Recap / Martha Speaks S 2 E 20 Marthas Steamed

Go To

On a hot summer's day, Danny is going to get some ice cream from the freezer, but changes his mind upon learning that T.D. put his shoes in the Lorraine freezer to cool down, after having been banned from putting them in his own freezer because Janice thought they affected the taste of the ice cream.

Then, Helen and Martha go for a walk, while complaining about the heat, only to notice a dog struggling to get out of a locked car. Helen and Martha instantly fear for the dog, and Martha runs for help. She asks several humans if they've left a dog in a car, and a man who works in the grocery store uses an unlocking tool to free the trapped dog, also giving her a bowl of water.

The dog barks, and Martha reveals that apparently, the other dog's name is Ruby and her owner's name is Ray. Martha wants to wait by the car until Ray comes back, but Helen thinks that's a bad idea because she fears Martha (likely due to her fur) will get too hot. Instead, they wait under the shade with ice cream (for Helen) and water (for Martha).

A man approaches, and Martha thinks that he looks mean due to his smug smile, but then he takes pity on Martha for being out in the heat, meaning he likely didn't lock Ruby in the car. The grocery store guy decides to page "Ray", but no one answers the page.

Helen writes down the car's license plate and takes the number to the police, who trace it down to an address. Then, it turns out that the car's owner is the grocery store guy. Helen and Martha chew him out, and the police try to arrest him, but the man claims he didn't do it and that his name isn't Ray, but Casey. Then, the police take Helen, Martha, Casey, and Ruby to the dog pound, where Kazuo reveals a woman has also lost a dog named Ruby, but this dog doesn't have a white ring around her eye.

Ruby then reveals what happened: Casey left his car door open, and she smelled donuts and climbed into the car to get them. Then, when Casey entered his car, Ruby hid for fear of getting in trouble, leading Casey to accidentally lock Ruby in the car. Then, a woman enters and reveals that Ruby is the dog she lost all along; the white ring was just powdered sugar and her name is not Ray, but Ra, short for Rachel. On the way home, Helen says that this is an example of why you shouldn't blindly follow food, but Martha disagrees and gets stuck in a trashcan looking for food.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accidental Misnaming: Due to Ruby saying her owner's name is Ra and her being locked in Casey's car, Helen and Martha think Casey's name is Ray.
  • An Aesop: The moral is given at the end (along with several joke morals) as "Don't jump to conclusions".
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Subverted. It seems like someone locked Ruby in the car, but then it turns out it was an accident.
  • Bait-and-Switch Character Intro: A guy walks up with a smug smile... and takes pity on Martha for the hot weather.
  • Big Eater: This episode shows two big eaters besides Martha:
    • Ruby, who got herself trapped in Casey's car to get some donuts, and helps herself to some food in the police car.
    • Casey, whose car is filled with a bag of donuts, a bucket of chicken drumsticks, and several apple cores.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Discussed when Martha wonders if the man is just pretending to take pity on her.
  • Broken Aesop: Played for Laughs: Helen gives the moral as not to blindly follow food, but Martha doesn't take that lesson at all.
  • Damsel in Distress: Ruby ends up trapped in a car on a hot day. This has been known to kill dogs.
  • Death Glare: Martha glares at the strange man when she thinks he locked Ruby in the car.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The episode title refers to both Martha being very hot since it's summer, and Martha being angry since she thinks someone locked Ruby in the car on purpose.
  • Flashback: We see how Ruby got locked in Casey's car.
  • Foreshadowing: Ruby is shown to be a Big Eater before the reveal that she locked herself in Casey's car by mistake to get food.
  • Gender-Concealing Writing: Because Ruby called Rachel by her nickname Ra, we're first led to believe she's a guy named Ray.
  • I Don't Think That's Such a Good Idea: Helen is doubtful about Martha's plan to wait next to the car, since Martha is furry and thus overheats more easily than Helen.
  • In-Series Nickname: Rachel's nickname is Ra, which causes her to be mistaken for a man named Ray.
  • It Tastes Like Feet: Apparently, Janice has banned T.D. from putting his shoes in the freezer, since they make the ice cream taste of feet.
  • Mistaken Identity: Martha thinks a random man, and then Casey, are Ruby's owner.
  • Oh, Crap!: Helen and Martha immediately fear when they see Ruby trapped in the car.
  • The Pratfall: When Martha first meets Casey, he falls on his butt.
  • Powder Gag: Downplayed. Ruby is initially mistaken for having a white circle on her eye, but it's just powdered sugar from a donut she stole.
  • Put Off Their Food: Danny doesn't want to eat the ice cream anymore after Helen reveals that when T.D. left his shoes in his own freezer, they got the ice cream dirty.
  • Space Whale Aesop: Helen gives the moral as not to blindly follow food or you'll get in trouble. In Ruby's case, "trouble" meant nearly dying in a hot car.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • When Martha asks two humans if they've left a dog in a car, they say, "No" in unison.
    • When Helen and Martha think that Casey locked Ruby in his car on purpose, they say in unison, "Shame on you!".
  • Spoof Aesop: Helen and Martha give three joke morals to the episode: being locked in a hot car can make a dog thirsty, and there is something tasty in the trashcan.
  • That Makes Me Angry: One of the things Martha says to Casey is "We're mad at you!".
  • Toilet Humour: When Casey is first knocked over, he spills a bunch of toilet paper.
  • Tropey, Come Home: Ruby wandered away from home and needed to be returned to Rachel.
  • Very Special Episode: Downplayed. The episode touches on the real-life issue of dogs being left in hot cars, but it's not all that dark since Ruby survives unharmed (the worst thing that happens to her is she gets thirsty) and it was an accident.
  • You Can Talk?: Casey is confused when he first hears Martha speaking.
