Finn awakens from a coma to find he's got two broken legs, Jake has gone bonkers and everyone else in the Candy Kingdom has mysteriously vanished.

Tropes

  • Abandoned Hospital: Finn wakes up in one after his legs were broken. It's in the Candy Kingdom, though, so it's not as creepy as it otherwise would be.
  • All Webbed Up: The candy people are found like this in the sewer, from the Deer's gluey saliva.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: The candy people after they flushed the Freak Deer (who had them trapped for an extended period of time) down a sewer pipe.
  • Asleep for Days: We technically don't know how long it wasnote , but this is implied.
  • Ax-Crazy: Jake after some major Sanity Slippage goes insane.
  • Balloonacy: The insane Jake uses a bunch of balloons to lift him off the ground, and cinderblocks to hold him down. At the end, the balloons are used to lift everyone out of the sewer.
  • Beat the Curse Out of Him: Finn restores Jake to sanity by punching him in the face repeatedly, with the one that really does it was when Finn punched Jake's injured head.
  • Bowdlerise: Airings outside of the U.S. and Canada censor out the freed candy people pushing the unconscious deer into the flushing sewer whirlpool.
  • Consulting Mr Puppet: Jake does this with glove puppets of his friends while insane.
  • Darker and Edgier: The episode starts off with Finn being crippled and the Candy Kingdom all kidnapped, it only gets darker from there.
  • The Determinator: Finn manages to get into the sewers and fight both Jake and the Deer, despite his legs not having fully healed.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Jake is rather giddy despite being bonkers.
  • Doing In the Wizard: We're led to believe that Jake is under a curse or possessed, but his actions turn out to be the result of mundane brain damage.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Finn briefly believes it was a delusional Jake who trapped all the candy people. Jake believes it too after he comes to his senses, but then Peppermint Butler reveals everyone was trapped by the Freak Deer who was attacking the candy people earlier in the episode.
  • "Everyone Is Gone" Episode: After Finn wakes up in the hospital, he wakes up to find the Candy Kingdom empty of all inhabitants except Jake. It turns out the Freak Deer dragged the candy people into the sewers to eat them.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: When Jake drops the cinder blocks on the Freak Deer's head, you can see his skull get crushed and his neck broken.
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: The moment when the Freak Deer breaks both Finn's legs is shockingly brutal by the show's usual standards, all the more for how out-of-nowhere it is.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Since everyone's disappeared for "six months", Jake thinks that everyone is holding a surprise party.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Downplayed when Finn gets his legs broken by the deer, and his only reaction is to moan "Whatever" in a pained voice. Played straight later on, when Finn cheerfully admits his legs are still broken after fighting the Freak Deer.
  • Sanity Slippage: During the kidnapping incident, Jake takes a blow to the head and slowly goes insane.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The opening with Finn waking up in the deserted hospital is a reference to 28 Days Later.
    • The picture of Finn and Jake in Jake's tent is in the style of Keith Haring.
  • Wham Line: When Finn complains about waiting all day for Jake's surprise party, Jake retorts "Well, I've been waiting six months!"
  • The Worm That Walks: Some of the creepier moments in the episode hint that Jake may have been infested and possessed by a swarm of insects, although it turns out to be just poor hygiene.
