Recap / Bluey – "Ice Cream"

Go To

Bandit, Stripe, and their daughters (except Socks) are in a gift shop. The fathers don't let the girls buy toys, but Muffin gets a toy dinosaur stuck to her ear.

When they leave the store, they come across an ice cream cart. The girls all want ice cream, but Bandit doesn't let his daughters have any because they had ice cream yesterday, and he feels it's too much sugar. However, Stripes lets Muffin have ice cream, claiming it's to make up for the dinosaur on her ear.

Muffin doesn't let her cousins have any of her ice cream, so Bandit buys them and himself some after all. However, when the girls decide to give each other a lick of their ice creams, they argue over whether Bluey's tongue was "out too far", and who should lick first. When they try to both lick at once, they can't reach and spin in a circle until the ice creams melt.

The girls are sad, and they ask him for more ice cream, but he refuses. After a while, however, he gives his daughters his ice cream. Then, they decide to share it between the three of them.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Arc Words: The word "fair" is used often by Bandit to justify why he won't bend over backwards for just anything.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Bluey and Bingo's ice cream end up melting, but luckily for them Bandit decides to them his ice cream, which they share together.
  • Ear Ache: Muffin plays around with a toy dinosaur that has an opening/closing jaw. The toy's jaw ends up clamped around her ear, with the following scene showing a band-aid over the injury.
  • Freudian Slip: Bluey is so engrossed in deciding what flavor of ice cream she wants that she accidentally calls Uncle Stripe "Uncle Strawberry". Comically enough, she's too absent-minded to care that she called him that.
  • Furry Confusion: Some of the characters in the episode eat chocolate ice cream, when chocolate is poisonous for dogs to consume.
  • Furry Reminder: When Bluey tries to ask Muffin for even a tiny lick of the latter's ice cream, Muffin's reaction is to actually growl at her cousin like a dog. Later, after hers and Bluey's ice creams melt, Bingo gives out a disheartened howl.
  • Howl of Sorrow: Bingo howls when her ice cream melts.
  • Lost Food Grievance: When the ice creams melt, Bluey and Bingo are very sad.
  • Meaningful Echo: When Bluey voices that it's practically Bandit's job to give his ice cream to his daughters on the principle of being their father, he concedes that it's "fair". As opposed to all the times he used the word "fair" to justify why he won't balk to his daughters' wishes, this is meant to exude the self-sacrificing nature of parenthood and how it has its own rewards.
