Recap / Bluey Tradies

Go To

The Heeler girls are playing in the front yard, when two cars pull up and two men exit them. The girls are suspicious and try to scare them away by barking at them like real dogs, but it doesn't work, so they run under the stairs in fear. Chilli talks to the guys, while the girls spy on them, surprised that they know Chilli's name and confused that they mentioned something will take three or four days.

One of the men starts spray-painting the ground. As Chilli heads back to the house, Bluey and Bingo call to her from under the stairs. They ask who the men are, and Chilli explains that they're tradies and they've come to build a fishpond. She then tells her daughters to keep an eye on the tradies and make sure they work hard.

So, the girls watch the tradies dig a hole, nicknaming them Big Belt and Chocolate Milk (the latter because he was drinking chocolate milk). When "Chocolate Milk" leaves to answer his phone, Bluey follows. Then, the girls tell Chilli, complaining that "Chocolate Milk" is on his phone all the time and thus not working hard, and branding both tradies their "enemies".

They run outside, and "Chocolate Milk" (whose real name turns out to be Chippy) is on his phone again. Bluey sneaks up behind him, hiding behind a kiddie car, while Bingo spies on "Big Belt". He then notices Bluey, scaring her, then both girls run screaming to Chilli.

They explain that Chippy (who they still call "Chocolate Milk") is texting a girl named Cherry. Then, they see Chippy out the window talking to an angry-looking woman. They wonder if this is Cherry, but also note that they look like "enemies" and the idea of phone-calling one's enemy puzzles them. Chilli surmises that they had an argument but Chippy is trying to say he's sorry.

The next day, the tradies come back, but Chippy is in "Big Belt's" car instead of his own, and there's no sign of Cherry. The girls spy on the tradies again, with Bluey drawing Bingo's observations. Bingo determines that "Big Belt" has a "missus" who won't let him eat pie, Chippy is no longer allowed to drive his car, and numerous other anecdotes. Then, everyone hears an ice cream truck, exciting both the girls and the tradies. The tradies buy ice creams, but Chilli doesn't allow the girls to have any.

When Chippy goes off to answer another phone call, the girls take his ice cream, and Bingo asks if "the missus" knows he's eating ice cream since she doesn't let him eat pie. "Big Belt" clarifies that "the missus" is his wife Jules, then asks the girls if they've been spying on him and Chippy. They affirm, and declare the tradies their enemies for "digging up [their] grass". They then ask if Chippy and Cherry are enemies, and "Big Belt" clarifies that they are now, but were once friends and are trying to rekindle their friendship.

Chilli appears and snaps at the girls for eating ice cream, revealing that "Big Belt's" real name is Sparky. When Sparky returns to work, he tells the Heeler girls that they'll have to go back to being enemies, but Bluey isn't sure.

The next day, the Heelers give Sparky a pie and the tradies finish building the pond. Despite not liking the tradies digging up the lawn, the girls find the pond "amazing". That evening, the tradies leave, the Heeler ladies thank Sparky for his services, and everyone observes that Chippy and Cherry have made up.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: The tradies wear uniforms with no shoes.
  • Big "NO!": Screamed by Bluey and Bingo upon being denied ice cream by Chilli.
  • The Cameo: This episode features Mick Molloy as Sparky.
  • Canine Confusion: Chippy drinks chocolate milk, which would sicken or even kill a real dog.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Chilli mentioned as an aside in "Stumpfest" that the reason stumps were being torn out of the yard was to put in a fish pond, and the tradies install that pond in this episode.
    • Sparky notices that the mailbox is crooked and readjusts it, a remnant of the events of "Onesies", the episode immediately preceding this one.
    • When Spark gives Bluey and Bingo Chippy's ice cream, the girls take turns sharing licks of the cone. It seems they learned their lesson back in Ice Cream.
  • Death Glare: Cherry gives Chippy the stink eye, causing the girls to think they're enemies.
  • Edible Theme Naming: The girl Chippy texts is named Cherry.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Chippy has his eyes hidden under his extremely curly hair.
  • Fat and Skinny: Sparky is quite round, while Chippy is lanky.
  • Furry Reminder: When Bluey and Bingo first meet Chippy and Sparky, the girls' first instinct is to acknowledge the latter two as "intruders" and start barking at them. When this doesn't scare the tradies off, the girls run for it.
  • Got Me Doing It: Chilli ends up calling Chippy "Chocolate Milk" because the girls did.
  • Implied Love Interest: While Chippy and Cherry are described as "friends" by Sparky, they seem to be a couple, since she drives him around and he has a tattoo of a pair of cherries on one arm (which he may have gotten because of her).
  • In-Series Nickname: Since Bluey and Bingo don't know the tradies' names at first, they nickname Sparky "Big Belt" and Chippy "Chocolate Milk".
  • Nice Guy: Sparky fully understands why the kids feel threatened by his intrusion into their yard and accepts their designation of him as an "enemy"- even though he acts nothing like one. This leads Bluey to realize that he's not their enemy at all.
  • Not So Above It All: Chili is not a gossipy person, but she very quickly becomes very invested in Chippy's relationship turmoil, even joining the girls in their spying and asking for updates on Cherry, and is genuinely happy to see the that two of them have made up by episode's end.
  • Running Gag: Chippy being on his phone and/or trying to make up with Cherry over the phone, despite being on the job.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • The girls say about the pond, "It's amazing!" in unison.
    • The Heeler Sisters, Chippy, and Sparky scream, "Ice cream!" in unison upon hearing the ice cream truck.
    • Bluey and Bingo scream, "NOOOOOOO!!!", in unison upon being denied ice cream by Chili.
  • Split Screen: The girls and the tradies are shown on a split screen getting excited about ice cream.
  • Sweet Tooth: In addition to the Heeler girls' previously established love for sweets, the tradies seem to have sweet teeth as well — Chippy drinks chocolate milk and both of them get excited for ice cream.
