Recap / Freelancers S2 E7 "Legend Quest"

Go To

The episode opens with a brief history of Legend Quest Park. The creator of the fantasy theme park gave it to his eldest grand-daughter, causing the younger one to rebel and become an evil witch. The park has hired VPC to shoot all of their videos after they spend one day in the park and prove their worth.

Although Zona is worried about the park's sketchy waivers, the park's owner Lady Violet gets everyone in VPC to sign them. Violet sends them on a quest to retrieve her silver locket from her sister, the evil Witch. Just as VPC starts this quest, Zona trips on a tiny, tiny stick and breaks her leg. The rest of VPC decides to leave Zona behind, rationalizing that their quest will heal her.

The Witch visits Zona and tricks her into revealing her friend's location and weaknesses. Ryan and Devin meet a Princess and Troll and they respectively fall in love, at least during a musical number. Owen and Micah continue their quest with the goal of getting enough money to afford their prized most possession: a Sofa Boombox.

  • Creator Cameo: Jeremy Warner, who directed this episode and many of the previous episodes, voices the opening narration. He also appears as the shirtless man in the background of VPC's video for Legend Quest Park.

  • No MacGuffin, No Winner: Zona destroys the silver locket which they had been questing for, which apparently had a flash drive with the park owner's family fortune in Bitcoin.
  • No OSHA Compliance: Implied. Lady Violet shreds some OSHA reports.
  • "Setting Off" Song: The first musical number, led by Lady Violet to get VPC to sign some sketchy waivers, is about how great adventure is while ignoring workplace safety measures.
  • Our Trolls Are Different: Blarg the troll is a humanoid who spawned from parental fungus. Devin herself says she's one sixteenth troll.
  • Running Gag: Ryan's heart problems. Ryan says he has aorta problems at the beginning of the episode. During a musical number he sings that he doesn't need health insurance because the woods will be his heart medicine. In the musical love song Ryan sings that the princess makes his heart beat normally.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Ryan wonders if they'll meet Phineas and Ferb in Legend Quest Park.
    • The lyrics in the song Devin sings to the Troll mirror the song "I'm a Believer" in Shrek.

  • Stock Punishment: The Witch uses this to trap Owen, combined with Tickle Torture.

  • Title Drop: Lady Violet sings, "Our plan will surely fail if she lures you off the trail, so this is your test, you're starting your legend quest." The Witch mirrors these lyrics in her song to Zona.
  • Tricked into Signing: Zona at first refuses to sign the park's abusive waivers, but a musical number from Lady Violet and pressure from her friends get her to sign one.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Upon meeting Lady Violet, Owen tells her, "M'lady, forsooth privy and wherefore." Violet is not impressed.
