Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] King Dosleum.

[tup] Pokemon quote (I think having "evil" in quotation marks shows Kodai's full of crap)

Ah, Vachss, the same fellow who gave us William X, Malady.

So far, Ambar has been the only one to cast a vote for Flavio Volpe ([tdown]), anyone else?

I think I'll [tup] Flavio. There's a line where a Freudian Excuse stops explaining things, and he's crossed it.

[tup] to King Dosleum and Flavio.

Viggo did get one more up vote... do you think that's enough to rule in his favor? 10up-6down... maybe. I'm not gonna be a Single-Issue Wonk about it, but one more vote would close the case.

Flavio's a little weirder than most, but plenty of people get bullied and don't become torturers. But... I think I'll abstain. I don't think I'll ever vote against, but I will think on it.

Also, "The fact that Vachss is a child defense lawyer and has said that he based a lot of the crimes in his books off of real life stuff does not help things."

...Jesus. I can't imagine how awful these real life things must be.

You know, after thinking about it, I'm not even sure Hobgoblin's worth proposing. Yes, he plans to nuke NYC, but aside from the fact that for all we know he might've been willing to not do it if he got the money, there's the issue that he's basically a pawn of Doc Ock, the Greater-Scope Villain of the entire trilogy and the Big Bad of the third book. Yes, Ock has FAR more resources, but considering it's all but directly stated that he GAVE Hobby the nuke, I'm not sure if Hobby's more heinous than any other of Doc Ock's henchmen.

And while I'd like to propose Ock (who's DEFINITELY heinous enough; if successful, his plot would like have resulted in millions of deaths AT LEAST, if not tens or hundreds of millions), general consensus when I posted his Motive Rant was that he was a WIE (TommyFresh, Lighty, Scraggle, Ambar, and G-Editor thought he was; FW and Overlord didn't think so; I myself wasn't sure). If any others think differently I can try and effortpost him, but as it stands it's probably not worth it.

For the curious, he intends to destabilize the Euro and nuke numerous major cities worldwide.

[up][up] AT least five. Might as well wait until the season ends. As for whether she counts, I'll leave that up to Beast.

[up][up][up] Regarding the characters you think should be cut, could you elaborate on their Freudian Excuses? That would make it a lot easier for us to judge if they should be cut.

Xandred's Sentai counterpart, Chimatsuri Doukoku, does not count.

He legitimately cares for Dayu, regretting sending her away and burning her shamisan (Is that how you spell it?), and actually mourns her death.

I'll look at Ryuya a bit more later, but as I've also seen Go Go V later, very good update to Grandienne, who's a rock-solid keeper.

That said, yes, I kind of feel Jennifer is a cut due to her redeeming quality for Derek as well which the actress confirmed was real and she clearly hesitates when trying to fight him at the end of her storyline.

From YMMV.Geek Love

  • Complete Monster: Arty could certainly qualify. He murders a few infant siblings in his early childhood because he's jealous of their potential fame. He's verbally, and later physically, abusive to his Love Martyr of a sister Oly. He arranges the rape, forced childbirth, and half-lobotomy of his conjoined twin sisters, Ellie and Iphy, half because he's jealous of their fame, half to "punish" them for having sex with other men without his permission. He manipulates his psychic little brother Chick into using his powers to mutilate and lobotomize dozens of members of Arturo's own "Arturian cult" by claiming he's "helping them" even though he knows it makes Chick physically sick and emotionally worn out. Said cult is made up of people he manipulated into giving their lifesaving for the "privilege" of surgically removing their limbs so they can be just like him. Said cult members, he's implied to suck dry financially and then leaves for dead on the side of the road once he's done with them. Oh yeah, and his undyingly loyal sister Oly? He threatens to have her daughter, and his, fed to the literal Fat Slob Child by Rape he forced on Ellie and Iphy, because said daughter is too "normal" and thus "useless" to him. And Oly knows he's not exaggerating. She sends her infant daughter away because she knows Arty will kill her if he has half a mind. And he does all of this just to hide his insecurities of being "just an industrial accident." By the end of the novel, he has ruined, and ended, dozens of people's lives all for his own selfish ends, and feels no remorse over it.

[up][up] That was done by Demon Duck Of Doom but it got edited. I'm not sure it's better or worse as a paragraph. It does describe his crimes well but that opening sentence is throwing me off.

I've axed that entry, left a commented out note on the page, and messaged the troper. Adding an unapproved entry could be chalked up to ignorance; readding that deleted entry simply isn't excusable.

Anyways, I'll write up my Wereworld keepers and Zarm now and I'll include a modified Rita with that batch...

  • Vincent of Redmire, initially the scheming twin brother of Baron Hector who inadvertently causes his father's death and ends up dead in an attempt to murder Hector for the throne of the Dalelands, ends up becoming far more evil than even his brother could have predicted upon becoming a Vile. Haunting Hector and driving him to gradual madness, Hector turns his once-noble brother into a murderer and a torturer of innocents, eagerly convincing him to slaughter his former allies and all the witnesses to this — including a harmless cabin boy, in one case — ultimately precipitating Hector's betrayal of the Wolf's Council and sell-out of the Dalelands to the evil Prince Lucas. Upon devouring the spirit of Hector's old mentor and seizing Icegarden, Vincent becomes far more proactive in his brother's schemes, eagerly torturing Duchess Freya for weeks on end in order to wrestle the Wyrmstaff out of her and accidentally influencing his murder of Queen Amelie, of which Vincent cruelly taunts Hector about. Eventually, tired of his brother's unused potential, Vincent overtakes and fully possesses Hector himself, keeping his brother's mind aware and helpless as he slaughters and resurrects even his own allies, keeping their souls tortuously bound to their dead bodies for his own advantage. Rechristened Lord Blackhand, Vincent starts resurrecting the dead by the thousands to slaughter all in their wake, decorating Icegarden's walls with the bodies of those he's slaughtered and driving his legions in a crusade to destroy whatever cannot be dominated. Vincent goes from a smug, would-be warlord to a corrupter, a literal monster, and an eventual tyrant who becomes a greater threat than even than Prince Lucas himself, and eventually dies as one of the greatest threats to have ever scourged the Seven Realms.
  • Deadeye, the captain of the Hellhound and a wereshark in the employ of Lord Ghul, makes a name for himself on the White Sea as a practitioner of brutal violence and rampant cannibalism. Attacking the smuggler ship Lucky Shot upon learning of the presence of werelords on it, Deadeye slaughters many of the crew himself and eats its captain alive before taking those who remain as his prisoners and slaves. Holding a special affinity for the werelord Whitley, Deadeye subjects Whitley to his perverted attentions whilst keeping her collared, informing Whitley's intention to make her his bride in between subtle hints of violence. Upon being attacked by the Maelstrom, Deadeye snaps and starts massacring both enemy soldiers and his own men, brutally tearing apart Captain Ransome's young friend Hob shortly before his own death.

  • Captain Planet and the Planeteers: The Spirit of Destruction, Zarm, is arguably the strongest and most deadly adversary of Gaia and the Planeteers. A former Spirit of the Earth exiled by Gaia, Zarm dedicates himself to bringing ruin and destruction in all forms to Gaia and all she protects out of vengeful spite, having consumed at least one planet to the tides of destruction and constantly attempting to do the same to Earth. Zarm attempts to initiate all-out nuclear war on Earth, painfully reverts Gaia to a withered old lady incapable of stopping the Earth from dying and taking over the Earth for a ten-year-period of time where the Earth has become desiccated and ruined, coins a strategy he calls "scorched Earth" by convincing world leaders to obliterate their own land and people, and nearly dooms the Planeteers' efforts to stop an alternate timeline where the Eco-Villains' descendants rule the planet by smugly ordering a young girl Ma-ti saves murdered. A sadist drunk on his own capacity for destruction, Zarm is one of the single greatest sources of human misery within the show.

  • Power Rangers 2017: Rita Repulsa, the former Green Ranger, was once a noble hero before her ambition drives her to slaughter her comrades and mortally wound her former friend Zordon. Resurfacing countless years later, Rita descends on the fishing town of Angel Grove and starts brutally murdering innocent people for their gold to regain her powers—in one instance tearing a homeless man apart to get at his gold teeth—burning down an entire populated building to demonstrate the power of her Putties. Capturing and then killing a man to draw in the Rangers, Rita tortures the location out of Earth's Zeo Crystal out of the Rangers and then callously (temporarily) kills Billy by drowning him in front of the others once he wears out his use to her. Finally rising up a monstrous Zord of her own making that she calls Goldar, Rita starts decimating Angel Grove to find and take the powers of the Zeo Crystal. Rita's ultimate goal is nothing short of absolute godhood by harnessing the power of the Zeo Crystal—consequentially killing off all life on the planet, something Rita is only too gleeful to do. Barely resembling her original iteration, Rita brings a level of incredible seriousness to this otherwise lighthearted and fun film and is ultimately nothing less than a psychotic, murderous monster.

There. How's Zarm look in particular?
