Recap / Aaahh!!! Real Monsters S4E08: Super Ickis / The Substitute

Go To

The eighth episode of the fourth season of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.

Gromble's Opening Line: "This'll scare ya silly!"

Super Ickis: After getting in trouble for trying to read his Ultra-Monster comics in class, Ickis puts together his own costume and pretends to be his hero. But after an accident launches him into the air and he accidentally saves a group of students, rumors spread that there's a real Ultra-Monster on campus. After learning the truth, Krumm becomes his sidekick, 'Stink Boy', and the two go on increasingly reckless misadventures.

The Substitute: An unfamiliar monster arrives at the Academy. This stranger informs the students that The Gromble has left to tend to his ailing mother, and introduces himself as their substitute teacher, Skritch. Unlike their strict Headmaster, Skritch quickly proves to be much more laidback, encouraging them to spend all day playing and goofing around! The only student who isn't okay with this is Oblina, who's convinced there's something shady about their sub...

Super Ickis contains examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: Ickis was literally launched into superheroism, sending him flying into the right place at the right time.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Ickis and Krumm get in over their heads at the water park, the real Ultra-Monster shows up to save them.
  • Book and Switch: Ickis hides an issue of Ultra-Monster inside his Monster Manual so he can read it during class.
  • Full-Body Disguise: Ultra-Monster, aka The Gromble.
  • Magic Feather: Ickis scrounged together his costume himself, but becomes convinced it makes him more powerful. As a side-effect of this belief, he grows increasingly reckless. When the real Ultra-Monster shows up, he tells them that they don't need costumes to be scary.

The Substitute contains examples of:

  • Alone with the Psycho: After Oblina tries — and fails — to rally the others after Ickis and Krumm disappear, the rest of the students leave the classroom to go play. Skritch then points out how it's just the two of them, and they really should have a little chat...
  • Bad with the Bone: Skritch isn't above using the teacher's bone as a weapon.
  • Bound and Gagged: The Gromble, Ickis and Krumm all find themselves tied up in The Gromble's bathtub.
  • Carry a Big Stick: When Oblina makes it back to the academy, she brings a stick with her so she's armed for her rematch with Skritch.
  • Cassandra Truth: Oblina struggles to convince her fellow students that something's wrong with Skritch.
  • Cool Teacher: Skritch seems like one to most of the students at first; he doesn't assign any homework, lets them play slime ball and goof off all day, everyday! Only Oblina doesn't like him.
  • He Knows Too Much: Skritch kidnaps Ickis and Krumm because he thinks they know too much about his Evil Plan. When he ungags them, Krumm admits he has no idea what's going on, and Ickis demands answers.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Skritch is Genre Blind enough to think that Oblina died after getting swept away in the sewer, and tells The Gromble and her friends as much.
  • The Resenter: Skritch believes that he's a much better teacher than The Gromble and should have been made one instead of him.
  • Room Full of Crazy: Skritch surrounds himself with photos and articles about his rival.
  • Sequel Hook: When The Gromble asks Skritch if he's finally learned the importance of hard work, Skritch happily agrees, claiming he's finally found a goal worth working for. However, he doesn't tell him what it is: getting Revenge on them.
  • Teacher's Pet:
    • Oblina's usual status as one doesn't help her case when she's trying to convince everyone that something's wrong. Ickis specifically tells her she's just jealous that she's not the favored student anymore.
    • Skritch describes The Gromble as one, and makes it sound like he was unfairly favored by their teachers.
  • Traitor Shot: Just in case it wasn't obvious enough something's up with Skritch, he keeps getting close-ups where he smiles evilly.
  • Unreliable Voiceover: When Skritch rants about how all his accomplishments were overlooked in favor of The Gromble, the accompanying Flashbacks show how they really weren't on the same level.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Oblina arrives and takes on Skritch in The Gromble's quarters, he starts seriously losing his cool. What really gets to him, though, is when he realizes other students are watching the fight, and orders them to help him... and they assist their teacher and classmates instead.
