Recap / Kevin Can Fuck Himself S 01 E 05 New Patty

Go To

As they drive back home, Patty is shocked at what Allison has just revealed to her and wonders if Allison is even capable of poisoning Kevin. Allison assures Patty she's not having "a moment".

The morning after returning to Worcester, Patty is greeted by Kurt. After admitting her apprehension over Kurt's proposal, they realize their relationship isn't working and they want different things. Kurt breaks up with Patty.

Kevin excommunicates Patty from his friend group because she didn't get him a burger from the Top Dog restaurant. Patty isn't very sad over this, however. Later, while opening up the salon, she finds a man named Nick waiting for her, having gotten inside by picking the back lock. He reveals that his aunt, a frequent client of Patty's, had provided him with some generic oxy pills which he himself sold off to other customers and small-time dealers in the Worcester area, making Patty a much bigger deal in the oxycodone black market than she thought. Detective Tammy then comes into the salon, following up on some leads around the area, and then asks Patty if she'd like to accompany her to a party later. Patty is taken by surprise but accepts the invitation.

Kevin, Neil, and Pete attempt to replace Patty in the friend group. They try to get a man named Paddy as her replacement, but Pete is put off by the other man. Paddy turns out to be a bit too intense for the other guys' liking and they realize they need Patty back in their group.

Allison, sick of kowtowing to obnoxious customers, quits her job at the liquor store and takes a new one at Sam's diner, where the two of them begin to have an affair.

That night, after Kevin bemoans Allison quitting her job at the liquor store, Patty meets up with Allison, revealing she's found the bottle of oxy Allison swiped off the trucker in Vermont. Patty needs the pills to get Nick off her back, reasoning to Allison that her plan to poison Kevin with the pills has no guaranteed chance of working. Allison insists things will be fine. Patty then tries to talk to Kurt to smooth things out, but Kurt stands by his decision, admitting he had been acting impulsively and that he doesn't really know Patty at all.

Allison has Sam recreate a Top Dog burger. After realizing Patty's right that her plan to poison Kevin won't work, she makes it look like Patty bought Kevin a burger to make up for her "act of betrayal" from earlier. Patty helps to drive Paddy away and Kevin lets her back to the group. Later, Allison gives Patty the pills, but she is not giving up on her plan to kill Kevin. Patty suggests they need to think outside the box and use the drug dealer investigation to their advantage.

Tropes

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Patty became a big deal in the oxycodone black market of Worcester completely by accident. She thought she was mostly just helping out some people here and there but then some of her clients resold the drugs without her knowledge, making her a much larger figure in the Worcester underworld than she thought.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Patty acknowledges that Allison is committed to her plan of killing Kevin... and then asks her a simple question.
Patty: Okay, you can go through with it. But are you really sure that it'll work?
  • Ax-Crazy: Paddy is a bit... unhinged. For one thing, he likes to play paintball in the Walmart parking lot shooting at anyone that doesn't put their cart away, and branded Neil with a P on his side.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Twice with Kevin in similar situations.
    • In the first one, Kevin has Allison and Patty sit down on the couch and he asks them if they didn't think he'd see what they did in Vermont. Allison and Patty are tense, wondering if he's found the gun and/or the oxy pills... until he shows them the Top Dog burger wrapper. Turns out he's mad that they didn't get him a burger from there, even though it would have become cold by the time it got to him (Kevin retorts he would have just reheated it in his toaster oven).
    • When Allison gets back home, Kevin tells her to sit down and starts interrogating her. Allison tries to play innocent, wondering if Kevin discovered she just had sex with Sam. Turns out he's upset because she quit her job at the liquor store, meaning they don't get her employee discount anymore.
  • The Cameo: Jon Glaser plays Paddy.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Nick first appeared in the pilot episode as a customer at the liquor store. Here, he's revealed to be a mid-level drug dealer who was being directly supplied with oxy pills by Patty's side hustle.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Patty gets a lot of spotlight in this episode.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Patty spells out to Allison that even if she could go through with poisoning Kevin with the oxy, there's no surefire guarantee it will work. For one thing, Kevin, in Patty's words, is a "tank" with a surprisingly high tolerance for drugs and alcohol, so it's possible the oxy could just make him pass out or get really nauseous, but not actually kill him. She also adds that Allison hasn't given any consideration to how to handle the aftermath of Kevin's death if she actually successfully killed him because Allison will be under suspicion from the police and her neighbors, and being a suspected Black Widow will permanently affect her reputation for the rest of her life, and that's also not counting how Patty (who's already under investigation herself) could get flagged as an accomplice. After taking that into consideration, Allison concedes she needs a better plan.
    • Kurt admits that he acted impulsively when he proposed to Patty, realizing that he doesn't know her all that well even after dating her for three years and marrying her would be a massive mistake on his part.
    • Patty herself never stopped to think that the generic oxycodone she was selling was being used for less than noble purposes. Nick even calls her out on this.
  • Differing Priorities Breakup: Kurt is tired of feeling like he's stuck in a rut while Patty's fine with everything just staying the same.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In addition to kicking her out of his friend group, Kevin also called Kurt to tell him Patty was cheating on him as punishment for her not bringing Kevin a Top Dog Burger.
  • Dramatic Irony: As was revealed in "Live Free or Die", Kevin once got Allison fired from a previous job because he suspected she was having an affair with her married boss. Now Allison is actually having an affair with her married boss Sam and Kevin is completely unaware.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When he and the others befriend Paddy after Kevin kicks Patty out of their group, Pete is the first one to realize that Paddy is unstable.
  • Evil Counterpart: Paddy is this to Patty.
  • Grew a Spine: Allison calls out a customer for rudely bumping into her and when he gives her an insincere apology, she tears into him further and ultimately decides to quit working at the liquor store.
  • Hidden Depths: He may be a milquetoast dork, but Kurt is observant enough to see that Kevin is a total idiot and he displays a good deal of fortitude in standing by his decision to break up with Patty after realizing he'd made a mistake in impulsively proposing to her.
  • Reaction Shot: We don't get to see Kevin down the Top Dog Burger replica in two bites, but we do see Patty's face when she sees it and she's taken aback.
  • Squee: Patty practically cheers on Allison when the latter stands up to an obnoxious customer that deliberately bumped into her and then quits her demeaning liquor store clerk job.
  • Status Quo Is God: Patty being exiled and then let back into Kevin's friend group is played as this in the sitcom segments.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: After telling off a customer at the liquor store for rudely shoving her, and Diane trying to downplay it by saying it's just part of the job (as well as trying to appease said customer with a free bottle of booze), Allison quits on the spot and takes a bottle of wine as her "gold watch".
