Tropes

  • Blasphemous Boast: Leland being, well, Leland, manages to combine this with an outright death threat towards Kristen and her entire family in his gloating in the aftermath of the Orson trial.
Leland: I'm gonna do for you what God did for Job. Job had only three daughters. God killed them. You have four daughters. I'm gonna kill every last one, then your husband, and then burn down your house.
  • Blatant Lies: Andy's attempts to convince Kristen that he didn't teach their daughters a Buddhist meditation chant to say while waiting for Laura to get out of surgery.
Andy, clearly attempting to make an excuse up on the spot: ...Oh, how do they learn anything? The Internet.
  • Bugs Herald Evil: After Sonia shoots Lando and calls the police, walking back upstairs to await their arrival, a cockroach crawls out of the crack in the wall she'd been staring at frequently throughout the episode, seeming to hear whispers through.
  • Call-Back: Kristen's tearful question to David in the second episode about why only some people get miracles while talking about her daughter Laura's heart condition is apparently answered when Laura, having just undergone a surgery to observe her failing heart valve, emerges from it completely healed. The doctor even calls it "miraculous." Though given Andy's reveal that the mantra he'd been saying throughout the episode offered to exchange his life for her health, well...
  • Electromagnetic Ghosts: Leland's very presence behind Kristen when she turns her phone back on after court seems to make her phone suddenly begin to glitch out and stop working, much along the lines of the way he somehow caused only his side of a voice recording she took of a conversation of theirs to distort unrecognizably earlier in the season; implied to be a result of his demonic connections.
  • Evil Counterpart: The Baphomet-like demon to whom Leland pours his heart out is a gentle-voiced therapist equivalent to Kristen's Nice Guy analyst Dr. Boggs, down to even asking about Leland's dreams.
  • Honey Trap: Lando goes with Sonia to her apartment clearly thinking that he's going to score with a fan. It's only when she repeats one of his hateful old "cockroach" jokes that he starts to see what's really happening and tries to leave.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Sonia gives a tearful one after Lando apologizes to her for contributing to the genocide of her people, before shooting him in the head.
Sonia: Thank you. I forgive you. Your soul is clean.
  • Retired Monster: Sonia abducts Lando because she recognizes him as one of the "hate radio" deejays whose words were used to justify Hutus killing Tutsis en masse in the Rwanda genocide.
  • The Reveal: Leland Townsend is actually a false identity taken on by a man named Jake Perry, an insurance adjuster from Des Moines whose real past is far less impressive than he'd lead you to believe.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Poor David is left with one of these after witnessing Sonia murder Lando.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Kristen shuts down Leland when he yet again threatens to destroy her family, laying out every detail she's learned about his real history and proving that he now has very real reason to stop dismissing her as a threat. Also doubles as a very satisfying "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Leland doesn't take the humiliation Kristen dealt to him very well, and rants to his demon therapist about it.
