Forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard's examination of accused spree killer Orson LeRoux brings her into contact with David Acosta, a priest-in-training assessing cases for the Catholic Church; and contractor Ben Shakir, who looks at David's cases from a scientific and engineering perspective. As she begins to work with David, his nemesis Leland Townsend takes an interest in her.

Tropes

• And Your Little Dog, Too!: No sooner has Kristen met Leland when he starts threatening to kill her daughters.
• Fingore: George asks Kristen true/false questions and threatens to cut off a finger for every wrong answer. He actually does cut off one pinkie before she ascertains that she's dreaming.
• I Need a Freaking Drink: After his confrontation with Townsend David goes to a bar to steady himself with a shot.
• Insanity Defense: Orson LeRoux tries for this after claiming he is possessed by a demon.
• Only in It for the Money: Ben claims this, at least. When Kristen asks him if he believes in demons, he replies, "I believe it pays the rent."
• Pedophile Priest: Leland mocks David by asking him if he doesn't have any altar boys to rape.
• Slasher Smile: Orson's wife recalls this look on his face after he got up in the middle of the night.
• Talk to the Fist: Townsend's attempt to intimidate Kristen and David results in David punching him in the gut.
