The family:

    In General
The main characters of the game that are just trying to survive until rescue comes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: There are three events where the family can choose to raid a school shelter, a retirement home, or the neighbors. Choose to raid any of them, and everyone will take a massive hit to their sanity.
  • Nuclear Family: Ted, Dolores and their two kids, Mary Jane and Timmy. Their picket fence had probably been blown to smithereens, but they can get a dog.
  • Sanity Slippage: Every character (minus the pets) can go through this. When insane, they have a risk of destroying items in the bunker, or if it goes on for long enough, they will leave the bunker and not come back.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Choosing any of the raid options above will also lock you out of being rescued by the Twins.

    Ted

Ted

Ted is the husband of Dolores and the father of Mary Jane and Timmy. He's one of the two playable characters during scavenging; when he is non-playable and has to be picked up, he occupies 3 weight slots.

  • Player Character: Ted was originally the only playable character at the beginning of the game before Dolores was made playable in the August 15th, 2018 update. During scavenging, you can get a Non-Standard Game Over if Ted doesn't make it to the shelter in time.
  • Time-Passage Beard: He grows one as time passes. There's an event where he attempts to shave it if he has the axe. Yes, Ted can be injured if luck is not on your side.
  • We Cannot Go On Without You: As a playable character in scavenging, if he doesn't make it inside the shelter in time, it's an instant game over. Subverted once you're in the shelter, as Ted can die as long as Dolores remains alive (provided you brought her); it's only when both die that the game ends.

    Dolores

Dolores

Dolores is the wife of Ted and the mother of Mary Jane and Timmy. She's one of the two playable characters during scavenging; when she is non-playable and has to be picked up, she occupies 2 weight slots.

  • House Wife: Complete with apron.
  • Player Character: As of the August 15th, 2018 update, you can choose to play as her instead of Ted during scavenging.
  • Only Sane Woman: Due to her being the most immune to insanity, she can end up as this if everyone else loses it.
  • We Cannot Go On Without You: If both she and Ted die once you're in the shelter, it's game over.

    Mary Jane

Mary Jane

Mary Jane is the daughter of Ted and Dolores and the sister of Timmy. She's a tuba player.

  • Advertised Extra: In-game, Mary Jane can only mutate through rare, specific circumstances and is normal at all other times. In the promotional images for the game, Mary Jane is seldom depicted unmutated.
  • Birthday Episode: Alongside Timmy, Mary Jane can have her birthday as an in-game event, where the player can choose one of a set of items to give her. Mary Jane's sanity decreases significantly if the player doesn't give her any of the items that the game asks for.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: She's the most prone of the family to insanity, and can behave like this on her birthday event if she isn't given an item.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: If she becomes a mutant, she's still the same person despite becoming a big, purple thing with a hunchback and lopsided smile.
  • Lethal Joke Character: At the outset of the game she's the weakest member of the family, but she can potentially become extremely powerful if she mutates.
  • Magikarp Power: Potentially averted, but she's generally the most useless member of the family, unless she becomes a mutant, at which point she becomes Purposefully Overpowered.
  • Nuclear Mutant: If she's turned into a mutant she can fight off raiders, won't get sick or injured, doesn't need water anymore and can be sent outside constantly without taking a break.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She becomes the most formidable member of the family if she mutates.

    Timmy

Timmy

Timmy is the son of Ted and Dolores and Mary Jane's brother. He used to be a boy scout before the apocalypse.

  • Birthday Episode: Alongside Mary Jane, Timmy can have his birthday as an in-game event, where the player can choose one of a set of items to give him. Timmy's sanity decreases significantly if the player doesn't give him any of the items.
  • Madness Makeover: If allowed to go fully insane, Timmy will wear a soup can on his head and a cape made from toliet paper, while holding a teddy bear head.
  • Youthful Freckles: Timmy is the youngest member of the family and he has freckles, which also go along with his ginger hair.

Animals:

    Pancake

Pancake

A stray dog that the family can find in a series of events.

  • Canine Companion: Once the player makes the right choices for his events, Pancake will stay permanently in the shelter and, upon obtaining him, everyone gets a boost to their sanity and events can happen where you take him for a walk and he finds supplies. Also, he doesn't need any food and water after you get him for good.

    Sharikov

Sharikov

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f23ca9255b8e9d50ef052c0f1b702b1e.png

A stray cat that the family can find in a series of events.

  • Accidental Hero: Sharikov is just a cat seeking food and shelter, but by living in the family's shelter he draws the attention of the federal agents. This, in turn, could result in the family being moved to a Presidental Bunker and having its long-term survival assured.
  • Animal Jingoism: If he enters the shelter with Pancake in the shelter, they'll get into a fight, with Pancake forced to leave.
  • Cats Are Mean: If he remains in the shelter for too long, Sharikov will call an army of felines that will progressively eat all the food and effectively evict the family from their bunker if they don't have enough. However, if you have enough food to feed all the cats, you can get an ending in which the family considers that the cats have become their overlords.
