Tropes in Lan Sizhui Sees Dead People:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Whereas Lan Sizhui and Wei Wuxian adored each other as child and brother figure, their relationship was distant due to Wei Wuxian dying at a young age and resurrecting when Lan Sizhui was nearly grown. Here, their relationship is of parent and child as Wei Wuxian managed to "survive" as a ghost and stayed to raise him.
  • Appeal to Tradition: Wei Wuxian gets his son Sizhui to shave off Lan Qiren's beard by claiming is a family tradition to do so. Cangse Sanren must be very, very proud of her descendants.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Lan Wangji quickly runs out of available babysitters due to Lan Yuan's tendency of emotionally traumatizing him by telling them all about the dead relatives haunting them. Lan Xichen is still uncomfortable being alone with Lan Sizhui.
  • Bastard Angst: Lan Yuan was not accepted by the Lan sect at first for his supposed illegitimacy. His father did his best to protect Lan Yuan from the social ostracization associated with this. This disappeared as Lan Yuan grew older as he was the only possible heir and a prodigy at that.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Played for Laughs Lan Sizhui is adored by the Lan Sect, especially by his grand-uncle Lan Qiren, for being the embodiment of Lan ideals. Lan Sizhui however is just as mischievous as his adoptive "mother", frequently pulling pranks with nobody suspecting that it's him.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Wei Wuxian avoids the Parental Abandonment he suffered as a child by staying behind as a ghost to help raise Lan Yuan. Lan Wangji, in spite of his mother's death and father's neglect, makes sure to maintain an active role in Lan Yuan's upbringing and to be open in his affection for him.
  • Child Prodigy: Thanks to Wei Wuxian's influence, Lan Yuan becomes an extremely talented artist.
  • Creepy Child: All over the place in these stories. Thanks to having the sixth sense, it comes with the territory. Despite that though Lan Yuan is a sweet boy but he can be very unsettling. Not helped by his casual references to people's various dead relatives. Even Wei Wuxian found him creepy when they initially reunite.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: When Wei Wuxian first properly appears to Lan Yuan, Lan Yuan compares him to a pale, unearthly beautiful fairy.
  • Death Amnesia: When Wei Wuxian is resurrected, his memories as a ghost and raising Lan Sizhui is wiped clean much to his son's frustration. Thankfully, the bout of amnesia doesn't last for long.
  • Doting Parent Lan Wangji adores his son Lan Yuan and tries to spoil him when he can. He is very hostile to those who would take his child away.
    • Wei Wuxian is also an enabler for Lan Sizhui's mischief.
  • Face Your Fears: Lan Jingyi learned to be less afraid of ghosts thanks to Lan Sizhui informing him that the ghosts of Cloud Recesses are mostly benign.
  • Green Around the Gills: In Lan Sizhui's First Visit to Koi Tower, it's Played for Laughs where we learn from Jiang Cheng that Lan Sizhui gets seasick from riding to Koi Tower. More on that, Lan Sizhui apparently vomited on him twice and lived to tell the tale.
  • Helicopter Parents: Lan Wangji tends to smother his young son and be very protective of him. Which is justified since the Lan elders attempt to take custody of Lan Yuan away from him or send away his "bastard."
  • High Turnover Rate: Lan Wangji quickly runs out of babysitters willing to watch Lan Yuan due to the latter creeping out his uncles with his sixth sense.
  • I See Dead People: Lan Sizhui grows up being able to see ghosts without any assistance.
  • I Thought Everyone Could Do That: Lan Yuan doesn't understand why people go to the effort of using musical cultivation to speak to ghosts when he just to talk to them.
  • Momma's Boy: Lan Yuan adores his "Mother" to the point of trying to emulate him. Through pranks. It doesn't help that Wei Wuxian actively encourages this behavior and frankly finds it rather amusing.
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: Lan Wangji initially believed Lan Yuan had an imaginary friend when he spent time with the ghostly Wei Wuxian.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: The ghostly Wei Wuxian is a different caliber from all the other ghosts of his setting. He is powerful and benign enough to surpass the spiritual protections of Cloud Recesses. Despite his soul being shattered, he was able to become in a ghost in a weakened state from strength alone. Not to mention he is proactive in raising Lan Yuan despite being dead.

  • Papa Wolf: Wei Wuxian clawed his way out of the afterlife in order to protect Lan Yuan from malicious spirits at the Burial Mounds and later to watch over him as he grew up.
  • Parents Know Their Children: Inverted. Lan Sizhui immediately recognized "Mo Xuanyu" as his other parent Wei Wuxian despite the latter being in a different body. Which is justified due Lan Sizhui being informed that Mo Xuanyu would give up his body to Wei Wuxian.
  • Raised by the Supernatural: Lan Sizhui is raised by his living adoptive father Lan Wangji and the spirit of his dead adoptive "mother", Wei Wuxian.
  • Restrained Revenge: Lan Yuan gleefully terrifies Jiang Wanyin, Lan Xichen, Jin Guangyao, the Lan Elders and Lan Qiren by ghoulishly describing their dead relatives. Since they are responsible for the death of his first Parental Substitute and his original family and the social ostracization of his adoptive father, its pretty restrained.
  • Resurrected Romance: Lan Wangji is ecstatic to find out that the love of his life has been helping him raise Lan Yuan from beyond the grave.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Lan Yuan shares his adoptive parent Wei Wuxian's playful nature and sense of humor.
  • Spirit Advisor: Lan Yuan cheerfully tells his babysitter Jiang Cheng that the deceased Jiang Yanli is telling him that Jiang Cheng is making the pork rib and lotus root soup wrong. Jiang Cheng is justifiably unsettled by this.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Despite loving each other and reuniting with Wei Wuxian's ghost, Lan Wangji still can't interact or speak with him directly without their spirit medium son.
  • Troll: Lan Sizhui takes a lot of glee in unsettling people by telling them about the ghosts of their dead relatives, emphasizing information that Lan Sizhui wouldn't have known if it wasn't for the ghosts telling him.
  • World of No Grandparents: Lan Sizhui's only grandparent is his grand-uncle Lan Qiren as everyone else died.
