Go To

A Disease Of The Brain, by Coffin Liqueur (aka HPLovecats), is a Resident Evil and Danganronpa crossover fanfic.

It focuses heavily on Lucas Baker, who is a prisoner of Blue Umbrella after (an alternate version of) the events of Resident Evil 7. Several of the main characters of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair are also imprisoned by Blue Umbrella, as they have been infected with the "Z-Virus." Ibuki is placed in the cell next to Lucas; the two very different characters get on surprisingly well and are soon plotting to escape. Weirdness and gore ensue. Oh, and the Ultimate Imposter's around as well, just in case the story wasn't creepy enough without that extra source of paranoia.

A lot of characters from older Resident Evil games who haven't been seen in a while also turn up and get some characterisation.

Can be found on Archive of Our Own here.

A Disease Of The Brain contains examples of:

  • Brig Ball Bouncing: Lucas, although instead of sitting against a wall he's running around his cell, with Ibuki in the cell next to him trying to keep up: a much more active variation on the usual trope.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Lucas and Ibuki both have quite strange senses of humour, Ibuki in particular gets almost childishly enthusiastic about a ball game, and Lucas has enough Skewed Priorities to be concerned about missing Halloween because he's in prison.

  • Genki Girl: not quite as much as usual since she's in prison, and she has her moments of being lonely, bored, and scared, but Ibuki is still definitely this a lot of the time. She's especially upbeat when she's interacting with Lucas, playing ball games with him and trying to make friends.

  • Kill and Replace: The Ultimate Imposter does this to Officer Claypool.

  • Metalhead: Ibuki loves metal as much as ever, often thinking in terms of music comparisons or sounds, and comparing the behaviour of the Z-Virus infected to "a mosh-pit from hell."

  • Odd Friendship: Lucas Baker (Axe-Crazy murderer) and Ibuki Mioda (cute Genki Girl). Mostly from being imprisoned together, and both being Cloudcuckoolanders. Turns into Opposites Attract later on.

  • Shout-Out: Lucas claims to have "shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die."

  • Super-Senses: Ibuki's super-hearing allows her to figure out a lot about Lucas just by listening to him moving around his cell.

  • Third-Person Person: Ibuki, as in canon. Lucas lampshades this once by asking if she's talking to her imaginary friend.

  • Villain Protagonist: While a lot of characters get focus, Lucas is the closest thing the story has to a main character, and he's just as murderously evil as he is in canon.
