Ben and Gwen continue to disagree about how to handle Ultimate Kevin, which results in the former wanting to stop Kevin while the latter wants to find someone who will help her cure Kevin.

Tropes in this episode

  • Brutal Honesty: Max tells Gwen that he agrees with Ben and that she needs to either focus on stopping a dangerous threat to others or just stay out of Ben's way.
  • Cliffhanger: Gwen gets captured by Ultimate Kevin, who begins to absorb her powers, while losing more and more of his sanity.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • After being rescued by Ben from Ultimate Kevin, Alan makes note that among the other Plumbers' Kids he's brutalized, Kevin also apparently stole energy from Dr. Viktor, the Frankenstein-like alien that helped resurrect Zs'Skayr in Season 3 of the original series.
    • Gwen and Ultimate Kevin fight in an arcade. When did the two first met when they were kids? In an arcade. And, funnily enough, it's the exact same one.
  • Deal with the Devil: Gwen promises Darkstar enough mana if he'll help her to restore Kevin to normal.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: At the end of the episode, Kevin tries to stop himself from trying to steal Gwen's energy, because he still cares about her to some extent. But in the end, he can't control himself and lets his instincts cloud his judgement, resulting in Kevin forcing himself onto Gwen for his own gratification, all as she screams in agony. It disturbingly plays out like a rape scene.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Discussed between Max and Ben. When Ben informs his grandfather that he intends to show Kevin absolutely no mercy when he sets out to kill him, Max notes that if he were in Ben's place, he'd absolutely agree with his thought process, and would have no problem with putting him down himself...but is very much uncomfortable with Ben himself taking that position because he usually strives to be an All-Loving Hero and save everyone instead of thinking about The Needs of the Many.
  • Enemy Mine: As Gwen is assembling a team in order to deal with Kevin, she's forced to bring Darkstar to her side.
  • Feud Episode: Ben and Gwen's arguments hit its lowest point that the two are willing to fight each other. What's worse is that Gwen doesn't try to hurt Ben while the latter isn't holding back.
  • Good Versus Good: Gwen and Ben's arguing about how to deal with Kevin reaches a boiling point, as they end up fighting each other. Ben wins.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: While not their greatest threat, Darkstar still had the wealth, power and resources with which he could challenge the trio. When reintroduced here, he's seen wandering the streets in rags and feeding off the energy of stray dogs. Humungousaur later subjects Vulkanus to a nasty thrashing.
  • Jerkass Realization: The situation has made Ben take stock of his ego issues lately and how he hasn't taken things as seriously as he should've.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Ben uses Lodestar to interrogate the Forever Knights.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Max considers Ben's willingness to kill Kevin to be out-of-character for him. However, under such circumstances, he completely understands him and admits that he would have done it himself. He only calls Ben to talk about his resolve because he wants to make sure that he truly believes its the right thing to do.
  • Pet the Dog: As it turns out, despite Kevin having being a rampaging monster for the past 3 episodes, he still cared about Gwen enough to avoid trying to hurt her or stealing her energy. Unfortunately, that little bit of self control finally ebbs here, and he sics himself on his former girlfriend to gleefully drain her of what she has.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Ben uses Way Big on Gwen.
Ben: You know why you lost? Because you care about not hurting me and that's exactly why you can't do what it takes to deal with Kevin.
  • Save the Villain: Gwen tries to prevent Ben from attacking Vulkanus.
  • Transformation Name Announcement: While Way Big doesn't say his name, Gwen says "Way Big" after Ben transforms into the giant.
  • The Voiceless: Way Big doesn't speak.
