You Never Dreamed (Вам и не снилось…) is a 1980 Soviet romance film directed by Ilya Frez, based on the story by Galina Shcherbakova. It is about Star-Crossed Lovers Roma Lavochkin (Nikita Mikhailovsky) and Katya Shevchenko (Tatiana Aksyuta), who meet in Moscow. They fall in love, but their parents try to keep them apart because of the bad blood between the two families. However, Roma and Katya manage to see each other, and in the end they are together.
Tropes:
- The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: The teacher tries to help Roma and Katya despite having her own relationship problems.
- Market-Based Title: Initially premiered in the USA as Love and Lies.
- Spared by the Adaptation : Doubly so. In the book the film is based on, Roma dies, and of course this is ultimately based on Romeo and Juliet.
