Recap / One Tree Hill S4E09 "Some Give You Away"

Go To

"Some Give You Away" is the ninth episode of Season 4 of One Tree Hill and originally aired November 29th, 2006. The episode was written by Mark Schwahn and directed by Greg Prange.

It’s the day of the State Championship game, and the pressure of the occasion is felt across Tree Hill. Nathan - under instructions to throw the game - clashes with Lucas and Skills on and off the court; Brooke and Peyton are forced to put their differences aside when pregnant Haley collapses in pain, whilst Karen takes drastic measures to help Deb. Meanwhile, Lucas finally realises where his heart lies.

Contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: The episode opens with audio commentary that makes it appear that the Ravens lost the State Championship because Nathan threw the game, playing over reaction shots of Nathan, Peyton and Whitey seemingly reacting to the loss. It’s revealed halfway through the episode that the commentary is actually from the last time the Ravens were playing in the State Championship and Dan cost them the game by choosing to sit.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Lucas and Peyton kiss as confetti rains down around them following the Ravens victory.
  • Book Ends:
    • The Ravens’ season started with the team fighting each other at Midnight Madness; Skills and Nathan start fighting on the court over Nathan’s attempts to throw the game.
    • The episode begins with audio commentary of the Ravens’ State Championship loss from 18 years earlier playing over reaction shots of a heartbroken Nathan, Whitey and Peyton; it ends with commentary of the Ravens’s State Championship win playing over those same reaction shots.
  • Call-Back:
    • Peyton telling Lucas "I’ll be seeing you" after the State Championship invokes Lucas saying the same thing to Peyton after the on-on-one game in the Pilot, complete with a brief flashback.
    • Peyton tells Brooke about Lucas saying that he wanted Brooke next to him when all of his dreams come true in "Things I Forgot At Birth".
  • Cliffhanger: Daunte tries to run down Nathan, but Haley pushes him out of the way and is hit instead, putting her and the baby in danger; upon seeing his best friend on the ground, Lucas has a cardiac arrest because he didn’t take his HCM medication; and in a rage, Nathan seemingly beats Daunte to death, but Dan takes the fall and is arrested as police arrive at the scene.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Whilst Brooke, Haley, Peyton, Rachel & Bevin are driving to the game together whilst fighting with one another, they decide to role-play as the person their grievance is with. After Brooke makes an insensitive remark about Peyton's adopted & birth mothers both dying, Bevin chimes in with "I'm Rachel and I have red hair!".
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Haley teasing Nathan by telling him that his son will never let him live down his poor performance in the State Championship game, thinking that Nathan’s just playing poorly and unaware that he’s doing so intentionally.
    • The audio commentary of the Ravens’ State Championship win playing over the tragedy at the end of the night.
Announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, the Tree Hill Ravens are champions at last, and there’s not a dry eye in the house.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Brooke making another snide comment about Peyton’s dead mothers takes all of the fun out of the girls role playing as the person they’re fighting with.
  • Generation Xerox: Daunte admits that the reason he targeted Nathan was that he was Dan Scott’s son.
  • Happy Ending Override: The Ravens are champions, Lucas and Peyton are finally together… and then Daunte speeds towards Nathan and Haley.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Lucas suffers one after seeing Haley hit by a car; the fact that he played without taking his HCM medication probably didn’t help matters.
  • Internal Reveal: Lucas tells Skills about Nathan’s plans to throw the game.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Peyton tells Brooke that Lucas previously told her that she’s the one he wants next to him when his dreams come true. When Brooke asks why Peyton’s telling her that, Peyton admits that it’s because she’d have given anything for Lucas to say her, implying that this trope is in play.
  • Love Epiphany: The moment after the State Championship win when Lucas finally realizes Peyton is the one for him.
  • Meaningful Echo:
    • The final play of the State Championship game is the same as the final play of the Ravens’ play-off loss in "The Games That Play Us" with the notable difference of Lucas making the shot this time.
    • Peyton asked Lucas who he wanted next to him when his dreams came true in "Things I Forgot At Birth" and he answered Brooke; now, when his dream of winning the State Championship is coming true, Brooke asks him the same question.
    • Lucas’ moment of realisation that he’s in love with Peyton and telling her that he wants her next to him when his dreams come true is shot to echo their conversation after he defeated Nathan in the Pilot.
  • Meaningful Look: When Brooke asks Lucas who he wants next to him as his dreams come true, he doesn’t respond verbally but instead looks intensely at Peyton, implying it is her he wants next to him.
  • Missing the Good Stuff: Karen ultimately only gets to see the final play of Lucas' final basketball game, as she misses the majority of the game by diverting to drop Deb off at rehab.
  • Non-Answer: When Peyton told Lucas that she was in love with during the previous episode’s cliffhanger, he responded with "Oh." - the absurdity of his answer is lampshaded by Brooke and Skills.
Brooke: Boys can be so dumb.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Peyton, Brooke, Rachel and Bevin finding Haley in pain on the bathroom floor.
    • Dan upon realising the implication of Nathan not throwing the game after the Ravens have won.
    • Haley spots Daunte speeding towards her and Nathan before pushing him out of the way.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Lampshaded by Haley. When she speaks to him at half-time, Haley playfully tells Nathan to get it together or his son will never let him live down his performance.
  • Once More, with Clarity: The episode opens to reaction shots of a heartbroken Nathan, Peyton and Whitey, seemingly reacting to the Ravens' loss. Come the end of the episode, and it's revealed that the reactions are because of Haley being hit by a car and Lucas' heart attack.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Lucas and Peyton finally become a couple after three and a half seasons of Will They or Won't They?.
  • The Reveal:
    • Haley learns that she’s having a boy.
    • Rachel’s not failing calculus, Brooke is. Rachel just said she was in order to get Haley to tutor her so she could steal Haley’s keys to the Tutor Centre - and the cabinet where the exams are kept.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Dan leaves during the State Championship game, unable to watch Nathan throw the game. He returns when he hears radio reports that indicate Nathan hasn’t followed through in the second half.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • As Lucas tries to reason that Peyton’s confession of love was motivated by his happening to save her a few times, Skills points out that Peyton happened to be in danger but Lucas chose to rush in and save her.
    • When Nathan asks Lucas if he’s together with Peyton after seeing them kiss after the game, he simply notes that it’s about time.
  • Shout-Out: Gigi quotes the Chili’s "I want my baby back, baby back, baby back" BBQ ribs jingle.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is taken from the song "Some Give You Away" by La Rocca.
  • Wham Episode: The Ravens win the State Championship, and Lucas and Peyton are finally a couple; but Haley is run over by Daunte after she pushes Nathan out of the way, Lucas has a heart attack after neglecting to take his HCM pills, Nathan beats Daunte to death after he loses control of his car and crashes, and Dan is arrested as he takes the fall for Daunte’s murder.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Skills starts fighting with Nathan on the court when it becomes clear that he’s trying to throw the game.
