Main Characters

    Felicity Porter

Felicity Elizabeth Porter

Portrayed by: Keri Russell

Felicity is an introverted, shy, studious girl who decides on a whim to go to New York University in a bid for freedom from her domineering parents. Despite using her crush on a boy from her high school as an excuse, Felicity decides to stay to finally start living her life on her own terms.

  • Book Smart: Felicity graduates high school with honours and is headed for Pre-Med at Stanford. She even tutors Ben and helps him out during finals.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: With Ben. Whenever he can't deal with his feelings, Ben shuts down and pushes people away, or gets violent. Felicity spends a lot of time trying to coax him out of moods and getting him to communicate, which gives her a lot of anguish.
  • Character Narrator: In a sense. Felicity records tapes for her friend, Sally, where she relays her experiences in New York and intimate thoughts about them. Sally sends Felicity tapes in return, as they live far from each other, chronicling her life.
  • The Ingenue: Very much so. Felicity seems to have had a narrow social circle, if any, as her closest confidante is her former French tutor, Sally. She has little life experience or seemingly any knowledge of how to interact socially with her peers.

    Noel Crane

Noel Crane

Portrayed by: Scott Foley
Noel is a caring and kind guy, who's a bit nerdy about computers and studies Graphic Design. He suffers from low self-esteem, which comes into play when he battles Ben for Felicity's affections. He's very logical and when he can't solve emotional problems with his mind, he tends to panic and self-sabotage.
  • Always Someone Better: Noel has this feeling with his older brother, who was most popular in high school and is, per Noel, good at everything - he even works in Graphic Design, which is Noel's field of study. Noel gets caught up in a similar knock at his self-esteem with Felicity, feeling she's always choosing Ben over him.
  • Book Smart: Noel does so well at college that he becomes a T.A. in his junior year. He majors in Computer Science, is adept at animation, and has an interest in art.
  • Nice Guy: Noel is kind and helpful to others, always trying his best to aid in any situation he can.
  • Sensitive Artist: Despite approaching life through logic, Noel is very emotional and sensitive, which he deflects through humour. He is empathetic, which makes him skilled at reading and being there for his friends.
  • The Smart Guy: Noel is this to most of his friends. In his position as R.A., he guides a lot of the students, but he also helps all his friends, and is generally perceived as the smart guy of the gang that people come to if they need help with something practical too.

    Ben Covington

Benjamin Steven Covington

Portrayed by: Scott Speedman
Ben is a popular and coveted guy who moves to New York to escape a bad home life with an alcoholic father who mistreats his mother. He doesn't have a lot of confidence in himself, and tends to be down on himself when he doesn't perform well academically. He often doesn't know how to deal with his feelings, which leads him to violent outbursts or shutting people out.
  • Big Man on Campus: Ben was voted most popular in high school and seems to have no issue charming his way into everyone's life, even in the bigger pond that is university life and New York.
  • Book Dumb: Played with. Ben tends to think of himself this way mainly due to his low self-esteem and tends to quit easily when things get tough because of it. He later finds direction at school and applies himself despite the subject being difficult.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: With Felicity. Whenever Ben can't deal with his feelings, he shuts down and pushes people away, or gets violent. Felicity spends a lot of time trying to coax him out of moods and getting him to communicate, which gives her a lot of anguish.
  • The Charmer: Ben knows exactly how to wrap women around his finger and what effect he has on them.
  • Chick Magnet: Pretty much every woman who comes near him falls for him. One of his friends's girlfriends even just undresses in front of him as her way of making a move.
  • Odd Friendship: Ben and Javier, because Javier is so bubbly and emotionally forthcoming and responsible, while Ben is supposedly a macho man who can't deal with his feelings.
  • Working Out Their Emotions: When Ben gets sad, frustrated, or angry, he usually turns to basketball.

    Julie Emrick

Julie Emrick née Anderson

Portrayed by: Amy Jo Johnson
Julie is an outgoing and nice girl, who comes to New York to find her birth parents. She studies Music and plays guitar, hoping to work as a musician, playing gigs at the local bars. She and Ben have an instant connection and she fights her attraction to him due to Felicity's crush.
  • Happily Adopted: Julie knows she's adopted, but had a happy childhood and home.
  • Invisible Parents: Julie's parents are mentioned, but never seen on the show. Julie's birth mother appears quite a bit and Her birth father is seen once.

    Elena Tyler

Elena Tyler

Portrayed by: Tangi Miller
Elena is a tough, studious local girl who is focused on getting into med school and suffers no distractions. Despite being used to doing everything herself, Elena's friends show her that she doesn't always have to, and she slowly lets them support her, and offer her something outside of studying 24-7. Elena is smart, sometimes snarky, and a very loyal friend. She later meets fellow future aspiring doctor, Tracy, whom she falls in love with.
  • Opposites Attract: Elena tends to get this with her love interests.
    • With Tracy, they are both smart, driven, and competitive pre-med students, but Tracy is laid back and a jokester, where Elena is serious and can be neurotic, so they balance each other well.
    • With Blair, he was easy-going and social where Elena was as described above.
    • With Trevor, another pre-med student whom Elena actually tutors. He is a party guy and inspires her to have fun.
  • Token Minority: Elena is the only principal character of colour (Javier is recurring until Season 4).

    Sean Blumberg

Sean Blumberg

Portrayed by: Greg Grunberg
Sean is in his mid-20s, living in a New York loft where he rents out some rooms to students. He considers himself an inventor and tries to find his niche that he can sell to make big money someday. He keeps an idea book and comes up with making a 'docuventary' about student life at UNY, annoying his friends with his persistence. He is nice and outgoing, always the life of the party, but secretly wishes he was a success.

    Meghan Rotundi

Meghan Rotundi

Portrayed by: Amanda Foreman
Meghan is Felicity's mysterious roommate who is usually out all night partying, with Felicity wondering when she has time to study. Meghan keeps a mystery box that she won't let Felicity look in. The roommates don't get along as Meghan considers Felicity a 'square' and is rude and abrasive to her, while Felicity is judgy and put off by Meghan.

    Javier Quintata

Javier Clemente Quintata

Portrayed by: Ian Gomez

  • Odd Friendship: Ben and Javier, because Javier is so bubbly and emotionally forthcoming and responsible, while Ben is supposedly a macho man who can't deal with his feelings.
