Recap / Freelancers S2 E5 "Doodles Chips"

Go To

Due to a misunderstanding, VPC gets a job scraping film off a man's speedboat for $500. They quickly ditch this job when Zona gets an offer to film a Kickstarter for the local chip company Doodles Chips for $20,000. VPC arrives at the chip company's headquarters and finds everyone there seems to be happy and their chips apparently taste amazing. What's more, the two co-CEOs offer to pay them upfront before they even start filming.

However, it soon becomes apparent that Doodles Chips is much darker than it originally seems. While filming the video, the CEOs randomly insist that they aren't a cult and won't brainwash you. After VPC notices a Doodles employee trapped in a closet, they realize that Doodles is definitely a cult and they have to escape before they're all brainwashed.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: A variant occurs when Owen questions whether he was too ugly for the Doodles Chips cult to want to brainwash him. However, he soon realizes it's because he threw up all their chips.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Zona gets angry at the mention of her "skin thing" while everyone nervously denies talking about it.
    • The minivan driver gets mad when Micah asks why he makes his kids' lunches in the car.
  • Bland-Name Product: After getting a film-scraping job for a shipyarder, Zona says she'll never trust Gregslist again, though Devin says at least they didn't use Legslist, both plays on the name of the website Craigslist.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Owen's micro-stomach is what prevents him from being mind-controlled by the cult, as he is unable to fully digest the drugged Doodles Chips.
  • Crapsaccharine World: Everybody at Doodles Chip seems to be happy, but turns out it's part of a brainwashing cult.
  • Cult: Doodles Chip brainwashes and kidnaps people using drugged chips, apparently to create some sort of global tragedy.
  • Drunk with Power: When Owen realizes the Doodles Chips cult will do anything he asks, he commands them to worship him and becomes their new leader.
  • Freudian Slip: One of the Doodles Chips co-CEOs/cult leaders mentions that they're trying to create a global tragedy—er, strategy.
  • Girls with Moustaches: Devin inexplicably has grown a beard during the three months that she was brainwashed by the Doodles Chips cult.
  • Huddle Shot: Once VPC realizes Doodles Chips is a cult they huddle and try to come up with ways to escape, all while eating the company's chips.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: At the end of this episode, the rest of the VPC team is watching Owen scrape the boat, and the man who hired them has shared with them his unidentified yellowish drink. He tells Owen that he will only know where the film came from if they test his urine. Devin immediately looks concerned about her drink. (The man later says it's "alligator yolk.")
  • It Kind of Looks Like a Face: Owen's apparent resemblance to the man on the Holy Doodle leads them to believe he's The Chosen One.
  • Lookalike Lovers: Ted and Sandy, the co-CEOs of Doodles Chips, have matching hairstyles so VPC originally thinks they're siblings. They take this as a compliment but then
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: The VPC crew is surprised and flattered when the Doodles Chips co-CEOs say they're big fans. Then Devin asks, "Even Owen?" Owen sheepishly admits he was thinking the same thing.
  • Shout-Out: The names of two co-CEOs, Ted and Sandy, reference the casino magnate Ted Binion and his girlfriend Sandy Murphy.
  • Stepford Smiler: Brainwashed members of the Doodles Chip cult have this smile, especially Devin which is really out of character for her.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Owen's microstomach gets a speaking role.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: While filming the Kickstarter video, the Doodles Chip CEOs insist "we're not a cult." VPC says they should avoid using the word "cult", so instead they try saying "we will not brainwash you."
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: More of a neutral example, originally Played for Laughs. Ryan's idea of "dress to impress" involves putting on his grandmother's clothes.
