he and Pinky are the last of the nearly extinct mousealope species... then gets Senator Del Monte to sign a document evicting everyone but the mousealopes from Pittsburgh.

Pinky and the Brain...and Larry has examples of:

  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: The episode is one big take that against the Kids WB network execs, who kept demanding that the show add a third character to the show, despite Pinky and The Brain being pretty explicitly a comedy duo who would gain nothing from a third character. To illustrate this, they made an episode where a third mouse named Larry appears, and the other two act as if he has always been there (he's even added to the theme song). Most of the episode's humor comes from the fact that Larry seems incredibly out of place and unnecessary to the plot, and that he keeps trying to insert himself into gags and situations where he adds nothing. Either the execs didn't get the joke, or they did and decided to take revenge on the writers, because a year later, a third character (Elmyra) was forced on the show, leading to an unintentional version of the awkwardness seen in the Larry episode, and then cancellation.
  • Funny X-Ray: Larry gets a Promotion to Opening Titles, and joins Pinky and the Brain as they are passing through an X-Ray. Larry is shown to have bones in his hair.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end, Larry changes his name to Art and leaves to pursue a musical career with Paul Simon. Right after Brain tells Pinky that they're going try to take over the world without Larry, a scientist opens the cage and introduces a new mouse, Zeppo.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: A Running Gag whenever Pinky and the Brain are referring to themselves. They always forget to include Larry and only belatedly add his name.
Brain: Tonight's plan is my masterpiece, Pinky... and, uh, Larry.
    Larry: Hi there!
Pinky: I like the lines, Brain, and, uh, Larry.
    Larry: I'm Larry!
  • Plank Gag: Larry accidentally knocks Brain down with a ladder.
  • Shoo Out the New Guy: Parodied. Larry inexplicably appears among the main cast. Pinky and the Brain at first regard him as if he was always with them until eventually realizing that his existence is completely unnecessary.
Brain: It's all about teamwork. That special chemistry. The yin and the yang.
    Larry: And Larry!
Brain: No, that's it! It's just yin and yang! There shouldn't be a Larry!
Pinky: Zort! Am I the yin or the yang?
Brain: I don't know, Pinky. But he is definitely the Larry!
  • Temporary Scrappy: Pinky and the Brain are joined by a third lab mouse, Larry, who serves no purpose except to turn the show into an extended homage to The Three Stooges and disappears for good at the end of the segment in which he appears.

Where the Deer and the Mousealopes Play has examples of:

  • Crying Indian: In Pinky and the Brain's propaganda ad telling everyone to get out of Pittsburgh, Brain is looking over the city of Pittsburgh and shedding a tear.
  • Fearsome Critters of American Folklore: Pinky and the Brain put on fake antlers and pretend to be the last of the "mousealopes".
  • Forced from Their Home: Del Monte announces to the public that he has just authored the Mousealope Protection Act and that Pittsburgh is now officially Mousealope Country. Unfortunately, he hasn't Read the Fine Print in the document Brain showed him. Brain then announces that he and Pinky now legally own all of Pittsburgh.
Brain: You have forty-eight hours to vacate your homes and businesses, or you shall be forcibly relocated by order of the Mousealope Protection Act. Thank you for your warm reception.
Pinky: Y'all come back now, ya hear? Troz!
  • Literal-Minded: Del Monte tends to take expressions literally, as shown in this news interview after the Brain has ordered everyone out of Pittsburgh.
Newscaster: Protecting the mousealopes: an act of environmental compassion, or a stupid political blunder? The debate rages on. Senator, critics are saying you favor cute little rodents over high-paying jobs.
Del Monte: Poppycock-a-doodle-doo! Del Monte hates the mousealopes.
Newscaster: Well, aren't you waffling from your previous position, sir?
Del Monte: Of course not. Everybody knows that Del Monte's a pancake man.
  • Song Parody: Brain's propaganda ad features a parody of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land".
Brain: [singing] Pittsburgh is my land.
    It isn't your land.
    Go find your own land,
    ‘Cause this is my land.
Please find your way to the nearest exit.
    Pittsburgh's for mousealopes only!
