Recap / Bob's Burgers S3E11 "Nude Beach"

Go To

Hugo Habercore takes a leave of absence to become a patron of the local nude beach, but Bob's initial celebration is interrupted when he learns that Hugo's replacement, an overly-friendly wannabe rock star named Tommy Jaronda, is even worse. Meanwhile, the kids make a business out of letting people onto their secret overlook for spying on the nude beach.

Tropes:

  • Acrofatic: For a man who's pretty obese, Hugo is athletic enough to outperform not just Bob but everyone else in the "Nudecathlon". Bob performs pretty well too, considering he gets second place without being in decent shape himself.
  • Answer Cut: After Hugo reopens Bob's Burgers, Bob asks what happened to Tommy. Cut to Tommy about to perform at Jimmy Pesto's, while Jimmy dons a face of incoming dread.
  • The Bet: Bob is forced to challenge Hugo in a twenty-seven event naked Olympiad called the "Nudecathlon". If Bob wins, Hugo will go back to his old job and get Bob's restaurant opened again; if Hugo wins, Bob will have to cater the Nudecathlon after-party for free.
  • Darkest Hour: While the restaurant has faced trouble a lot throughout the series, actually getting shut down by Tommy is arguably the lowest point it's been at.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Bob tells Tommy that he doesn't like his music and won't let him play at the restaurant anymore. Tommy responds by throwing a bag of rat feces on the ground and shutting Bob down over it. And apparently, this is not the first time he's done this.
  • Dreadful Musician: Tommy is a god-awful singer and lyricist.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: No matter how much Hugo would relish in seeing Bob's Burgers shut down, he, unlike Tommy, wouldn't stoop to sabotage to make it happen (other than trying to be overly critical on the pettiest of reasons).
  • Harmful to Minors:
    • Tommy's songs are best described as an affront to the ears. The kids actually don't seem bothered by it, but given Gene is still humming "Elderly Prostitute" at least a day later it's safe to say it's left a negative impression.
    • Hugo lets his nudist friends disrobe in front of Bob's very young kids. Keep in mind he didn't know they were already spying on the nude beach.
  • Intercourse with You: Most of Tommy's music has these lyrics.
  • Karma Houdini: In the end Tommy receives no punishment for abusing his health inspector position and continues to work as one. However, this is one of the few times in fiction where it actually BENEFITS the main characters—the next restaurant he starts playing his music at is Jimmy Pesto's!
  • Lack of Empathy: When Tommy shuts down the restaurant for not letting him sing his music, Teddy and Mort still want to eat burgers, even after Bob tells them doing so will get him arrested.
Teddy: That's a risk we're willing to take!
  • Likes Older Women: Darryl uses his telescope to peep on his elderly neighbor.
Darryl: I've seen my neighbor across the street put her bra and girdle on hundreds of times.
Gene: Aren't girdles for old people?
Darryl: They are and she is.
  • Naked People Are Funny: There's a lot of awkward comedy milked out of the scenes at the nude beach, especially once Bob gets involved.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: Pretty much all of Tommy's songs are very family unfriendly. One of them involves him saying "sex" over and over. And of course, he plays them in front of the Belcher kids.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The scoreboard indicates that Bob actually briefly managed to overtake Hugo in the "Nudecathlon".
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: What ultimately brings Hugo back to his job. He's the one who is going to shut Bob down, not Tommy, and he wants it to happen fair and square, not through sabotage.
  • Overly Long Gag: "I'm good at sex, you're bad at sex, I'm good at sex, you're bad at sex, I'm good at sex..."
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Tommy seems like this, dismissing Hugo's nitpicks and befriending Bob. He turns out to be anything but.
  • Scenery Censor: All sorts of objects help cover up any naughty bits on the nude beach patrons.
  • Screaming at Squick: Louise and Gene react about as well as one would expect when they see their father stretching on the nude beach. Tina instead calmly notes that he's in better shape than she thought.
  • Shout-Out: The exterminator van is "Hit the Rodent Jack".
  • Tempting Fate: Bob notes that Tommy singing at the restaurant might not turn out so bad. The next scene proves him very wrong.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Tommy is revealed to be performing at Jimmy Pesto's, Jimmy can be seen with a look that just screams this trope (perhaps because he would've seen how Tommy's performances drove away Bob's customers).
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Hugo becomes much nicer as a nudist, even treating Bob courteously (well, more than before). It doesn't last.
  • Unexpected Virgin: It's revealed that Hugo and Linda never had sex during their relationship, and in fact never even saw each other naked. While it normally wouldn't be odd for someone as pathetic as Hugo to be a virgin, it is unusual considering he and Linda weren't just dating, they were engaged.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: Between the nitpicky, vindictive Hugo and the obnoxious, blackmailing Tommy, Bob decides Hugo is the lesser of two evils.
  • Worthy Opponent: Hugo compliments Bob as a worthy naked adversary.
