Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E18 "The Last Heartbreak"

Go To

A couple is found dead and holding hands a short while after the infamous Broken Hearts Killer dies in prison.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Brutal Honesty: Discussed. Amenadiel believes that Charlotte needs to know the truth about the time Goddess was inhabiting her body, but Linda says she's not ready to handle it.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Both subverted and played straight. It initially looks like radio DJ Chance's beleaguered intern is being set up as this; when Pierce and Chloe pose as a cheating couple to catch the killer, Lucifer and Dan catch him hanging around outside and arrest him — only to discover that he was there to film the angry ex's arrival to post on his website. However, the real killer then shows up, and it's someone else we've already seen — specifically, the new occupant of the original Broken Hearts Killer's house.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Broken Hearts Killer, as in: smashing his victims' sternum with a sledgehammer. And, of course, the fact that the victims broke their spouses' hearts.
  • Exact Words: Pierce tells Kay that "there's no rest for the wicked", so he doesn't get to rest. Kay assumes it's because he's a detective.
  • Flashback: Several from 1958, back when Pierce was investigating the Broken Hearts Killer.
  • Identical Grandchild: Maddie looks exactly like her grandmother, Kay.
  • Jack the Ripoff: The murderer is copying the M.O. of the Broken Hearts Killer (who has just died in prison) to commit a new string of murders.
  • Kick the Dog: Maze refers to Trixie as a "stupid little brat".
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Amenadiel's "What would I like?" speech is delivered in a way that makes it seem like he's addressing the audience.
  • Not Actually the Ultimate Question: When asked (offscreen) about what he wants, Amenadiel goes on a lengthy rant about how he's not certain about his Father's plans for him but will keep trying, how he's uncertain whether he passed his last test... And is the waiting in-between tests just another test? Then, the camera pans out to reveal a bewildered barista staring at him.
Barista: Okay. How about a large mocha with extra whip?
    Amenadiel: Sure.
  • Older Than They Look: Pierce's excuse as to how he was acquainted with Maggie's grandmother "back in the day".
  • Right Behind Me: Maze says some very cruel, hurtful things about Chloe and Trixie to Dan; it's unclear how much Trixie heard, but she definitely caught the "stupid little brat" bit.
  • Saying Too Much:
    • Pierce gets a little carried away and says that "we" were lucky to capture the Broken Hearts Killer back in the fifties. Lucifer draws attention to his slip of the tongue, but Chloe fails to notice anything odd about it.
    • The tour guide talks about how detailed the copycat killer is, down to interlocking the fingers of the victims. As soon as Chloe shows her badge, he groans and lampshades "that detail wasn't made public yet, was it?"
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Maze moves out of Chloe's house.
  • Visual Gag: Lucifer tells Chloe that, regardless of what happened between her and Pierce at the concert, nothing will come between the two of them. Cue Pierce squeezing between them to get to the crime scene.
