Mortal Kombat XL Character Banter is an updated version of Mortal Kombat X Character Banter by Snafu the Great. The premise is a simple one: what if various characters from video games and comics underwent the character intros seen in Mortal Kombat XL?
The Fanfic has the following tropes:
- An Offer You Can't Refuse: Jade/Delia gives one to Regime Superman: eliminate Dark Raiden and his forces, and she will bring Lois back from the dead.
- Bad Boss: Many of Dark Raiden's intros with his henchmen seem to indicate that they're displeased with the way he treats them.
- Downer Ending: Dark Raiden and his Legion of Doom were able to wipe out Kotal Kahn's La Résistance, thus absorbing Outworld into Earthrealm…only for an empowered Onaga to emerge, revive the fallen warriors and attack Raiden, ultimately destroying him and leading to The End of the World as We Know It.
- Big Damn Heroes: Dante saves Team S-F and Jax from being assassinated by Erron Black in his ending.
- Bittersweet Ending: Maya's ending. She, along with Tusk and Mira, avenged the Night Guard, but Mira - now a vampire - leaves, the sisters now enemies.
- Deadpan Snarker: Aplenty.
- For Want Of A Nail: What drives the story.
- Future Me Scares Me: Raiden seems to be horrified as to what his corrupted future self might do.
- Happily Married: Ryu to Chun-Li, as he points this out in one of his intros against Johnny Cage.
- Hate Sink: Dark Raiden, courtesy of his villainous actions. The fact that even Regime Superman, Robin and Wonder Woman find him to be despicable really speaks for itself.
- Jerkass: As if being a rude, sociopathic and self-centered asshole of a god wasn't enough, Dark Raiden seems to speak in a snobbish and condescending manner to his opponent.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Batman sees that Kitana and Sonya have taken the She Who Fights Monsters path to avenging their enemies and compares them to Wonder Woman, who had followed a similar path after Metropolis was nuked.
- Papa Wolf: Even as a revenant, Jax seems to care for Vera and Jacqui Briggs. Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Scorpion and Kenshi share the same sentiments.
- Pay Evil unto Evil: Regime Superman's handling of Dark Raiden and his forces:
- Sends Black Adam to destroy Seido (as payback for Hotaru destroying Li Mei's village)
- Has Regime Wonder Woman torture and emasculated Kano (for kidnapping and torturing Cassie Cage and his son, and kidnapping and raping Kabal's widow)
- Triborg, the robotic ninja, goes berserk and destroys the Red Dragon after being reprogrammed by Regime Cyborg.
- Has Regime Aquaman kill Goro (because he destroyed the Shokan).
- Regime Raven causes Shao Kahn to go berserk, killing Mileena, Shang Tsung, Havik and Reiko (before being put down by Dark Raiden).
- Killer Frost freezes the Black Dragon (including Tasia, Jarek and Tremor) to death for aiding Dark Raiden in his atrocities and their crimes in general.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
- Ryu, as Quan Chi had murdered Gouken.
- Dante, as Nero was injured whilst protecting Kyrie from Erron Black.
- Maya, as Kano and the Black Dragon invaded and destroyed the Night Guard on Quan Chi's orders.
- Sadist: Unlike his normal counterpart, Dark Raiden seems to relish in the suffering of his opponents without a shred of concern or remorse, giving a particularly unnerving Slasher Smile in his win pose.
- Shout-Out:
- Dante calling Leatherface's chainsaw "the great communicator."
- Deadpool reading either the script for Mortal Kombat: Desperation or Mortal Kombat vs Marvel Universe in his intro.
- Ryu and Johnny Cage parodying Cassie and Jacqui's intro.
- Shadow Archetype: Fujin often fears if he'll end up being no different from Dark Raiden.
- Utopia Justifies the Means: Gill's goal is to unify the realms under his banner.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Gill.
