Control

"Direct action is not always the best way. It is a far greater victory to make another see through your eyes than to close theirs forever."
Kreia

As Jaune continues his classes at Beacon, he unknowingly uses the Force in his everyday interactions. Later, he confides the truth about himself to Pyrrha.

Tropes in this chapter include:

  • Amusing Injuries: Nora breaking Ren's ribs and knocking him unconscious is treated as something funny as she does it in order to give Jaune and Pyrrha some alone time.
  • Big Word Shout: Doctor Oobleck shouts "Detention!" in response to Cardin accidentally flicking a paper football at him in the middle of class.
  • Blackmail Backfire: When Cardin tries to blackmail Jaune with the knowledge that his transcripts to Beacon were forged, Jaune uses the Jedi mind trick to make Cardin back off on his threat and mind control Cardin into never bothering him again.
  • Blatant Lies: After Cardin accidentally flicks a paper football at Dr. Oobleck's chest while trying to aim for Jaune's head, his reaction when the entire class turns to stare at him is to weakly fib "It, uhh… wasn't me." Nobody buys it.
  • Compelling Voice: Once again, Jaune unknowingly uses the Jedi mind trick to mentally compel Cardin to back off on his threat to blackmail Jaune.
  • Dope Slap: Pyrrha gives Jaune one in reaction to him joking around about Pyrrha assassinating him.
  • How Is That Even Possible?: When Pyrrha explains to Jaune her theory that he's some sort of Reincarnation, a flabbergasted Jaune asks if that's even possible.
  • If Only You Knew: Pyrrha considers her own idea of a person possessing the power to reincarnate while possessing the knowledge and abilities of their past lives to be ridiculous and calls it something out of a science-fiction comic. While this theory is incorrect when applied to Jaune, it's dead-on accurate in regards to Ozpin.
  • Klingon Promotion: Discussed and played for laughs. When Pyrrha drags Jaune onto the rooftops of Beacon Academy to talk together alone, Jaune jokingly asks her if she brought him up here to kill him and take his place as leader. Pyrrha gives him a Dope Slap in response.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: Nora knocks out Ren so she can give Jaune and Pyrrha time alone together in hopes that romance develops between them.
  • Martial Arts and Crafts: Doctor Oobleck uses a paper football like a shuriken and throws it so hard that it embeds itself into a wall.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: Through his Force senses, Jaune dodges the paper football Cardin flicks at his head by tilting his head to the side without even looking behind him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Cardin has this reaction when Jaune dodges his paper football and he sees it go flying towards Dr. Oobleck.
  • Promise Me You Won't X: Before confiding in Pyrrha about his dreams, Jaune asks her to promise that she won't think he's crazy.
Jaune: Before I explain, I want you to promise me something Pyr. Promise that you won't think I'm crazy.
Pyrrha: Jaune, what are you talking about? What's going on?
Jaune: Please Pyr! I need to hear you say it!
Pyrrha: Jaune, I promise on my name that I will not think you are crazy.
  • Quizzical Tilt: Pyrrha tilts her head in interest while listening to Jaune explain his theory that his powers are tied to his emotions.
  • Spider-Sense: During Professor Oobleck's class, Jaune's Force-sensitivity gives him a sixth sense that lets him know when Cardin is about to flick a paper football at his head, allowing him to dodge it.
  • Tap on the Head: Nora uses the "elbow in the solar plexus" variant to knock out Ren so she can give Jaune and Pyrrha time alone. This actually ends up breaking some of Ren's ribs, though it's all played for comedic effect.
  • This Is Reality: When Pyrrha tells Jaune her theory that he has some sort of reincarnation Semblance that gives him the abilities of his past lives, she admits that even she finds that difficult to believe and notes how it sounds like "something out of a science fiction comic."
  • Wham Line: After Jaune thinks he hears Pyrrha whisper the answer to Professor Oobleck's question, he thanks her for her help at the end of class, leading to this exchange.
Pyrrha: It's no problem Jaune, partners are supposed to help each other out. I'm just glad you were able to decipher my hand gestures.
Jaune: I… thought you whispered the answer to me.
Pyrrha: [confused] I didn't do anything like that.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Jaune asks "What are you?" to the mask at the end of the chapter. He gets no response.
