Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E17 "Let Pinhead Sing"

Go To

Chloe and Lucifer investigate the attempted murder of Axara, a famous singer, after she's targeted during a live performance.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Anger Born of Worry: Lucifer tackles the knife-wielding murderer to prevent her from attacking Chloe, ending up with a knife in his shoulder.
Chloe: What were you thinking, tackling someone with a knife?!
Lucifer: It's not me I was worried about.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Pierce has grown one. Dan lampshades it, and also claims that the length of the beard is proportional to the sorrow and you have to pull yourself out of the slump before you go "full Hagar."
  • Character Development: The Charlotte Richards we met a few episodes back wouldn't have cared enough about someone else to inquire about their state of mind, much less offer them her assistance.
  • Delayed Reaction: It takes Chloe pointing it out to him for Lucifer to realize that he has a four-inch knife embedded in his shoulder.
  • Fatal Fireworks: One of the victims is killed by these.
  • Friendship Moment:
    • Linda has one with Charlotte after the latter offers to act as mediator in the former's argument with Maze.
    • Defied by Maze, who's unyielding and refuses to accept Linda's apology; she's later shown snapping the battle axe in half.
    • Lucifer and Axara have one in the penthouse, with him confiding in her and her listening and even offering advice.
  • Hidden Depths: For a self-proclaimed "self-centered diva", Axara gives Lucifer remarkably good advice regarding his current emotional turmoil.
Axara: You can't let anyone come between you and the things you're passionate about in this life.
  • High-School Sweethearts: Played with. Axara and Cece were best friends since high school, but Cece also has a crush on Axara.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Axara manages to out-self-center Lucifer.
    • Growing out of this is part of Charlotte's journey towards becoming a better person.
    • Maze seems unable to accept that what she's doing is tearing Linda apart, who has bent over backwards to try to repair their friendship and refuses point blank to meet her halfway, focusing only on how everything has affected her and not Linda and Amenadiel.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: See O.O.C. Is Serious Business. After spending the whole episode trying to drive Chloe out of his personal "spotlight" in the hopes that she will no longer be in the firing line for his father's wrath for his continued defiance, Chloe - having scored two VIP tickets to Axara's show following the case - ends up choosing Pierce over him as her plus-one. It's only then that he realizes, heart-wrenchingly, that it was his own actions that caused it; no divine wrath required. Cue Lucifer - the Devil himself - showing up in Linda's office, on the verge of tears.
Lucifer: ...I think I've made a horrible mistake.
  • Never My Fault: When practicing her notes, Axara is quick to point out that Lucifer's piano is off-key when she can't get her own notes together. Granted, she was right, but still.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Upon witnessing Chloe tending Lucifer's knife wound, Amenadiel remarks to Pierce that if the Devil can have something like that, then there's always hope. He's glad that his little brother has found someone he cares about more than himself, but all Pierce sees is the Devil bleeding.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Linda knows that something is wrong with Lucifer the moment she sees him; after all, it's not that often that the Devil seems on the verge of tears.
  • Shout-Out: Axara is a curly-haired African-American singer whose repertoire includes both pop and RNB songs. Does it remind you of anyone?
    • This is lampshaded by Cece, who says that Axara would sing along to said Queen Bee, while she watched and ate cookie dough.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Linda tells Maze that she loved Amenadiel, and that he was her first real relationship with a man, and that she deserved to think about herself for once. Plus, Maze was the one who broke up with Amenadiel. The fact that they kept their relationship a secret from her showed how much she cared about their friendship. Maze's response?
    "Go. To. Hell."
  • Skewed Priorities: Axara and her managers refuse to stop touring and lay low because a killer is out to get her. Axara justifies this by stating that she has received countless death threats over the years; if she stops now, she would admit defeat.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Maze continues to refuse Linda's offer of reconciliation, because she is too angry at her betrayal. At the end of the episode, she is shown breaking her reconciliation gift: a battle axe.
  • You Are Too Late: Lucifer is literally only a few seconds too late from becoming Chloe's date for the Axara show, since it is heavily implied that, despite her reasoning that he doesn't want to spend time with her, she would have invited him if he showed up before Pierce.
