Chewbacca is a story starring everyone's favorite Wookiee, (naturally), as written by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Phil Noto, who had previously drawn covers for other Star Wars Expanded Universe comics and would later illustrate Poe Dameron.
Chewbacca finds himself stranded on Andelm IV while on a mission for the Rebellion, and ends up helping an escaped slave named Zarro rescue her father from imprisonment by an alien slave master, Jaum, has bought off everyone on the planet as no one can pay his debts, in part thanks to the deflation of credits by the destruction of the Death Star.
Not to be mistaken with the 2001 Chewbacca comic series, which revolves around his history as characters look back after his death. Don't worry; it's just Legends.
The first issue was released on October 15, 2015, and concluded on December 30, 2015.
In 2018, the comic was adapted as a young reader's book, Chewie and the Courageous Kid, as a part of the Solo multimedia project.
"HRRRAAAAHHH!!!"
- All There in the Script: The writer made two scripts, the one where Chewie speaks in Wookiee, and one including translations of what he's saying. Of course, the latter is for Lucasfilm's internal use.
- Armor-Piercing Question: Zarro finally convinces Chewie to help her free her dad by asking if he even knows what it means to be a slave. Considering Wookiees are subjects of the slave trade, oh ho, you asked the right question.Zarro: Do you know what that means? To be a slave?
- Badass and Child Duo: Chewie and Zarro.
- The Big Guy: Chewbacca, of course.Zarro: Look, I just need people to think you're a big strong hero. You're huge, and could probably scare Jaum into letting everyone go.
- Boyish Short Hair: Zarro. She looks rather androgynous.
- Eloquent in My Native Tongue: Zarro doesn't understand Shyriiwook. Chewbacca understands Basic, but Wookies are unable to speak it due to the arrangement of their vocal cords. The fact that Han and Threepio aren't around to translate doesn't help.
- Evil Debt Collector: Jaum. Also intersects with, appropriately enough, Screw the Rules, I Have Money!.
- Grievous Harm with a Body: While Chewbacca is carrying a Gonk droid (don't ask), one of the villains mocks him for bringing "a dead power droid to a blaster fight." Chewie promptly smashed the droid into the mook's head.
- Hero of Another Story: The opening crawl makes it obvious that Chewbacca considers Luke, Han, and Leia to be this in regards to the events of A New Hope.
- Ironically enough, Chewbacca himself could be considered this, at least in the first issue. The first few pages are devoted to Zarro and her father's imprisonment — it isn't until well into the issue that we even meet our Wookiee friend.
- Humble Hero: Parodied in the opening crawl.Narrator: The evil Galactic Empire's greatest weapon, the Death Star, has been destroyed by CHEWBACCA, warrior son of the planet KASHYYYK... with some help from his trusty sidekick Han and his friends Luke and Leia. But Chewie is not one to grandstand. There is still much to accomplish.
- Language Barrier: Zarro has no idea what Chewbacca is saying, which causes her in the beginning to constantly guess the opposite of what Chewbacca is going to do. For example, after pulling the "Do you know what it means to be a slave?" card, Chewie gets pissed and starts digging through his cockpit. Zarro assumes that he's angry that she's pulling at his morality and now he's just trying to fix his A-Wing as fast as he can so he can Screw This, I'm Outta Here, but then sees him pull out his bowcaster fully ready to kick some ass.
- Ridiculous Exchange Rates: The destruction of the Death Star has deflated the value of credits. Zarro's father would have enough money to pay his debt to Jaum if it weren't for this, which leads to Jaum enslaving him & his daughter and thus kicking the story off.
- Villain Team-Up: Jaum wants to sell Andelm-4 to the Empire.
- What a Piece of Junk: Chewbacca's A-Wing crashes on Andelm-4. The narrator even says that it's what inhabitants of the Outer Rim call a "hunk of junk."
