The Tennysons reunite with with a long-lost family member.
While Gwen's coping with the death of Grandpa Max, the team meets a mysterious woman, who's revealed to be Ben and Gwen's grandmother.
  • Alien Arts Are Appreciated: While waiting on Gwen’s decision, Verona dances to Shag Carpeting, even complimenting human music.
  • Amicable Exes: After Frank and Carl grew up and moved out, Max and Verdona split up. She wanted to go back home to reconnect with her heritage and knew he was busy with the Plumbers. She was only on Earth because she heard of his passing and wanted to pay her respects.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: During their fight, when Ben makes a joke about Verdona "minding her mana" she actually laughs.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: "Just who do you think you are littering my grandpa's cove with your flowers?"
  • Big Brother Instinct: Little Cousin Instinct coming from Ben to protect Gwen again, to be precise. Verdona even praises him on that when she expresses how proud she is of them both.
  • Brutal Honesty: Gwen is conflicted over whether to go or stay with Grandma Verdona. Everyone else has been acting as though they don't (entirely) mind Gwen going away. When she gets to Kevin, he doesn't sugarcoat that he doesn't like the idea of Gwen leaving and thinks it's lame. This earns him a kiss on the cheek from her.
  • Continuity Nod: Gwen's Lucky Girl mask shows up in her drawer of magic items, photos of Gwen and Ben in their Original Series outfits show up, and Verdona reference Max's love of Shag Carpeting.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Word of God is that Verdona was more than capable of beating Ben, Kevin and Gwen, but held back to toy with them.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Gwen's mother often speaks in a tired deadpan.
  • Didn't See That Coming: "I think we just met our grandmother."
  • Doing In the Wizard: Downplayed. Gwen's powers are stated to derive from her Anodite heritage and her father Frank claims that there's no such thing as magic. However both past and future episodes establish magic does exist and even at the time it was clear Frank had no idea what he was talking about.
  • Due to the Dead: Verdona leaves a flower (that she made out of energy) by the tree with her and Max's names carved in it.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Gwen realizes who Verdona is when Kevin points out she made the flowers out of energy.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Kevin states that he does not want to "pound your grandma" (despite her being in Anodite form).
  • Foreshadowing: While mourning for Grandpa Max, Gwen soberly tells an anecdote of a fishing trip they went on together. When she caught a tiny fish, her grandfather convinced her to let it go so it could grow bigger, which Gwen admits was difficult. This mirrors Grandma Verdona's arc throughout the episode, as she must learn to let Gwen stay behind so she can live her life on Earth.
  • The Gadfly: During a stakeout, a bored Ben fiddles with the passenger door's lock. Upon seeing that that irritates Kevin, he proceeds to keep doing it.
  • Gut Feeling: Frank didn't inherit "the spark" like Gwen did, but he can immediately tell whenever Verdona is lurking about.
  • I Choose to Stay: Gwen's ultimate choice. As tempting as it is to develop her powers on her grandmother's home planet, she would rather practice them on Earth where she can be close to her friends and family.
  • Light-Hearted Rematch: The episode opens with former enemies Ben (as Brainstorm) and Kevin sparring.
  • Mundane Utility: Verdona uses her near infinite magic powers honed over six or seven decades to generate a disco ball and play music.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Natalie really doesn't care for Verdona, even before Verdona attempts to abduct Gwen. According to Natalie, Frank has a habit of complaining about one of her aunts, but after this visit from Verdona, she doesn't want to hear that ever again.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ben and Kevin when Gwen reveals that she knows they're sitting outside her window eavesdropping.
  • Parental Favoritism: Upon learning that Gwen inherited her Anodite powers, Verdona instantly takes a shine to her, mostly ignoring Ben outside of laughing at a few of his jokes. It's also implied that while she was disappointed he didn't have "the spark", Verdona preferred Gwen's father Frank over her uncle Carl, since he was always aware of when she was watching him.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Gwen eventually realises that Verdona is trying to reconnect with her primarily because she misses Max.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: According to Frank, Max kept being a Plumber from Verdona, but she always knew about it and how he didn't want her to worry.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: After Ben and Kevin are caught listening in on Gwen and Frank's conversation, the latter presumes that Kevin and Gwen are an item. They both immediately deny it in horror while Ben awkwardly looks to the side.
  • Supernatural-Proof Father: As shown here, both Gwen and Ben's fathers never gained the Anodite genes from Verdona, causing her to leave Earth after they moved out. Frank however is more than aware of his mother's abilities, and has become acute enough to recognize when she's secretly watching him well into his adult years.
  • Wham Line: When Gwen shows her powers, her father acknowledges that he knew her powers were bound to manifest someday. Gwen is excited that she was right, magic does run in their family. But her father corrects her that on the contrary, the reason she has powers is because her grandmother is an alien.
