The (slightly disputed) father of Batman.

Robert Kane (born Robert Kahn, October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was an American comic book writer, animator and artist who co-created the DC Comics character Batman alongside Bill Finger. Born in New York City to Ashkenazi Jewish parents, Robert Kahn attended Dewitt Clinton High School with fellow cartoonist Will Eisner, and then changed his name to Robert Kane after graduation. He studied art at Cooper Union before joining Fleischer Studios in 1934.

He entered the world of comics two years later, freelancing with several publishers before finding his home at DC Comics where, in response to the success of Superman, he conceived "the Bat-Man", drawing inspirations from classing swashbucklers like Zorro, Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of the ornithopter, and the 1930 film The Bat Whispers. While there is some controversy regarding how much Kane and his co-artist Bill Finger contributed to the final franchise, it is widely accepted that Kane created most of the original Rogues Gallery.

Kane retired from DC Comics in 1966 to focus instead on fine art. He sidestepped into television animation, creating the characters of Cool McCool and Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse. He worked as a consultant for Batman (1989) and its three sequels, stating that Val Kilmer was his favorite portrayal of Batman.
