  • 21st Century Serial Killer: Charles opens up a woman's throat in front of Aaron.
  • 68 Kill:
    • Liza murders her sugar daddy Ken by sneaking up on him while he is masturbating and slashing his throat.
    • Later, Violet is murdered offscreen by Monica the same way.
  • American Nightmare (1983): Tina is tackled by Tony and subsequently killed by having her throat slashed.
  • American Scarecrow: The killer manages to do this to Joey in the barn.
  • Annabelle: The titular villain Anabelle Higgins is seen with a slit neck.
  • Anger of the Dead: Rooker has his number two slash Stephen's throat in front of Alice.
  • Ashes of Time: Tony Leung's Blind Swordsman dies in this manner when the leader of the bandit army he's fighting slices his jugular while he's busy fending off several mooks.
  • Done in the opening of Assassination Games. The blood is very understated with the victim taking a while to realize their throat has been cut.
  • Avengers: Endgame: Ronin/Hawkeye slices the throat of a Yakuza boss in a sword duel. As he quickly starts to beg for his life, Ronin finishes him off.
  • In Bad Taste, the alien chef mocks the captive Giles by doing the throat slit gesture with a knife that he has in his hand. A mook named Robert attempts to mimic the gesture with his sharpened bayonet but accidentally cuts his own throat.
  • Belly (1998): Lennox, the Jamaican drug kingpin is killed in this manner by a female assassin sent by a rival drug lord.
  • Berkshire County: One of the intruders kills a cop by slitting his throat.
  • Bethany: Aaron accidentally does this to Dr. Brown when he thinks he sees Bethany strangling him.
  • Blood Bags: Near the start of the movie, the killer catches Tony and cuts his throat open with a knife.
  • Blood Pi: Emma's first victim is her mother, who she kills by slashing her across the throat with a knife.
  • Blood Ransom: At the start of the movie, Mr. Manningham gets his throat opened up. However, only the side of his neck is shown with blood on it.
  • In Braveheart, the Plot-Triggering Death that carries William Wallace through the entire film. Wallace's secret wife Murron gets her throat cut offscreen by the Magistrate. Following his Roaring Rampage of Revenge, Wallace kills the Magistrate the same way, this time shown in vivid detail, kicking off a Scotland-wide rebellion.
  • Karen's body is found with a slit throat in The Burning.
  • In the prologue of The Butchers, Luther kills Simon's mother by slitting her throat while Simon watches.
  • Cadaver (2020): Hans kills himself in front of Leonora and her husband Jacob by slicing his throat open. Except it was just an act. He turns up later, alive and well, still wearing the fake skin on his neck, with the tube for the fake blood sticking out.
  • Cain Hill: One of the crew gets killed by having their throat sliced open.
  • Capps Crossing: David takes a couple of lives by slitting their throats.
  • In The Car: Road to Revenge, Mila tries to escape when the gang storms Daria's house, but is caught and has her throat slit.
  • The Case of the Bloody Iris: The killer murders David by cutting his throat. Jennifer discovers his body in Professor Isaacs' apartment.
  • Child's Play:
    • Chucky gives one to barber Botnick with a straight razor in Child's Play 3.
    • The officer who fetches Chucky's fragments in Bride of Chucky gets one from Tiffany when he tries to look inside the bag.
  • A Classic Horror Story: The hooded members of the Malevolent Masked Men kill Riccardo and Sofia by slitting their throats after adding Riccardo's ears and Sofia's eyeballs to their giant wicker man.
  • Clown Kill: Charlie Boy kills Colin by running a blade along his throat. He's also revealed to have killed much of the cast when their bodies are revealed sitting at a table.
  • Compulsion (2016): Both human sacrifices are killed by a single cut across the throat.
  • Conan the Barbarian (1982) has a more realistic example: there's some thrashing around and it takes quite a while for the mook to go down. On the other hand, its sequel features a man getting his throat slit, then yelling.
  • In The Con is On, Irina casually slits the throat of a gambler who makes the mistake of thinking she is a waitress.
  • Cure: One of the only things tying the murders together is the "X" slashed across the throats of the victims.
  • In Dead Birds, Joseph kills one the sentries at the bank by slitting his throat: the first of a lot of deaths to follow.
  • The killer in Death Walks on High Heels kills Nicole's father and Vanessa by slitting their throats.
  • Dead in Tombstone: This is how Gurerro kills Washington: silently taking him out at the back of the group while the rest of the gang looks down the mine tunnel.
  • Mary has her throat slashed as she bends over Gabriella's corpse in Deranged (2012).
  • The Devil's Advocate has a quite shocking one of these when the protagonist's wife kills herself this way right in front of him.
  • The final fight of The Dragon Family have the eldest Lung brother being thrown headfirst into a glass cabinet by two mooks. The mooks attempts to continue beating them down, but Lung then slices one of their throats with a shard of glass in his mouth (and then spits the glass aside, wipes the blood off his cheek, and intimidate the other with a Bring It).
  • In Dune: Part One, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen does that to Dr. Yueh.
  • Elves (2017): When killing the Tropaholics Anonymous group late in the movie, the red-haired girl pulls out a red-and-white striped swiss army knife and slashes the old lady's throat.
  • For Your Eyes Only has Bond's ally Ferrara suffer this fate while Bond is busy fighting in an ice rink.
  • If you are watching a Friday the 13th film, there's a 75% chance of this happening to someone. It is one of Jason's favorite ways to kill people, though he tends to get more brutal with other means of killing.
  • The Funhouse Massacre: A lot of people get killed by having their throats slit open, since the attraction's been invaded by Serial Killers who's murders are mistaken for being part of the act.
  • Ghost Note: Ashley slits her own throat when she senses that Eugene Burn has woken up.
  • Happens in Ghost Ship as Katie Harwood is being forcibly dragged back to her cabin, and she witnesses someone get his throat slit with a straight razor by one of the crazed crew members.
  • Golden Swallow has the Chang Brothers' massacre in the hands of the legendary assassin, Silver Roc, the second who gets his throat slashed open and sent falling through a restaurant's top-floor window for good measure. Then again, the brothers were responsible for having a family of innocent farmers slaughtered over a land dispute just a day before.
  • In The Grand Budapest Hotel, Mr. Gustave's cellmates have a Sinister Shiv they call a "throat-slitter". They make use of it during their escape.
  • In the Halloween series, this seems to be Michael Myers' favorite method of killing. In Halloween Ends, Laurie Strode does this to Michael, but this isn't enough to keep him down.
  • Prince Li from The Heroic Ones, an expert spear-fighter whose weapon is double-sided, kills several enemies by running his blade through the jugulars. With more than one close-up focusing on the bleeding throats of mooks.
  • Kurgan in Highlander has his throat cut by Ramirez during their duel in Connor's home. Unfortunately, the cut wasn't deep enough, and though Kurgan bore a scar and had his voice ruined for the rest of his Immortal life, he survived to take Ramirez's head.
    • Earlier in the film, during the battle between the two clans, a priest kills a man slashing his throat from behind, then does the sign of the cross.
    • Mirrored with Duncan's own arch-nemesis, Kalas, in the TV series. Kalas has his throat slashed by Duncan during a fight in the 1920s. He survived but had his voice permanently ruined, (at the time Kalas was an opera singer) leaving him unable to sing again. He didn't take it well.
  • In Hostel Part II, this is how Lorna is finished off. Also, Josh in the first movie, but that one isn't nearly as graphic.
  • Hummingbird: As a young girl, Cristina killed the gymnastics coach who was sexually abusing her by slitting his throat.
  • In The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Wiress dies this way. Particularly creepy when you take into account nobody would have noticed except for the fact she was singing 'Hickory Dickory Dock' but fell silent.
  • In Mike Flanagan's Hush, the killer slits John's throat and clearly expects this trope to kick in... only to find himself fighting for his life against a victim who knows they're dying and might as well try to pull a Taking You with Me.
  • Done to a robot in I Am Mother. The woman throws herself onto Mother's back and cuts the hydraulic tubes of her neck, but the effect is only temporary, presumably because a robot could simply shut down the pumps to that area.
  • The Inglourious Basterds used this a few times. It's also speculated that Lt. Raine survived one of these, hence his scar.
  • Into the Grizzly Maze: While escaping from the Evil Poachers, Johnny Cadillac slashes the throat of one of them.
  • The Invitation (2022): Deville reveals that he's a vampire along with his guests after the butler Mr. Field casually slits the throat of a maid to serve them her blood. He later tells Evie he'd murdered her great-grandfather using this method as well.
  • John Wick: Chapter 2: The Bowery King has a massive scar on the right side of his neck from one of John's knives. He relates how John deliberately left him the Sadistic Choice of either holding the wound closed and surviving, or pursuing him and dying, mirroring what John did moments earlier to his pursuer Cassian (a knife in the aorta that he may survive if he goes to an ER instead of trying to follow John out of the subway car).
  • Big Daddy from Kick-Ass does this to a mook in the warehouse raid scene.
  • Kild TV: When Leland, the studio head, comes to look into what the crew are doing (they've been broadcasting for help and urging people to call the police to catch the killer they're trapped there with), the killer gets him stuck in the door, slits one of his arms, then his throat.
  • This happens to Reynald de Châtillon in Kingdom of Heaven, after being captured after the Battle of Hattin. Saladin offers Guy de Lusignan a cup of ice, indicating that he is sparing his life. When Reynald, who has gained notoriety by attacking caravans and killing Saladin's sister, gets handed the cup by Guy, Saladin states that the cup was not offered to him, then promptly kills him.
    • Truth in Television as well. This scene is true to the historical aftermath of the Battle of Hattin.
  • For a kaiju-sized version, the climax of Kong: Skull Island sees Kong slashing the lead Skullcrawler's throat with a boat propeller. It managed to defeat the Skullcrawler, but only for a few seconds.
  • Kruel: In the film's climax, Willie gets Jo's dad to back off and drop his weapon by holding a knife to Jo's throat. Even then, however, Willie decides to just slit Jo's throat anyway. Thankfully, Jo survives it.
  • L.A. Confidential: "The proof had his throat cut."
  • In The Man Who Came Back, Paxton kills the first of the vigilantes he finds following his escape by slitting the man's throat while he sleeps.
  • Mohawk: After being stabbed In the Back by Colonel Holt, Joshua's dying act is to slash Beal's throat with a razor as the scout bends over him.
  • In Murders in the Rue Morgue (1971), Morat murders those he blames for his disfigurement but pouring Hollywood Acid on their faces. The others he kills, who are merely in his way—like Vidocq's detective at the carousel and Jean who is guarding Madeline's door—he kills by slashing their throat.
  • Dean cuts his own throat in A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) remake due to Freddy's influence.
  • Nite Tales: The Movie: How all of Bloody Mary's victims are killed in "Storm".
  • Nutcracker Massacre: In a Flashback scene, after the 19-century German soldier has swallowed a gem and driven himself mad thinking he's The Nutcracker, he kidnaps two girls (one of whom he thinks is his Princess Clara, and the other the evil sister), and kills one of them by slashing her across the throat with a knife.
  • Old People: After Kim performs her Heroic Sacrifice to save Ella, the old people kill her by slitting her throat.
  • Once Upon a Time in China: The second movie's duel between Fei-Hung and General Nap-lan ends with Fei Hung slashing Nap-lan's throat. With a wooden splint. This somehow results in a fine spray of Pink Mist from Nap-lan's throat.
  • In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, one fellow who refuses to join Davy Jones's crew gets killed this way.
  • Dana Hadley in the first Puppet Master was killed this way by Blade.
  • Happens to some of the Repo Man's victims in Repo! The Genetic Opera. The film's first live-action kill starts off with a slashed throat that renders a woman unable to speak or breathe as the Repo Man takes the still-beating heart from her chest.
  • The Retreat (2021): Renee finishes off Gavin this way.
  • Riot Girls: Poor Fish is killed this way by a Titan.
  • One of the most iconic movie deaths ever is Clarence Boddicker's dataspike to the throat in RoboCop (1987).
  • Rogue (2020): When two jihadists have Tessa cornered in the shed and are advancing on her, Sam grabs on of them from behind and slashes his throat before stabbing the second one repeatedly in the neck.
  • A stoned camper gets his throat slit by The Jersey Devil in Satan's Playground, causing it to explode.
  • Shall We Play?: This is how Matt and his friends are murdered when Stacy gets revenge on them along with her dead great aunts.
  • The Silence (2019). In a world where people avoid noise which can draw the monsters, Hugh and Ally come across a dead couple with their throats slashed, and a note saying Shhhh pinned to their chests.
  • Splatter: Johnny Splatter can kill Krule by slashing her throat with a CD.
  • Superbad: In a Fantasy Sequence, Seth receives this fate via security guard while trying to purchase some vodka. This is the "fantasy/comic violent image" in the R-Rating label.
  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: Sweeney Todd's primary method of murdering his customers was slashing the throat.
    • For any who the throat didn't do it for, being dropped down a shaft headfirst would finish them off.
  • One of the organ traffickers in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is killed this way. His mother tells him not to remove the knife, but he does so anyway and ends up bleeding to death.
  • In Train, Gregor attempts to rape Alex while she is Strapped to an Operating Table. Alex manages to get hold of a scalpel and uses it to slash his throat.
  • V himself, in the V for Vendetta movie, just can't get enough of this.
  • The Chang Cheh movie Vengeance! (1970) climaxes with the protagonist finishing off the Big Bad this way after feigning death to draw him close.
    • Duel of the Ironfist, the Spiritual Successor of the aforementioned Vengeance!, shows loads and loads of faceless mooks getting their throats sliced throughout the movie. The Hero even lampshades this, by telling his protege during a fight scene that "Its easier to kill if you go for the throat"!
  • Angel of The Wild Bunch is killed quite graphically this way immediately before the final shootout of the movie.
  • Rather in an out-of-character manner, Wonder Woman does this to two security guards in Wonder Woman (2009) - by throwing her tiara, boomerang-like, at the unaware guards, who fall dead instantly as their throats are slashed.
  • X-Men: Apocalypse: Mystique gives one to Apocalypse, but the wound doesn't kill him because he has a Healing Factor.
  • How many Mooks meet their end in Logan. Hell, one of Laura's first onscreen kills has her turning a Transigen soldier's throat into a bloody PEZ dispenser.
  • A pretty bloody one is seen in Die Hard 2 (SWAT member who wasn't in on a secret) and Die Hard with a Vengeance (Bank security guard who was attacked by a female knife user).
  • In the first Lone Wolf and Cubnote  film, the last surviving Master of Death gets his throat slit and thinks on it poetically as he dies. See the page quote.
  • Apparently how Juno (Sylvia Sidney) died in Beetlejuice - not entirely obvious until she takes a drag off a cigarette. I think that's supposed to be a Tracheotomy hole, she died of throat cancer. All civil servents in the afterlife are stated to be suicides. Appererently smoking counts.
  • Near the start of S.W.A.T. (2003), Alex Montel cuts the throat of his uncle Martin Gascoigne for stealing from their crime organization.
  • In the final battle of Pacific Rim, Striker Eureka inflicts this on Slattern. It doesn't even notice the wound.
  • Several particularly bloody ones occur in The Wolfman (2010), when the titular Wolfman tears through peoples' throats with his long claws, to the point of tearing off his father's head.
  • In The Thing (1982), the Americans discover a frozen corpse in the remains of the Norwegian camp whose throat and wrists have been slashed. In the The Thing (2011), a deleted scene shows why and how it happened. He did it to himself when he was trapped in the room with a Thing.
  • Happens to one of the characters in Triangle. The slashing doesn't kill him straight away, and he ends up being stabbed repeatedly. He lives long enough to attempt to scrawl the name of his killer in his own blood, but dies partway through.
  • In Treasure Island (1990), the pirates' first morning on the eponymous island is a rough one as they find few of their number with their throats slit, courtesy of the local hermit Ben Gunn.
  • Majid's suicide in Caché. It's the fact that the death is self-inflicted that is shocking, as well as the apparent lack of motivation for doing so.
  • In Good Neighbors, Louise does this to Valérie with a straight razor. It does take a while. We do hear Valérie choking to death on her own blood. A reasonable (but large to Louise) amount of blood spurts out in jets from the severed arteries.
  • In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Voldemort does this to Severus Snape with his wand and orders Nagini to attack him further. Voldemort did this because he assumed Snape would be the master of the Elder Wand after he killed Dumbledore.
  • How all of the Ripper's victims (except Orville) are killed in Knife for the Ladies.
  • In Valentine, Shelley, the first girl to die, is done in by having her throat cut.
  • In Life Blood, Brooke kills Steve by slashing his throat with a boxcutter. She mentions that she wants his death to be slow and painful.
  • In Prom Night (2008), Lisa and Bobby both have their throats slashed by Fenton.
  • Done to a family in Sinister. It shows the mother and father being killed, but the video gets out of focus when the kid is about to suffer the same fate.
  • Mystery Road: All of the girls are murdered by having their throats slashed with a hunting knife.
  • In Whiteout, Mooney is killed by having his throat cut. When Carrie finds him at Vostok base, he is still trying to speak and blood is still gushing from the fresh wound.
  • Seven Psychopaths: The Quaker Psychopath, after stalking his daughter's murderer for years and driving him to suicide, does this to himself so that he could follow the man into hell. It's later revealed that the Quaker was Hans, and he didn't die, though he has a nasty scar to show for it.
  • The killer takes an agonizingly long time to cut Tony's throat with a cleaver in Vlog.
  • Saw: The chances of a character getting their throat slashed (among other Impromptu Tracheotomy variants) is just as common as them dying in a Death Trap. Specific examples include Tapp in the first movie, Xavier in Saw II, Jigsaw in Saw III and Erickson in Saw VInote , to name a few.
  • In The Gravedancers, Kira is murdered by the ghost slitting her throat, but she remains defiant to the end.
  • Fear, Inc.: At the 'wrap party', the head of Fear, Inc. slits Lindsey's throat will Joe watches.
  • In 68 Kill, Liza murders her sugar daddy Ken by sneaking up on him while he is masturbating and slashing his throat.
  • In The Night Comes for Us the Operator kills Alma with their own garotte by wrapping it around an air conditioner unit and kicking it out the window. Cue a good two or three minutes of choking and gagging, until the garotte slices through their carotid amid a shower of blood.
  • Razors: The Return of Jack the Ripper: In her dream in her first night in Hadley Hope, Ruth sees Jack the Ripper kill Sadie with a single slash across her throat.
  • Grim Prairie Tales: While shaving, Martin is compelled to cut his own throat with a straight razor. But was he forced to do so by the ghost of Colochez, or did he go mad and do it to himself?
  • Tragedy Girls: Mrs. Kent is killed by McKayla this way.
  • The Old Guard. Nile Freeman dies for the first time after an enemy insurgent she has just shot slashes her throat. Her squad-mates are shocked when they look at her neck and find that there's no trace of the wound.
  • The first kill of Stiletto happens when Raina slits Ernesto's throat from behind while he is in the sauna.
  • The Locals: After getting their car bogged, Grant and Paul approach a farmhouse to see if the farmer can tow them out. However, the wind up witnessing Bill murder his wife by cutting her throat.
  • Veteran Shaw Brothers badass David Chiang seem to do this a lot (he's the same guy from Vengeance! and Duel of the Ironfist above), in a later film The Young Rebel he kills a mob boss by slashing the throat with a shaving razor hidden in his shoe.
  • We Are the Night: Charlotte uses a piece of paper to cut a security guard's throat with one slice.
  • In The Theatre Bizarre: In "I Love You", Axel cuts his own throat after discovering that he has murdered Mo.
  • Scarred: Jonah Kandie kills his first on-screen victim in the movie by slicing her across the throat.
  • In The Ripper (1997), The Ripper kills one of the policemen guarding Inspector Hansen's flat by slitting his throat.
  • The Undertaker (1988):
    • Roscoe is revealed to have killed his first victim in the movie by slashing her throat, as revealed by the blood on her neck.
    • He's later shown actually doing this to one of the police detectives investigating him... with a knife.
