Recap / Family Matters S 7 E 21 Scammed

Go To

Eddie and Waldo visit a fancy lounge with the hopes of meeting the Chicago Bulls, but soon discover that it's run by con artists. Meanwhile, Myra accidentally gives Laura a facial mask made of Steve's super glue, and Hilarity Ensues.

Tropes seen in this episode:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Myra proudly calls her special facial mask the "Monkhouse Miracle Mask".
  • An Aesop: Beware shady businesses. Fall for their temptations, and they'll catch you hook, line, and sinker.
  • Aside Glance: The moment Myra tells Steve that she put "milk" in Laura's facial mask, he glances right at the camera with an "Oh boy..." expression, knowing that trouble is about to brew.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Waldo tries informing Carl about Eddie's situation without spilling too many details, but he does so by reciting a bunch of lines that he clearly had to memorize.
  • Batman Gambit: When Carl visits the club, Frank thinks he's just a concerned parent who's there to get his son out of trouble. What he doesn't know is that Carl is also a cop, he brought along backup, and he's about to arrest him for swindling people and allowing underage patrons into the bar.
  • Blatant Lies: The doorman claims that the Ace High Lounge is the Chicago Bulls' favorite hangout spot. This convinces Eddie and Waldo (who had just attended a Bulls game) to enter.
  • The Con: The Ace High Lounge is a sleazy nightclub run by a con man named Frank. He overcharges for all of its services, and threatens his patrons with bodily damage if they don't pay their bill.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Laura, as she grows more frustrated with the mask.
Steve: One or two simple jerks should get this baby right off your face.
Laura: I hope so, 'cause two simple jerks got this on my face.
  • Edible Ammunition: In an end credits gag, Steve Urkel becomes a playable character in "Grandma Ninja", and one of his moves has him chucking huge pieces of cheese at the opponent.
Steve: Have some CHEESE! Have some CHEESE!
  • Ironic Echo: As Carl arrests Frank, he throws all of the latter's previous lines right back at him.
Frank: Now wait a minute, you should've told me you were a cop!
Carl: Well, all you had to do was ask. Now I guess you learned a valuable lesson.
Frank: Okay now wait a minute, I think this is one big misunderstanding...
Carl: Well, I guess you could chalk it up to experience.
    Frank: C'mon, this isn't fair!
Carl: You wanna whine? Tell it to the judge.
  • Karma Houdini: Frank, the waiter, and one of the bouncers are the only ones who get arrested at the end. His other accomplices (namely the doorman and Yvette) quickly look the other way as he's being cuffed.
  • Mood Killer: Drinks in hand, Eddie and Yvette propose a romantic toast. Then Waldo chimes in.
Eddie: A toast, to chance meetings and Love at First Sight.
Yvette: To warm, exciting moments between strangers in the night.
Waldo: I see London, I see France, I see Yvette's underpants.
  • Never Mess with Granny: "Grandma Ninja" is a fighting game starring an ass-kicking granny. To no one's surprise, Estelle is astoundingly good at it.
  • Papa Wolf: As usual, Carl comes to the rescue and gets Eddie out of hot water, arresting Frank in the process.
  • Properly Paranoid: En route back home from the game, Steve is quick to find out how sleazy the Ace High Lounge is, and warns his friends not to go in since they're underage. As Steve hightails it home, Eddie and Waldo do not heed his warning and enter anyway, then realize too late he was right after being slapped with a Shockingly Expensive Bill.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Chondra attempts to seduce Waldo, but he's so awkward that she immediately gives up and walks away.
    • Once Carl reveals that he's a police officer, all of Frank's associates book it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • With the mask stuck on her face, Laura exclaims that she looks like the Swamp Thing. Steve also compares her to "Jim Carrey in The Mask" and proceeds to do a Carrey impression.
    • Estelle plays a fighting game called "Grandma Ninja", a parody of Mortal Kombat. It even has digitized actors.
  • Sticky Situation: Laura finds herself in one when Myra coats her with a facial mask mixed with super glue.
  • Title Drop:
Eddie: You know, Waldo, I think we're being scammed here.
  • Wham Line:
    • After buying some champagne and two roses, Eddie and Waldo prepare to leave the Ace High... until Eddie reads the bill.
    Eddie: Five hundred dollars?!
    • After Carl tells Frank the crimes he just committed by letting underage Eddie into the club and extorting him, Frank gets dismissive.
Frank: What makes you such a big expert?
Carl: This. (Shows police badge) I'm Lieutenant Carl Winslow, Chicago PD. You're under arrest.
  • Wham Shot: Steve sticks a sign on the fridge warning everyone that the bottle of milk inside is actually glue. Then it falls off behind his back, just out of sight from Laura and Myra...
  • The Vamp: In a ploy that's no doubt part of Frank's scheme, two sexy ladies enter the lounge to seduce Eddie and Waldo. One of them charms Eddie into buying her expensive roses and a bottle of champagne, racking up his bill to a whopping $550.
  • Voice of Reason: Steve tries to dissuade Eddie and Waldo from entering the Ace High Lounge, reminding them that they aren't old enough to drink. Neither of them listens.
