Recap / Bluey Dunny

Go To

The Heelers are playing a guessing game in Bandit and Chilli's bed, but Bingo gets it wrong and thinks potatoes are called "botatoes". Then, she has to use the bathroom, but Bandit goes there instead. Bingo asks if they can play "Three in the Bed" while Bandit is in the "dunny", but Chilli asks the girls to say, "toilet" instead of "dunny".

The girls ask if it's a rude word, and Chilli says no; she just prefers the term "toilet". Bingo asks if the Queen would say, "dunny", and Chilli says no, so Bingo decides not to say it either. Bluey says that Chloe's parents let her say, "dunny", but Chilli says that families have different rules. Then, Bandit exits and says, "Dunny's free," so the girls say, "Dad said it!". This confuses Bandit, so Chilli explains that she's banned the girls from saying the word "dunny".

While Bingo is in the bathroom, Bluey asks if she can say, "dun-eep" instead of "dunny". Chilli says yes, but using gibberish would mean no one understands. Bluey says that Bandit would understand, and she speaks gibberish, to which he pretends to understand.

Bluey asks if she would get in trouble for saying, "dunny", and her parents claim she'd get "squish-squashed". She says, "Dunny!" to find out what that means, and Bandit rolls on her and says, "Squish-squash!". Bluey asks what would happen if Chilli said it, but she says she never would.

Bingo enters and moves Chilli's lips to make her "say" sentences with "dunny" in them, and then Chilli agrees to give the girls chocolate if she ever says, "dunny". The girls try to trick her into saying it by using "Oh man, I need the dunny!" as the phrase in a game of Pass it On, but Chilli plays dumb and pretends she didn't hear properly. Bluey says that she wishes she could say, "dunny" because it rhymes with "funny", but Chilli says that the family needs to say "nice words" to keep their reputation.

After a game of Four in the Bed, Bluey asks if the Heelers are a better family than the Dalmatians, since Chloe is allowed to say, "dunny" despite it allegedly not being a "nice" word. Then, Bingo asks if she's still allowed to think the word "dunny", so Chilli gives up and decides to let the girls say it after all. Then, she says it isn't a "naughty" word, to which Bluey reveals that Chloe isn't allowed to say, "naughty".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bottle Episode: Exaggerated; not only does the episode entirely take place in one room, but entirely in Bandit and Chilli's bed and the space immediately around it.
  • Calling Your Bathroom Breaks:
    • At the beginning, Bingo says, "I need to use the toilet".
    • Later, she picks "Oh man, I need the dunny!" as the Pass it On phrase.
  • The Compliance Game: Chilli tells her daughters to use the word "toilet" instead of "dunny" (which is an Australian slang word), as "dunny" is "not the word the Queen would use". When she claims she would give the girls chocolate if she said it, they try to trick her into saying it by roping her into a game of Pass It On and using "Oh man, I need the dunny!" as the phrase. Chilli, however pretends she couldn't hear it properly.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Bandit punishes Bluey for using the word "dunny" by rolling on her and saying, "Squish-squash!", which the parents refer to as "squish-squashing".
  • Hitler Ate Sugar: Inverted.
Bingo: Would the Queen say dunny?
Chilli: Um, no. It is not a word the Queen would use.
Bingo: Then I'm not saying it either.
  • Inherently Funny Words: Bluey wishes she could say, "dunny" because it rhymes with "funny".
  • Malaproper: Discussed. When the Heelers try to guess a vegetable, Bingo mistakes a potato for a "botato".
  • Nursery Rhymes: The Heelers sing the popular song "Ten in the Bed" in one scene. note
  • Potty Emergency: Bingo has a minor one in the beginning of the episode (she needs to go to the bathroom, but says she isn't "busting") that triggers the plot.
  • Suddenly Fluent in Gibberish: Bandit fakes understanding Bluey's gibberish so the latter can get her point across to Chilli.
  • Toilet Humour: The plot hinges around a slang word for toilets.
