The teachers and other staff members of the Saint Louis Royal House in Saint-Cyr.While a large part of the staff was made up of nuns, the teachers were specifically laywomen who took temporary vows for as long as they would teach.

     Madame de Maintenon

     Madame de Brinon
The headmistress of the Royal House.

     Mademoiselle de Loubert
The teacher of the Reds, who takes charge of the Institute after Madame de Brinon departs.

     Catherine du Pérou
The teacher of the Yellows
  • Adorkable: She is reduced to a gleeful blubbering mess when she meets her idol, Jean Racine.
  • Ascended Fangirl: She gets to teach an exclusive play to her pupils, written by her hero.
  • Cool Teacher: Due to her youth and general empathy, she is more lenient on her pupils than the other teachers. She is also the only one among them who actually was a student of Saint-Cyr before she started teaching there.
  • Last-Name Basis: Averted for the readers: she is the only teacher whose first name is given. It helps categorize her as closer to the students, who are adressed by their first and last name, than to the ladies of Saint Louis.
  • Young and in Charge: She is 21 in Book 1, only five or six years older than the Yellows.

     Madame de Crécy
The teacher of the Blues

     Madame de Clérambault
An assistant teacher who takes over the Blue class when Madame de Crécy is indisposed.
  • A Mother To Her Girls: Her motherly patience and kindness make ever the hardest sacrifices easier; just ask Gertrude.
  • Loved by All: Because she is replacing the universally hated Madame de Crécy and is not a complete monster, the Blues grow really fond of her during her short tenure.

     Madame de Fontaines
The new headmistress of the House.
  • Remember the New Guy?: She was never even mentionned before being made headmistress in the timeskip between 1693 and 1696.

     Madame de Glapion
The teacher of the Greens.
  • Stern Teacher: Though she is far from the worst in Saint-Cyr, Marie-Adélaïde sees her as this.

[[folder: Madame d'Hozier and Sister Anna Josse]]The ladies in charge of the infirmary.

  • Chekhov's Classroom: Madame d'Hozier is the one who tells Isabeau and Gertrude about the properties of hemlock.
  • School Nurse
  • Witch Doctor: Most of their work is done with prayer and herbs and Sister Anna is in charge of the medicinal garden of the House.

     Bishop Godet des Marais
A prelate close to Madame de Maintenon who becomes the spiritual director of Saint-Cyr after Esther.
  • Animal Motifs: The Doves compare him to a crow - tall and skinny, dressed in all black and sinister.
  • The Fundamentalist: After the events of Esther and what happened with Adélaïde, Charlotte and Hortense, he convinces Madame de Maintenon that anything but a perfectly monacal education is dooming the girls to hell, and does not hesitate to tell them.
  • The Dreaded: All the Doves hate him and his influence, even dutiful, obedient Isabeau; most of the teachers too find him too hard.
