Fanfic / Kili's Promise

Go To

Kili's Promise is a completed The Hobbit fanfic by idrylla. It examines what might have happened if Fíli had survived the Battle of Five Armies. He is sent back to "take care of [his] family", and he learns what that means.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Abdicate the Throne: By the epilogue, Fíli has abdicated the throne in favor of his eldest son Hael.
  • Afterlife Antechamber: Chapter 3 primarily takes place in one of these as Fíli winds up there and wishes to continue on, but is stopped by a command by Thorin. This place returns in the last chapter when Fíli dies.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Kíli was bullied by other Dwarves for his looks.
  • Arc Words: "Take care of your family."
  • Disappeared Dad: Fíli mentions that his and Kíli's father died when they were very young, so Thorin stepped in as a father figure.
  • Distant Finale: The last two chapters take place hundreds of years later when Fíli dies of old age and is reunited with Thorin and Kíli in the afterlife.
  • Doomed by Canon: Thorin and Kíli.
  • Elves Versus Dwarves: Despite the friendship between Tauriel and the rest of Thorin's company, there is some animosity between the two races, mostly on the Dwarves' side because we see them more.
    • Some Dwarves think that Kíli and Tauriel's child should be drowned. These wind up getting into a fight with Nori.
    • Elrond expresses worry that the child will not be accepted by the Dwarves and should Fíli die young and without legitimate children, Kíli and Tauriel's child would be king and the Dwarves of Erebor wouldn't want to be led by a half-dwarf, half-elf.
    • Lord Khîm is dismissive of his daughter Eradan because she was born in an elf-forest and acted different.
  • History Repeats: Fíli becomes a father figure to his nephew Tíli, much like how his uncle Thorin helped raised him and Kíli.
  • Hollywood Homely: In-universe, in a case of Deliberate Values Dissonance. Among Dwarves, Kíli's more angular features, which would be more attractive to humans, were considered unattractive and other Dwarves would make fun of him, asking how he could be related to Thorin. In a similar case, Eradan has longer features and refers to herself as ugly when she first meets Fíli.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Elrond instinctively starts a conversation with Tauriel in Sindarin about her child until Fíli politely points out that he has no idea of what is being said in his own halls. Elrond is quick to admit his mistake.
  • Killed Offscreen: When Fíli finds himself in the Afterlife Antechamber in Chapter 3, he finds his uncle Thorin already there.
  • Long-Lived: Fíli lives past 300 years, which is quite ancient for dwarves, who typically live 250 years.
  • Missing Mom: Eradan's mother died when she was seven.
  • Nephewism: Fíli becomes a father figure for Kíli's son Tíli, much like how Thorin had been for Fíli and Kíli.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted; Eradan's father is named Khîm, which is the name of one of Mîm's sons in The Children of Húrin.
  • Outliving One's Offspring:
    • Lord Khîm lost his younger daughter to sickness when she was three.
    • Fíli outlives his daughter Aberfa, who died at the age of five.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Tauriel is pregnant with Kíli's child, conceived in between the point where Bard defeated Smaug and Kíli left for Erebor.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Fíli.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Dís is said to resemble her brother Thorin, but with happier eyes and softer features.
  • Taking the Bullet: Both Fíli and Kíli took grievous wounds for each other during the Battle of the Five Armies. In the end, only Fíli survived his wounds.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Dís becomes more welcoming towards Tauriel when she learns that Tauriel's pregnant with Kíli's child.
  • The Unfavorite: Eradan is the less loved of Lord Khim's daughters because of her meek, mild personality. This isn't helped by the fact that her younger sister, who was more traditionally Dwarvish, died at the age of three.
  • The Women Are Safe with Us: The remaining members of Thorin's company all pledge to help Tauriel.
Balin: We're with you laddie. You don't have to explain anything to us. We will protect anyone you have given sanctuary to, especially women, no matter their race.
  • You Are in Command Now: Much of the first half of the story is Fíli getting accustomed to being King Under the Mountain and therefore King of Durin's Folk.
