Recap / Disenchantment S 5 E 5 Who Shot Elfo

Go To

When Elfo learns that the crystal ball can allow him to time travel, he decides to go back to the day he was murdered and hopefully prevent it from happening. Meanwhile, Luci hides Bad Bean's head and Dagmar tasks Satan with finding out where it is, while Zog and Bean have to deal with Freckles and the escaped freaks continue their journey back to Dreamland with Oona's help.

Tropes

  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Freckles mentions he spent his life sitting in the dummy store window being mocked by children, drunks, and drunken children... all three of which Bean notes were definitely her.
  • Epic Fail: The submarine the freaks intended to escape in sinks when Mora forgets to close the hatch before diving.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: At the end, Mop Girl — who up until this point has shown no indication she's anything other than human — speaks of humans as if she wasn't one. Then we get to the end of the episode.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Bad Bean's head is actually on the row of spikes outside Dreadland.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Even after Freckles led his two kids to Steamland where they were captured by P.T., Zog still trusts him.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Satan uses these on Luci. It fails.
  • I'll Kill You!: As the episode ends, Elfo pokes Mop Girl's ears. She tells him if he keeps doing that, she'll kill him.
  • It's All My Fault: Elfo believes everything bad in Dreamland at the moment can be traced back to him getting killed, and feels worthless because of it.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Oona and Ursula meet, and get along surpringly well, with Oona holding no ill will towards Ursula for being Zog's new Love Interest, and the two even talk about what they like about Zog.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: When Luci is seemingly hypnotised and forced to take Satan to the hiding place of Bad Bean's head, he takes Satan to the room where Stan keeps all the severed heads of the people he decapitated. Satan even lampshades how this is the perfect hiding spot for a severed head, since the place is filled with them. Subverted when it turns out Luci was only faking being hypnotized and was leading Satan in to a trap to take advantage of his professed dislike of severed heads; the head was never there. Played straight at the end of the episode when it's revealed that it was hidden in the one other place where there's a ton of severed heads, on the spikes surrounding the castle.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: The Crystal Ball can suddenly time travel, with no prior indication it could.
  • No-Sell: Luci shrugs off Satan's attempt to hypnotise him, but plays along at first to mess with Satan.
  • Not Me This Time: On seeing Freckles has a knife, Bean's first instinct is to scold Zog, who insists he has no idea where Freckles got it from.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Mop Girl always manages to catch up with Elfo when he tries to elude her after returning to Dreamland.
  • The Reveal:
    • Freckles makes explicit that Dagmar was in fact the mysterious woman who "sold" him to Bean and Zog. He also claims he's Bean's brother, but this is slightly suspect.
    • At least two years have passed in-universe since Elfo's death at the end of Season 1, with two winters being shown.
    • At the end of the episode, Elfo discovers Mop Girl has pointy ears like an elf.
  • Screw Destiny: Mop Girl eventually snaps Elfo out of his self-loathing by pointing out that there is no such thing as destiny and they can shape their own future. To embrace this new philosophy, Elfo shatters the crystal ball.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Elfo wants to go back in time to stop his own murder from happening, believing it will prevent Dagmar and Satan from ultimately taking over Dreamland in the present day. Instead, he causes a Stable Time Loop by accidentally shooting himself.
  • Stable Time Loop: It turns out Elfo is his own murderer; he mistakingly believes past-Pendergast is about to kill his past self and tries to shoot Pendergast first, but misses and ends up hitting his past self instead.
  • The Triple: Freckles says of puppets that they have "real dreams and real feelings... AND REAL KNIVES!"
  • Time Travel: Besides showing the past, Luci reveals the crystal ball can also take people into the past.
