Air date: July 8, 2005

"Gone Fishin' (Sort of)": In the first episode of the series, Scoutmaster Lumpus tries to catch a fish in Leaky Lake. Lazlo, Raj and Clam try to help him.

"Beans Are from Mars": The Squirrel Scouts believe the Jelly Beans are aliens.

"Gone Fishin' (Sort of)" contains examples of:

  • Brick Joke: The drain in the lake and the lake monster.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: When fog starts surrounding the lake, the Jellies are only visible by their eyes.
  • Cool Boat: Lumpus' fishing boat looks more like a spaceship than a boat.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Scoutmaster Lumpus calls the Bean Scouts "derelicts" who can't do anything for themselves while making Slinkman tie his lure for him, establishing him as a lazy grump who doesn't even want to be in charge of Camp Kidney.
    • The Jellies are first seen playing pretend with each other, establishing that they're playful kids.
      • Lazlo is the most gung-ho about helping a jerk like Lumpus, establishing his adventurous, kind personality and his inability to see the negative traits in others.
      • Raj is cautious and cynical about helping Lumpus, but he goes ahead with Lazlo and Clam anyway.
      • Clam's odd ways of speaking and how he holds the canoe without breaking a sweat establishes him as strange and strong.
    • The Squirrel Scouts drive up to Camp Kidney in a luxury fishing boat, all of the fish jumping into their boat. This firmly establishes how they frequently outperform the Bean Scouts in numerous ways.
    • We get to see Slinkman as a Yes-Man who is oft-ignored by Lumpus. His scene in bringing out Lumpus' speedboat also tells the audience he's a Hypercompetent Sidekick.
  • Fishing Episode: In this episode, Lumpus is determined to catch a fish despite the fact that nobody in Camp Kidney has been able to catch one. Lazlo, Raj, and Clam try to help by taking Lumpus' boat for a joyride and fishing in its spot when it runs out of fuel. When Lumpus catches up to them, he gets attacked by the legendary Leakey Lake monster, but still manages to catch a fish in the process.
  • Funny Background Event: Lazlo and Raj discuss if they should help Lumpus in the foreground while Lumpus gets beaten up by the lake monster in the background as Clam watches.
  • Hide and No Seek: Lumpus convinces the scouts by telling them "You can help me by NOT helping me." Of course, this results in Lumpus actually needing help...
  • Ominous Fog: When the Jellies are stranded on the lake, creepy fog appears.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: "There was a beep-beep, and then a boop, and then it just went kapoot!"
  • Stealth Pun: After the other kids refuse to join Lazlo in catching a fish, a clucking noise plays. They're too chicken.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Lumpus manages to catch a fish at the end.
  • What Does This Button Do?: Lazlo and Clam accidentally start Lumpus' speedboat just by pressing random buttons.

"Beans Are from Mars" contains examples of:

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: When the other kids hear the ice cream truck outside, they get distracted instantly.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Chip and Skip run into the wall (and then each other) when trying to leave the mess hall for ice cream, establishing them as a pair of Single Minded Ditzes.
    • The Squirrel Scout trio quickly establish themselves as a Beauty, Brains, and Brawn trio: Patsy stands around looking pretty, Nina reads a science fiction book called "Electroid Space Borgs", and Gretchen wolfs down her ice cream ravenously.
      • Patsy cries over Lazlo being an alien (and calls him "my Lazlo"), showing the audience she has a crush on him.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Gretchen thinks Bean Scouts are gross despite eating her ice cream like a pig and burping without even excusing herself.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That:
Nina: Take us to your leader... [Giggles] I have always wanted to say that.
  • Mars and Venus Gender Contrast:
Patsy: Ms. Mucus, why are boys so weird?
    Nina: Yeah!
    Gretchen: And gross, too?
Ms. Mucus: Because they're from Mars! [...] You girls can believe what you want, but I have yet to meet a man that I knew for a fact wasn't completely from another planet!
  • Poor Communication Kills: Ms. Mucus' Mars and Venus Gender Contrast philosophy ends up making the Squirrel Scouts think the Bean Scouts are actual aliens.
  • Static Electricity: The Jellies fool around with it, which lets the Squirrels further believe that they're aliens.
  • Sticky Situation: The Squirrel Scouts trick the Jellies into eating glue.
  • Worst Aid: Jelly Cabin's attempts to perform first aid on a doll has them tearing it apart.
