Recap / Maya And The Three Chapter 6 Maya And The Three

Go To

After several months away, Maya returns home only to find Teca under attack by the gods.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Amazon Brigade: Since all the men of fighting age were killed by Lord Mictlan several months ago, the standing army of Teca is now made up entirely by women. As the battle against the golems shows, they're more than capable of kicking ass.
  • Category Traitor: Vucub starts out hostile to Chimi, accusing her of abandoning her animal family who raised and protected her in favor of a bunch of humans who showed up only to seek her help. Chimi eventually stands her ground, telling him that Maya, Rico, and Picchu are also her family, and she's willing to do anything for them.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Chimi uses bird whistling to speak to Colibrí and the bird guarding her nest of eggs. Vucub later uses the bird language to covertly instruct Chimi on how to use her golden talisman.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Maya's pet hummingbird is called Colibrí, which is Spanish for, well, hummingbird.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. After a harrowing battle against several gods, Maya tearfully begs for her friends' forgiveness for lying to them. Rico hugs her just as she's saying that she'll understand if they never forgive her, which is quickly followed by hugs from Chimi and Picchu.
Rico: If we can't forgive you, how can we even forgive our-ourselves?
  • Group Hug: Maya and the three get into a big hug after they reconcile. Picchu tries to preserve his macho Barbarian image by asking if it can be a fistbump instead, but Maya isn't having it and quickly jumps up to hug him, with Chimi and Picchu quickly following suit.
  • Horrifying the Horror:
    • Maya puts the fear of her into the gods when she demonstrates the power of the Semi-Divine child of the Goddess of Death: the ability to kill the gods.
    • Rico realizes —and then goes on to prove— that Chivo fixed Estefan not because he wanted them to have a fair fight, but because the God of Dark Magic is scared of Rico's aptitude for Peasant Magic.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Maya finds out that her mother is pregnant.
    • Picchu finds out that the warrior who killed his family is Xtabay, the Goddess of Illusions.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: The Queen is noticeably pregnant in this episode. Despite this, she still takes up arms to defend her family and her people when the gods attack Teca.
  • Killing in Self-Defense: Maya swings Eagle Claw at Skull intending to knock the goddess out, but to her immense shock she ends up killing her. She's horrified by what she's done, but Rico gently tells her that it was either her or Skull, and she did what she had to do to protect herself.
  • Kill the God: Maya swings Eagle Claw at Skull expecting to knock her out, but instead she manages to kill the goddess, much to everyone's shock and horror.
  • Know When to Fold Them: The gods decide to quit the battle after witnessing Maya kill one of them, a feat that even a Semi-Divine being shouldn't be capable of performing. Bone, in particular, vows to avenge her sister before picking up one of Skull's gold trinkets and booking it.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Upon being informed that they each possess a golden talisman, a weapon capable of hurting the gods, the gang realize that the gods are afraid of them and what they can do. This is the point where they start fighting in earnest, turning the tide of battle.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: At first, the gang split up to fight the gods: Maya fights Bone and Skull, Rico fights Chivo, Chimi fights Vucub, and Picchu fights Xtabay. They get their asses handed to them. Maya eventually realizes that the four of them are stronger together and goes to find her friends.
  • Mushroom Samba: The healers give the King some very strong medicine after he's injured in the battle with the golems.
King Teca, trying to eat a pillow: Blue corn tortillas, blue corn tortiiiiillas!
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The episode opens with a number of flaming stone golems besieging Teca, and the Kind, Queen, and the rest of the army getting ready to fight them. By the time Maya and the three have reached the city only one golem is still standing.
  • Pregnant Badass: Queen Teca is still a formidable warrior despite having a noticeable baby bump. She's forced to sit out the second battle, however, due to pregnancy pains.
  • The Reveal:
    • A rather humorous one: Picchu's axes are called "Slice" and "Dice".
    • The weapons Maya, Rico, Chimi, and Picchu hold are golden talismans, made from the blood of the gods and capable of hurting the gods.
    • The Semi-Divine child of the Goddess of Death and a mortal man has the power to kill the gods.
  • Show, Don't Tell: The passage of time between the moment Maya and Co. recruited Picchu and when they reached Teca is shown by the Queen's baby bump.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The triplets' gifts to Maya on the day of her coronation: the golden pearl, the Bandit Queen's golden earring, and Colibrí. Maya holds them as her greatest treasures, and goes after Skull and Bone full force when they attempt to steal them.
  • Worthy Opponent: Vucub starts out hostile to Chimi, accusing her of abandoning her animal family in favor of a bunch of humans, but grows to respect her when she gives up an elevated position in order to protect a bird nest and defends her new human friends. During the battle between the four warriors and the gods, he tells Chimi how to activate her golden talisman through birds whistling, thus giving her side an advantage.
