Go To

In the aftermath of her traumatic experience with the locker, Taylor thought she had managed to become a cape - one with the power to solidify gases, although for some strange reason it only works for a period of time that is slowly growing. However, when she takes to her first field test and jumps in to stop Lung and the ABB from killing a bunch of kids, she realizes she can also freeze things and put people to sleep... and as she meets more and more capes, she starts to gain more and more powers, all of them with a theme: they are always opposed to what the cape can do.

This is Heels Over Head, where you can follow Taylor in her guise as the newest Ward, Playlist, a Trump that becomes more powerful the more capes she meets and the more time she spends next to them.

Heels Over Head has examples of the following Tropes:

  • Captain Obvious: Regent's nickname for Taylor, because when she first met the Undersiders she activated the Tattletale remix, which rendered her unable to do anything but note and point out obvious details (which also helps her to No-Sell Tattletale's ability).
  • Combo Platter Powers: Taylor's power gives her the ability to gain multiple powers, which are "remixes" of other Capes' powers.
    • An Ice Person: Part of Lung's remix.
    • Attack Its Weak Point: Kid Win's remix lets Taylor identify the weak points of technological devices and how a strike could render a device useless or worse.
      • Technically, this is Taylor's power in a nutshell- an opposite power to the cape she's remixing.
      • Especially prevalent when she remixes Ms. Militia's power. For anyone else, it makes them forget a weapon exists, even when they're holding it (or are being injured by it). For Militia herself, it makes her power flash through every single weapon she's ever used to try to remind her.
    • Bears Are Bad News: One of Eidolon's remixes causes a bear to appear.
    • Emotion Bomb: Gallant's remix causes Taylor to shunt all her feelings to everyone around her, while making herself practically emotionless.
    • Gravity Master: Part of Alexandria's remix lets Taylor shoot a ray that makes the target heavier.
    • Healing Hands: Panacea's remix transforms Taylor into a copy of Panacea that can transfer her healing power to cloth, restoring those who accept it to restore their bodies to their normal state. It's the opposite of Panacea's power because her power isn't actually healing, it's basically sculpting someone's flesh, so it just restores people to their natural state. What's more, Panacea's power can't affect herself, so turning into Panacea means that Panacea's powers don't affect her.
    • Intangibility: Legend's remix lets Taylor make objects intangible as long as she's touching them.
    • Jack of All Trades: Eidolon's remix combines a power that is useless and changes whenever Taylor finds some use for it and a succession of random powers that change every half second, preventing her from making good use out of it.
    • Me's a Crowd: Oni Lee's remix, allows her to create copies of any cape that is close enough with their abilities and her memories as long as Oni Lee has made just as many copies of himself.
      • Vista's remix fills a space designated by Taylor with stationary copies of her - they cannot do anything, are considered alive (thus blocking Vista's power) and are easily destroyed, but whatever destroys them is stopped.
    • Super-Empowering: Othala's remix allows others to take a remix from her by touching her.
    • Time Stands Still: Clockblocker's remix renders her partially immune to his power, pulling her in a situation where she can move while no one else does and allows her to un-freeze anything affected by Clockblocker's power or anything similar while in that state.
    • Walking Techbane: Part of Über's remix allows Taylor to know how to render any device unable to work.
      • In general, this seems to be the remix of any Tinker power. In specific, Armsmaster and Kid Win's remixes are the opposite of theirs- she can tell how to make things less efficient and how to cram everything into one thing, respective to Armsmaster's Efficiency power and Kid Win's Modularity power. Bakuda's power gets an ability to disarm the bombs.
  • Crossdresser: Leet corners Taylor on the bus dressed as a woman and in a blonde wig in order to get her attention, since she promised to help them but hadn't yet.
  • Dramatic Irony: Principal Blackwell winces when the PRT tells her to have Sophia Hess watch out for who has been bullying Taylor.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: While testing out Gallant's remix, everyone starts getting bashful when Taylor is looking at Browbeat working out (Taylor was projecting her emotions on to everyone else). She fervently denies *any* of this.
  • Faking the Dead: Bakuda made a device that allowed her to escape dying because of her bombs.
  • Foreshadowing: Taylor still having one of her cape clones running after capturing Oni Lee foreshadows that it's actually one of his clones.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Rachel joins the Wards after she finds out that Taylor can create Precious Puppies out of nothing thanks to her remix and that said puppies will vanish once the remix fades; Rachel is very firm that she's not going to let that happen so she's watching Taylor's back from now on.
    • Shadow Stalker slowly - very slowly - starts to consider less violent means of achieving her objectives.
    • Taylor convinces Leet and Über to abandon their villainous ways by giving them a challenge: create a mecha capable of killing an Endbringer.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In-Universe, for one of Gladly's classes, Taylor comes up with the power of being able to charge fabric with healing power - the power she gets from Panacea's remix. It's even noted with good humor by Sophia, who was told of the class in question.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Bakuda (nearly) dies when one of her time bombs and one of her glass bombs explode close to her.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Director Emily Piggot was quite beautiful before all the mess in Ellisburg. Playlist's Panacea remix heals her and restores her previous beauty.
  • Meaningful Name: Playlist herself, since her powers are redone versions of other people's powers, she calls them remixes. And a collection of remixes is a playlist.
  • Necessary Drawback: Taylor's power is dependent on having other capes close enough to gain their remix. She also needs to remain close to those capes to keep their remix beyond a few minutes, and getting too many powers at the same time can render her unconscious. The amount of time she spends with capes is related to how long she keeps the powers after they leave her range- since she goes to school with Shadow Stalker, this means she can keep her air barrier power for several days between seeing Stalker, whereas capes she's just met will go away between a few hours and a few minutes.
    • The healing bandages that Panacea's remix produces reset someone's body to an original state. While this means that, if you're in a position you need a bandage the wound you suffered will go away, it might undo positive changes (like laser eye surgery, or your appendix might grow back).
    • Another drawback to Panacea's powers is that to use them, Taylor turns into Panacea- as in, her body physically becomes identical to Amy Dallon. The issue with this is that Amy and Taylor are not the same physical size and shape- Taylor is taller and less well developed, and thus her clothes suddenly become too long and too tight. This is somewhat rectified when Glory Girl takes Amy and Taylor shopping for clothes.
  • Omake: These turn up from time to time, submitted by readers. One particularly interesting one involved Lisa telling Rachel that the puppies Taylor summons with her Bitch remix would vanish forever if Taylor died during an Endbringer attack; Rachel proceeds to eliminate the Endbringer in a way that isn't described but clearly worked perfectly and befuddles Lisa because she can't work out how one would be able to do that to an Endbringer.
  • Power Copying: Inverted. Taylor's power allows her to gain powers that are thematically opposed to that of the cape she gets them from. For example, Shadow Stalker can become a gas-like shadow, so Taylor can solidify air, while Armsmaster's Tinker ability for increasing efficiency translates into Taylor knowing how to make any device less efficient.
  • Shout-Out:
    • One of Taylor's random unknown powers turns people into newts, and the report on it says that the victim (Eidolon) got better.
    • One of Taylor's constantly-changing powers allows her to steal 40 cakes (4 10s) from a local bakery (the PRT reimbursed them).
  • Skewed Priorities: Played for Laughs with why Rachel ends up with the PRT. She pretty much doesn't care if people die but she is adamant that the puppies Taylor summons with her Bitch remix can't disappear so she immediately declares her intent to stay as close to Taylor as possible.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Because Panacea got in contact with one of Taylor's Panacea Remix bandages, it allowed her to revert to before she was influenced by Vicky's aura, allowing her to realize what is happening with her attraction to her adopted sister. She promptly tells Vicky everything, preventing what happened to the two in canon.
  • Too Much for Man to Handle: Taylor's biggest drawback is that she gets massive headaches if she has too many capes in the vicinity, up to and including passing out from the strain of all the new powers she gets. Therefore, despite how absolutely essential she'd be at the biggest cape gatherings, the Endbringer fights (where she could unleash a thousand and one attacks against any foe she came across), the Triumvirate starts thinking of ways to allow her to do this without killing her from the strain.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Part of Playlist's Eidolon remix is a power that is entirely useless. If she ever finds a use for the power, it's replaced with something even more useless. Which surprisingly makes it the perfect counter for Eidolon, as his power gives him powers it thinks he need to combat a threat. So Taylor's remix makes Eidolon no more useful that any non-powered human: having numerous, rapidly-changing powers means that Eidolon's power can't pin down what it needs against Taylor, and it can't use a power-cancelling Trump power because of Taylor's other main power being so pathetic that it doesn't qualify as threatening enough for the Trump power, and if she does find a use for it, it swaps to something equally terrible to maintain that non-threat level. Overall, it makes Eidolon practically useless against Taylor.
