Tropes

  • Amoral Attorney: Jason Whitaker served as defense attorney for the Duvall family and comes across as an very scummy guy barring one Pet the Dog moment with Casey.
  • And Starring: Alfred Molina and Bradley Cooper.
  • Batter Up!: Casey tries to defend herself with her softball bat, but Milan yanks it out of her hands and then hits her with it.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Downplayed by Casey, who looks like someone beat the hell out of her. But her injuries seems to heal faster than they should. Although, she could be covering them with makeup.
  • Berserk Button: Elliot is enraged when he learns of Casey's beating, and immediately tracks down and threatens Gabriel.
    • Cragen doesn't reprimand Elliot for this, commenting he probably would have thrown Duvall out of a window.
  • Broken Bird:
    • Nina. As if being a refugee from The Yugoslav Wars wasn't bad enough, she was also raped during her stay in the USA and has to keep it secret.
    • Casey after being assaulted, is understandably a sobbing mess when she regains consciousness.
  • Defiled Forever: One of the reasons why Nina doesn't want to come forward with her rape is because as a Muslim, she believes she must be a virgin before marriage.
  • Disposable Sex Worker: Subverted. They think their initial victim is a prostitute, but that turns out to be false.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The strip club that the corpse was found close to has express rules on how rough sex can get, and will throw out customers if they get too vicious. Its bouncer also doesn't take kindly to bribery.
    • Jason Whitaker is a rather sleazy defense lawyer (as is typical for defense lawyers in the show), but he seems genuinely appalled by Casey's assault.
  • Honor-Related Abuse: Nina's brother Milan beats Casey within an inch of her life because she exposed his sister's rape, therefore making her impure.
  • Not Me This Time: Duvall is determined to be the doer in the rapes, but he really didn't have anything to do with the assault on Casey.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: The culprit is Gabriel Duvall, an eccentric rich guy that talks and acts like a 10-year old and is also a vicious serial rapist that targets illegal female refugees.
  • Robbing the Dead: A woman robs the first victim's body of all her money.
