Humans

    Marion
The main heroine who visits the Anderghast mine to discover what happened to her father.
  • The Cameo: Appears in A House for Alesa 3 as a survivor alongside the Automaton, Mia Gepetto, Alex and Sandy.
  • Curiosity Is a Crapshoot: Played for tragedy in the ending where continuing to investigate the mine after she finds an exit results in her becoming Scarlet.
  • Determinator: Marion proves to be incredibly stubborn, in a rather dangerous sense. She just won't give up on the goal of finding her father, no matter how much proof she finds confirming he's long gone.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Tends to make very reckless decisions, such as releasing a monster from containment or using a car to escape the mine even though she doesn't know how to drive.

    Jane
The caretaker of the mine.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Talks about how Marion's hair smells nice as she dies.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Her thought process can be bizarre, such as kidnapping a young woman to have company or commenting how good her hair smell as she dies. Justified, as she escaped from an insane asylum.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Lied to Marion about finding her father because she wanted to have some company. Marion isn't too sympathetic about it when she finds out.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Jane lied about having found Marion's father; in truth, she wanted to kidnap Marion and have has as company.
  • Kill and Replace: Jane did this to the original caretaker, murdering him and stuffing his body in her basement so she could take his place.

Monsters (Unmarked Spoilers)

    General
The monsters haunting the Anderghast mine.
  • Collective Identity: The three spider-head triplets are all referred to as Subject 015.
  • Perverse Puppet: Subject 013 is a doll-like monster who kills anyone she comes into contact with.
  • Spider Tank: Subject 025 had to be stuffed inside a mechanical spider-like tank to keep it stable. When chasing Marion, the only organic part seen is its hand.
  • Villain Teleportation: Subject 013 has the power to teleport during chases.
  • Waddling Head: Subject 015 is three triplets who are now just heads with spider legs.
  • You Are Number 6: With the exception of Scarlet, every monster is referred to as Subject number, presumably to dehumanize the people they were doing horrific experiments on.

    Subject 000 - Scarlet
The leader of the monsters trapped in the mine.
  • Alternate Self: Her true identity is an alternate future counterpart of Marion.
  • Anti-Villain: Scarlet is terrifying and incredibly destructive, but only because she was experimented on by scientists. Her offsprings are more villainous though.
  • Big Bad: She is the mother of the monsters in the titular mine and a time-displaced version of Marion herself who orders the monsters to kill Marion so she will not meet her and become her.
  • Body Horror: Has scarlet red skin, several deformities and her insides are filled with sentient tumors.
  • Cassandra Truth: When the scientists find her, she tells them that she comes from the future and her true name is Marion. They couldn't care less.
  • Jerkass to One: She drops her gloomy behavior whenever Jane is involved and becomes more cold and ruthless to the point she tears her limbs upon encountering her. Considering Jane was the one responsible for sending Marion to the mine and thus setting the chain of events that lead to Scarlet's creation, it's no wonder she holds a grudge.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: She is so strong that even when she was still locked up in the underground lab, a Tailor-Made Prison meant to keep her sealed away, she still managed to influence the area around her to a lesser, yet still unnervingly powerful extent. All the paranormal activity Marion witnesses as she journeys through the facility is all her doing despite being imprisoned at the time.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is Scarlet because of her blotchy red skin.
  • Mother of a Thousand Young: Was made into one of these after being captured by greedy scientists. Imprisoned and kept in a weakened state, her tumors were farmed and implanted into others to create Half-Human Hybrids and monsters.

    Subject 008
The monster that haunts the outermost part of the mine and the one that killed several miners.
  • Serial Killer: Stated to have been this even before becoming an experimental subject.
  • Starter Villain: It's the first monster Marion encounters and the one who chases her throughout the first area, but vanishes afterwards.
  • You Killed My Father: Was the monster that killed Marion's father at the start of the game.

    Subject 032 - Helga
A seemingly friendly scientist trapped in one of the rooms who asks Marion to free her. She is actually a particularly infamous subject known for being manipulative.
