Recap / Fairy May Cry, 20 "A Devil's Home with the Fairies"

Go To

Thanks to Natsu and Dante, Fairy Tail's missing members have been rescued and Vergil is forced to retreat. Now Dante must decide if he truly belongs in the guild, feeling responsibility for recent events.

  • Bittersweet Ending: More sweet than bitter given Dante and Natsu manage to defeat Vergil, Lady is convinced to join Fairy Tail, and Dante himself is talked into staying. On the bitter side, Vergil manages to escape (vowing to return) and Dante mentions that him joining Fairy Tail will paint a target on them from most high ranking demons.
  • Blood Knight: Natsu and Dante end the chapter eagerly having a sparring match.
  • Combination Attack: Discussed by Makarov, who notes that Dante and Natsu pulling a Unison Raid off so soon after meeting each other is quite impressive.
  • Continuity Nod: When everyone is assuring Dante they can handle whatever demons come their way, Gajeel remarks Vergil made a mistake picking a fight with Fairy Tail just like he did, a nod to the guild war with Phantom Lord.
  • Family of Choice:
    • Even beyond the usual Fairy Tail dynamic, Natsu internally calls Mirajane his big sister.
    • Dante more or less accepts Fairy Tail as his near the end of the chapter.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Natsu is left with a large permanent scar from Vergil's attack, which he actually enjoys having. He even brags that his is bigger to Gray.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Lucy's response to Dante teasingly her where Loke went, and addressing him as such.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Mirajane admits to Natsu that she feels her refusal to bring him along on the mission where Lisanna died played a role in the tragedy, Vergil's words having got to her. Natsu assures her that he never blamed her or Elfman, and neither should she.
    • Dante considers Vergil attacking Fairy Tail to be his fault, outright saying that as his brother, it's his responsibility. The other members think otherwise.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Dante's reason for wanting to leave Fairy Tail, as his presence would not only ensure Vergil's return, but earn the attention of Mundus and other high ranking demons. Thankfully, Fairy Tail convince him to stay.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Makarov's comment about how monks can train their entire lives to perform Unison Raid is taken from the Armored Heart episode of the anime.
    • Amongst the members of Fairy Tail intercepting Dante before he leaves, Happy flying into his chest while crying is taken from My Resolve.
    • Makarov's speech to Dante is based off the same one he made to Kageyama in the Lullaby Arc.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Vergil's declaration that he shall return inspires unsettles even composed warriors like Erza and Lady.
    • Makarov's speech about the nature of bonds and the importance of being surrounded by people you care about is enough to leave the perpetually snarky and flippant Dante speechless.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Lampshaded by Gray regarding Dante and Natsu's attacks demolishing the castle they were in.
  • The Power of Friendship: Discussed and Invoked by Fairy Tail as a reason for why Dante should stay with them.
  • Shout-Out: The chapter (and arc) ending with a rematch between Natsu and Dante is reminiscent of the end of Rocky III.
  • Tears of Joy: Dante's reaction upon realising how dedicated Fairy Tail are to ensuring he has a place he can call home. He tries to deny it, with Elfman and Erza telling him It's Okay to Cry.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The members of Fairy Tail who searched for Vergil amidst the ruins were unable to find any trace of him.
  • We Will Meet Again: Vergil makes this vow to the rest of Fairy Tail before departing, unsettling many of them.
