Equestria Girls: Sonic The Hedgehog

Equestria Girls: Sonic The Hedgehog is a My Little Pony: Equestria Girls/Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) crossover fanfic written by sonicfan05.

The fic is a retelling of the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie, but with the Equestria Girls replacing most of the human characters from the film (aside from Dr. Robotnik, Agent Stone, and Commander Walters).

Currently has a sequel adapting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022).

This series provides examples of:

    In General
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Celestia, Luna, and Cadance's human counterparts are revealed to have worked for GUN (the former as a commander and the latter two as agents) before they became principals/vice principals of CHS and Crystal Prep.
    • The human version of Bow Hothoof had been a part of the human world version of the Wonderbolts (stunt performers for air shows and a special secret air force squad for the military here).
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: While the organization, G.U.N., only shows up in the second original movie; the girls come into conflict with the organization in the first movie itself.
  • Adaptational Expansion:
    • Sunset's time spent after the events of the first movie is shown in more detail here.
    • Shining Armor's human counterpart is a police officer in this story. The sequel also shows that Zephyr Breeze's human counterpart is now a police cadet in training (a nod to his pony counterpart being part of the Royal Guard in "Sparkle's Seven").
    • Sunset's past as Celestia's apprentice is shown more in flashbacks in the second movie.
    • Discord's human counterpart is the janitor at Canterlot High that is an old friend of Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna who indulges in harmless chaotic pranks on the students and faculty and one of the few faculty members who was consistently nice to Sunset in the time period between the first movie and Rainbow Rocks.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While Spoiled Rich was an Abusive Parent to Diamond Tiara in Equestria. The human!Spoiled Rich continues to display more and more crueler and petty actions as time goes on. Word of God even states in one comment that she's only going to get worse.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • Diamond Tiara in Equestria Girls was so far shown to be a mean bully like her pony counterpart before her Hidden Depths were revealed much later. Here, she's shown to be on friendly terms with the CMCs and the heroes and even helped nurse Sonic back to health showing that somewhere along the line they have made up and are now friends.
    • While Discord's Equestrian counterpart was initially a lot more villainous and even after his redemption wasn't above pulling more shady actions such as the fake Grogar incident in season 9, his human counterpart here is generally a lot more friendly from the get-go, being one of the few people outside the Rainbooms who were consistently nice to Sunset in the time period between the first movie and Rainbow Rocks with his relationship with the Rainbooms being a lot less tense compared to his Equestrian counterpart's relationship with the Mane 6 (outside Fluttershy).
  • Affectionate Nickname: Like in the movie, Sonic gives all of his friends nicknames based on their personalities and habits. He calls Sunset; Equestrian Girl (cause she revealed that she's a pony from another world in one of their letters as pen pals), calls Twilight; Brainiac (due to her fondness for science), calls Rainbow Dash; Skittles (due to her rainbow hairstyle), calls Applejack; Cowboy Girl (due to her wearing a cowboy hat and having a country accent), calls Rarity; Fashion Queen (due to her talent for fashion), calls Fluttershy; Animal Girl (due to her love for animals), and calls Pinkie Pie; Cotton Candy Girl (due to her hair resembling cotton candy and having a very sweet personality).
    • He later reveals that he calls Principal Cadance "Crystal Lady", because he saw her wearing a lot of crystal jewelry near Canterlot City’s mall.
    • He also calls Shining Armor, "Donut Cop", because he talks to donuts when he's alone and eats them when they "step out of line", kinda like Tom Wachowski does in the movie.
    • He refers to Bon Bon as "Candy Queen", being much more openly friendly with her as opposed to being a Sitcom Arch-Nemesis to Lyra.
    • He refers to Apple Bloom as his "Apple Sister" as he sees her as family. A sentiment that Apple Bloom fondly reciprocates.
    • He is revealed to have made nicknames for multiple CHS students, including calling Derpy "Muffin Girl", Bulk Biceps "Muscle Man", Wallflower Blush "Plant Girl", Octavia "Violin Gal", Vinyl Scratch "DJ Gal", Photo Finish "Camera Girl", Sandalwood "Hippie Guy", Micro Chips "Nerd Guy", Flash Sentry "Guitar Dude", and Trixie "Trickster".
    • He also nicknames Princess Twilight "Princess Brainiac", since she is just like the Twilight he knows, but is a princess.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear why Principal Celestia didn't destroy the portal in the school that leads to Equestria like she did to all the others.
  • Animated Outtakes: Similar to the Equestria Girls films, Friendship Games and Legend of Everfree. The author made a chapter including a series of bloopers with the cast interacting with Jim Carrey.
  • Arch-Enemy: Robotnik is this to Sonic like in every iteration. Although here, he also serves as this to the Rainbooms, particularly to Sunset and Rainbow Dash. To Sunset, due to threatening to take over Equestria and turn it into his theme park; and to Rainbow Dash, due to supposedly killing her Honorary Uncle, Rainbow Blaze.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • The CMC in Equestria Girls don't have a lot main roles in the canon series aside from some cameos and one Day In The Limelight. Here, they play a major role in the series.
    • Diamond Tiara in Equestria Girls was primarily a background character with only one brief speaking role in the entire spin off with her pony counterpart also getting Demoted to Extra after season 5 of Friendship is Magic. Here, she is a supporting character in the series.
    • Lyra and Bon Bon are given some prominent displays on the spotlight when it comes to Sonic.
    • Dean Cadance and Shining Armor's only appearances on Equestria Girls were on Friendship Games with the latter only appearing for a couple minutes in the entire movie and both being forgotten after that (save for Dean Cadance being mentioned in Dance Magic to have taken over as Crystal Prep principal). Here, both play fairly significant supporting roles in the series as trusted adults for the Rainbooms to turn to.
    • Rainbow Dash's uncle, Rainbow Blaze, has only ever appeared in cameos in Friendship Is Magic. Here, he plays a major role in Rainbow Dash's development; being the one who taught her everything she knows and being her Honorary Uncle.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While the most kindhearted among the Rainbooms, Fluttershy isn't above calling someone out if she feels they act out of line such as with Robotnik over his callousness towards Sonic's Disney Death. Even her friends aren't safe from this, calling Rainbow Dash out on her initial cold attitude toward Sonic (even delivering a Dope Slap to her when Rainbow ends up driving Sonic away at the campfire) and chewing the CMC out offscreen for using her shelter animals to cause trouble in the senior's graduation party.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Pinkie Pie does this at random as she usually does.
  • Composite Character: This version of Grubber has both his canon version's mannerisms as well as being an evil, simple-minded assistant of Robotnik like Snively.
  • Crossover: This series is one between My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
  • Death by Adaptation: Here, the human world equivalents of Twilight and Shinning Armor's parents are long dead before the events of Friendship Games.
  • Evil Is Petty: Spoiled Rich displays this in both stories. She is shown to despise the Rainbooms for thwarting Filthy Rich's plans to turn Camp Everfree into a spa joint and the CMC for their "influence" on Diamond Tiara to the point of initially refusing to let them in her home until Cadance steps in, with everyone having to tie her up just to stop her from calling the authorities (which will alert GUN to their location). In the second movie, she makes life at CHS miserable for the Rainbooms and changes the senior graduation party into a boring lecture on business to spite them for what they did to her in the previous fic.
  • Expy: The cast of Equestria Girls replace the human characters from the movies:
    • Sunset and Rainbow Dash take Tom Wachowski's role as Sonic's best friends.
    • Lyra is the first person to discover Sonic's existence and makes it her mission to capture him so that people will stop calling her "Crazy Lyra" like how people mocked Crazy Carl.
    • Lightning Dust and the Washouts serve as the group of punks who confront the heroes when they find them sitting at their table.
    • The CMCs and Diamond Tiara serve as this to Jojo, being friendly children who gave Sonic his new shoes.
    • Spoiled Rich serves as one to Rachel who shows dislike to the heroes and faints when Sonic is uncovered and later wakes up to find she's been tied to a chair.
    • Shining Armor serves as one to Wade Whipple as the town police officer who is a close friend/ally of the heroes (Sonic and the Rainbooms).
    • Spike serves as this to Ozzie as the Team Pet for the humans that Sonic befriends.
  • Family of Choice: By the end of the first movie, Sonic is accepted by the Rainbooms as a part of their family with them even making a room for him in Twilight's attic filled with his belongings.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Spoiled Rich pretty much gets the short-end of the stick. Almost nothing goes her way. Not that she doesn't deserve it, considering her Jerkass behavior throughout the series.
  • Mythology Gag: Every chapter is filled with various references to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and episodes of Friendship is Magic, with them always being listed in the author's notes at the end.
  • The Nicknamer: Like in the movies, Sonic is this as per usual.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Both versions of Celestia serve as this to Sunset with Princess Celestia being the one who took her in as an orphan and Principal Celestia even being her legal guardian.
    • Shining Armor and Dean Cadance serve as this to Sci-Twi, due to Twilight Velvet and Night Light being killed when she was young.
    • By the time of the second movie, Sunset and Sci-Twi serve as this to Sonic, constantly being concerned about his tendencies to sneak out for his heroics and worrying about how to help him. Lampshaded a few times by Rainbow Dash.
Rainbow Dash: Sheesh, you two are acting like worried parents!
  • Precision F-Strike: Some of the characters from the Equestria Girls cast swear on a rare occassion. Apple Bloom, who is a minor, even once said "bullcrap".
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • Sci-Twi is biologically Dr. Robotnik's cousin.
    • Celestia (and by extension Luna) are Commander Walters' daughters here with Tempest Shadow also being his adopted daughter and their adopted sister.
  • Transplanted Character Fic: The author puts in characters from Friendship Is Magic that never showed up in Equestria Girls:
    • Lightning Dust is represented as a high school dropout who later formed her own group of delinquents, the Washouts, like she did in Friendship Is Magic.
    • Tempest Shadow and Grubber from the 2017 film are given human counterparts here, Tempest Shadow as a GUN agent familiar with Celestia, Luna, and Cadance and Commander Walters' adopted daughter and Grubber as one of Dr. Robotnik's henchmen.
    • Discord is the jokester janitor for Canterlot High who has an Intergenerational Friendship with the Rainbooms and ends up leading the graduation trip to Hoovaii when Celestia and Luna mysteriously go missing.
    • Spoiled Rich is still an Abusive Parent to Diamond Tiara and a Jerkass to everyone (especially the Rainbooms and the CMC) and being selected by the school board as the acting principal of Canterlot High when Celestia goes off the grid in the second movie.
    • Autumn Blaze is a quirky tour guide in Hoovaii with the Kirins being Japony (the Equestria Girls equivalent to Japan) immigrants.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about Rainbow Blaze due to how much of an impact he has in this story.

    Equestria Girls: Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Actor Allusion: Rainbow Dash's middle name is Ashley, referencing her voice actress Ashleigh Ball.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Here, Sci-Twi was actually adopted by Twilight Velvet and Night Light and isn't biologically related to Shinning Armor. She only finds out about this when Dr. Robotnik reveals it to her in Volume II, Chapter 7.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Grubber's mech is powered by the geodes of all the Rainbooms (minus Rainbow Dash's), giving his mech access to their powers.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: When Lyra tells everyone about the "Blue Devil", Rainbow Dash says there is no such thing; this is despite the fact that she and the rest of the Rainbooms have faced Sirens, a living plant monster, and have been sucked inside a magic mirror. Lyra even Lampshades this.
  • And Then What?: A heroic example occurs with Sunset where one of the biggest plot threads of the story has her finding herself struggling to figure out what to do with her life once graduation happens due to the idea that the rest of her friends will go their separate ways after that and feeling lost on what to do without them, especially since her status as not being native to the human world means she lacks the legal documentation for citizenship to apply to college or get a high paying job.
  • Artificial Limbs: Tempest Shadow has a cyborg arm.
  • Bar Brawl: Like in the movie, Sonic and co. get into a fight against a gang of delinquents (This time being Rainbow Dash's old rival; Lightning Dust and her gang called the Washouts). Forcing Sonic to use his speed to enter Bullet Time to tie everyone up and get his friends to safety.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Rainbow Dash hates being called "Skittles", with the reason being it brings back too many memories of her Honorary Uncle Rainbow Blaze (who was presumed dead in a Wonderbolts accident). She warms up to Sonic calling her that as the story goes on though.
    • Robotnik presses several when first meeting the Rainbooms such as:
      • Insulting her dresses is Rarity's
      • Insulting Fluttershy to near tears is Rainbow Dash's
      • Insulting her country heritage is Applejack's.
      • Animal cruelty is Fluttershy's.
  • Birds of a Feather: While they initially started off on the wrong foot, Sonic and Rainbow Dash opened up to each other and began to see how much alike the two of them are.
  • Bound and Gagged: What the heroes do to Spoiled Rich to keep her from causing any more trouble.
  • Brain Bleach: Twilight considers Robotnik's dancing to be this.
  • Broken Pedestal: Rainbow Dash, the girl who Sonic admired the most out of all the Rainbooms, becomes this for the extraterrestrial hedgehog due to how rude and hostile she is to him as Rainbow sees and blames Sonic for the government coming after her and her friends. It was only after a couple events that the two were able to bury the hatchet by explaining their troubled pasts of losing the ones they loved that caused to them have some scars that were tough to heal. It was from there the two find out how much alike they are and Sonic was able to see Rainbow Dash as the sister he never had.
  • The Bus Came Back: During Rainbow Dash and Sonic's chase with Dr. Robotnik, they end up running into various former antagonists from the previous Equestria Girls movies and specials (except for Principal Cinch and Wallflower Blush with the former showing up in The Stinger and the latter only being mentioned in Volume III, Chapter 3) such as the Dazzlings (who are trying to fix their tour bus after Robotnik's sticky bomb blows it up), Gloriosa Daisy (at Camp Everfree with Timber Spruce), Juniper Montage (who is back to working for Canter Zoom at Canterlot Movie Studio after the Rainbooms managed to put in a good word for her), Vignette Valencia (who is running another parade for an event in Equestria Land), and Post-Crush (who are back to touring again).
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Many people, including the Humane 7, call Robotnik a monster for all the atrocities he committed. Robotnik doesn't bat an eye for any of them, simply claiming that he has been called worse.
  • Damsel in Distress:
    • Once the heroes took care of Robotnik's tank, Twilight gets kidnapped by an Egg Robo.
    • The CMC, Cadence, and Diamond Tiara were all captured and used as leverage by Robotnik and Grubber for the Rainbooms to hand over their geodes.
    • Princess Twilight herself gets captured by Grubber's mech when he tricked into coming into the human world by getting his hands on Sunset's journal.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: After Rainbow Dash uses up all of her magic when doing the Sonic Rainboom to beat Sonic in a race, this leaves all the girls, including her, powerless without their magic since the geodes they use are connected together. This proved to be troublesome as they’re forced to run away from Tempest Shadow and were unable to properly defend against Robotnik's tank robot.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite how hostile Rainbow Dash was to Sonic, the Blue Blur was willinging to make peace with her and become friends.
  • Embarrassing Nickname:
    • Tempest Shadow hates being called "Fizzy" due to her real name being Fizzlepop Berrytwist. Robotnik, being The Sociopathic Troll that he is, gets a kick at calling her this.
    • The reason Rainbow Blaze calls Rainbow Dash, "skittles", is because when she was born the stubbles on her head reminded him of said candy. Sonic finds this cute, while Rainbow Dash finds it embarrassing.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Whenever the girl's geodes entered Grubber's mech, they glowed signifying their colour, the mech didn't glow when Rainbow gave her "geode", which Grubber and Robotnik didn't take notice of, letting her team-up with Sonic against the evil doctor.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Unlike with Tom in the movie, it took quite a while for Sonic to connect to the Rainbooms, especially Rainbow Dash, due to them being suspicious of him for following them for a long time. He slowly started to form strong bonds with them and later with Rainbow as well when the two of them exchanged stories on how they both lost someone they loved (Longclaw for Sonic and Rainbow Blaze for Rainbow Dash).
  • For the Evulz: Robotnik reveals to Tempest that he had Grubber trick her into thinking that she's now wanted by G.U.N. to not only prevent her from contacting Commander Walters for backup, but also to just screw with her.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Fluttershy spells it out to Rainbow Dash that while she understands the nickname Sonic called her brought back some bad memories, that is no excuse to treat Sonic so harshly; especially when all hedgehog wants is for a place to call his home.
  • Friend to All Children: Unlike with the Rainbooms, Sonic instantly forms a friendship with the CMCs.
  • Fugitive Arc: Similar to Tom in the original movie, the girls are on the run from the government to clear their names by seeking a person they can trust in the big city, while also helping Sonic find his rings so he can safely move to the Mushroom planet.
  • Gang of Bullies: While hanging out at Zappers, Sonic and the Rainbooms get confronted by Lightning Dust and the Washouts.
  • Get Out!: When Sonic calls Rainbow Dash; Skittles, the teen immediately opens the door to their van and tells Sonic to get out, much to the shock of everyone seeing Rainbow Dash being so hostile.
  • Good All Along: While initially assumed by the Rainbooms to be against them, Tempest Shadow turns out to have been on their side against Dr. Robotnik and covering up the past magic incidents from the public.
  • Groin Attack: During their struggle on the Eggmobile, Sunset delivers this to Robotnik.
  • Hero-Worshipper: During his early days on Earth alone, Sonic grew an admiration for Rainbow Dash on how she's brave enough to help those in need which later extended to the rest of the Humane 7.
  • Hollywood Hacking: The reason how Twilight knew about Robotnik before she and the Rainbooms met him at her house was due to one day hacking the government and finding about him in one of their files. Robotnik later reveals that he purposefully let himself out, hoping Twilight will learn about him.
  • Honorary True Companion: As Sonic was going to leave for the Mushroom planet, the CMC made a bracelet for Sonic and make him a member of the Canterlot Movie Club.
  • Honorary Uncle: Rainbow Blaze had this relationship with Rainbow Dash.
  • I Choose to Stay:
    • In addition to Sonic's moment of this from the movie, Sunset also chooses to stay on Earth in the end instead of going back to Equestria to rule it with Princess Twilight, considering potentially pursuing a career in education as a teacher for Canterlot High.
    • Sci-Twi also rejects an offer to go to an advanced science university and instead chooses another one where she opts to pursue a path in becoming a teacher rather than a scientist, with her and Sunset deciding to become dorm roommates in the college they applied to in order to pursue their aspirations for becoming teachers.
  • I'll Kill You!: Rainbow Dash yells this to Robotnik when he gleefully reveals he "killed" Rainbow Blaze, her beloved uncle.
  • It's Personal: While Rainbow Dash already hated Robotnik for tormenting her and her friends, what really made it personal is when Robotnik gleefully revealed that he had one of his drones shoot her Uncle Rainbow Blaze's plane out of the sky leading to his supposed "death". The revelation caused Rainbow Dash to give out a roar of rage and attempted to attack Robotnik, only for Grubber to use Scootaloo as a human shield.
  • It Runs in the Family: Apparently, the reason Celestia and Luna joined the military and later G.U.N. is due to it being a family tradition.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Lightning Dust gets a kick out of calling Rainbow Dash, "Skittles", as well as mocking the "death" of her Honorary Uncle, Rainbow Blaze.
    • Happens again, when Robotnik gleefully revealed to Rainbow Dash that it was he who shot down her uncle, Rainbow Blaze, down to his death.
  • Knew It All Along: Apparently, Twilight knew that Cadence is a former G.U.N. agent and the whole reason she convinced the girls for them to go to her place was so she can use her status as a former agent of G.U.N. to clear their names. Twilight found out about this at a very young age when she found Cadence taking off her armour with Cadence later making Twilight promise not to tell anyone about it.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Shining Armor was told about the pony world of Equestria, he says it sounds like something out of a girls tv show.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: More like "Let's You and Him Race". After having too many disagreements with each other, Sonic and Rainbow Dash decided to have a race to see which one of them is fastest of them all. Unfortunately, it draws the attention of Tempest Shadow who noticed it when Rainbow Dash unleashed her Sonic Rainboom resulting in all the girls' magic to be drained and left defenseless for a while.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Dr. Robotnik reveals to Sci-Twi, after running a DNA test, that he is her biological cousin.
  • Mama Bear: Celestia didn't at all appreciate G.U.N. showing up at her school and locking up her students like prisoners. So much, that she personally punched her way through their base to confront her father, Commander Walters.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Tempest Shadow's poor treatment of Grubber leads him to join forces with Dr. Robotnik against her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sunset has this when she unintentionally read Sonic's memories and learned about his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Never Found the Body: Rainbow Blaze was presumed killed in an airplane crash, though his whereabouts were never officially revealed with The Stinger revealing his true whereabouts.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, the CMC once snuck under Rarity's bed to sneak in on one of the Rainbooms' sleepovers.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • While generally the most level-headed and trying to stop Rainbow Dash and Rarity from beating up Robotnik when he presses their Berserk Button, Applejack tries to attack him herself when he presses her own Berserk Button to the point where the others have to restrain her.
    • When Sonic tries to convince the Rainbooms to let him hang out at Zappers for a bit, Sunset briefly goes into fangirl mode when he mentions one of Post-Crush's songs is playing before the other 6 Rainbooms snap her out of it.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Twilight comments on how the way Tempest treated Grubber was no better than how her former classmates back at Crystal Prep treated her.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The heroes get this when they noticed one of Robotnik's tanks is behind them.
    • Cadance, the CMCs, and Diamond Tiara get this when they found out that Spoiled Rich escaped her bounds.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Rainbow Dash's Nice Job Breaking It, Hero moment is constantly brought up, much to her dismay.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Rarity made disguises for the Rainbooms and Tempest in the form of trench coats and trench hats that are large enough to cover the upper part of their faces to avoid being recognized by the public and police.
  • Pregnant Badass: Cadance is pregnant with the human version of Flurry Heart during this fic's events, and still manages to get some badass moments against Robotnik.
  • Redemption Rejection: Averted. As Grubber was being arrested by the police, Tempest runs to him, hoping to make amends for have she treated him. While Grubber was skeptical about her redeeming him, Tempest promises to visit him at prison and bring him his favorite sponge cakes to which he accepted.
  • Saying Too Much: When Sonic calls Sunset out on leaving her friends behind and running away from her problems, Sunset then yells at Sonic that it's not the same as how Longclaw left him behind, only to cover her mouth as she realized too late that she gave away the fact that she knows about Sonic's past by reading his memories without his knowledge.
  • Sickeningly Sweet: Robotnik says he threw up in his mouth when Sonic says he was revived by The Power of Friendship.
  • So Proud of You: Princess Twilight had this reaction when she learned how much Sunset has matured and truly embraced the value of friendship.
  • The Stinger: There is one in the end where in addition to showing Tails arriving on Earth in a portal, Rainbow Blaze arrives with him, proving he is still alive though he is suffering amnesia, being unable to remember his previous life and only having a picture of a young Rainbow Dash as a reference for it.
  • Tagalong Kid: The CMC end up stowing away in the Rainbooms' tour bus due to wanting to go to Manehattan with them, forcing them to bring them too once they find out about it (after fleeing town) due to the GUN agents making it impossible for them to bring the CMC back home.
  • Take That!: One of the early parts of the fic has the Rainbooms criticize some of the faults of a video game franchise based on the Sonic the Hedgehog games. Even calling the game based on Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) to be the worst of them all.
  • Tears of Joy: Princess Twilight breaks into these when she sees how Sunset and Sonic consider each other as best friends.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: While trying to find the source of the blackout, it is shown that Robotnik and Tempest Shadow clearly dislike each other with a passion.
  • Tragic Keepsake: In their last conversation, Rainbow Blaze gave Rainbow Dash his necklace which served as his good luck charm before leaving on an emergency mission for the Wonderbolts. The necklace became Rainbow Dash's most prized possession as it served as a reminder of her beloved uncle.
  • Undead Tax Exemption: Sunset's status as this is deconstructed as her being from another world means she lacks the documentation needed to apply for colleges and high-paying jobs, which makes her more uneasy about her future after graduation from high school and initially wanting to go back to Equestria for good. This is taken care of though in the end once Agent Tempest Shadow and Principal Celestia manage to create legal documentation for Sunset to be considered an official US citizen, allowing her to apply for college and find a job.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Spoiled Rich tries calling the police to arrest the Rainbooms by giving away their location, which let Robotnik know where they are and hold Cadance and the kids hostage.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When the powered-up Rainbooms took down Grubber's mech, the villain sidekick wished to be spared to which the girls ignored and took him down.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Upon finding out who Sonic really is, Sunset was worried that the First Friend that she made at the beginning of her Redemption Quest was just a joke. However, she later learned that the friendship she had with Sonic was geunine with her proudly claiming the hedgehog to be her best friend.
  • Weirdness Magnet: According to Cadance and Tempest Shadow, the country has been experiencing various magical anomalies and phenomena way before Sunset showed up ever since G.U.N. spotted Starswirl the Bearded in their dimension.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Rainbow Dash explains to Sonic how she and Lightning Dust used to be friends until Lightning Dust got jealous when Rainbow Dash began to hang out with Fluttershy more.
  • Worth It: When Sweetie Belle brings up on how starting the brawl fight back at Zappers probably got them banned from ever entering the place ever again, Scootaloo claims it was totally worth it for the brawl fight.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Sunset tore Sonic and Rainbow Dash a new one when their race gave away their location to Tempest Shadow.
    • Sonic later gives one to Sunset when the Equestrian girl was going to leave her home, as well as all her friends behind as she is throwing away all the things that Sonic wanted for a long time.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Dr. Robotnik and Grubber have zero problem threatening to and actually letting the CMC and Diamond Tiara fall to their deaths.
    • The Agents sent to shut down Canterlot High and detain the students weren't very friendly either as some of them beat Lyra up to a pulp and promised to do even worse things if Bon Bon doesn't tell them about the secrets behind the Rainbooms' powers.
  • You Monster!: Fluttershy, of all people, angrily calls out Robotnik this when the Mad Scientist showed his callousness over Sonic's death.
  • You Remind Me of X: One of the reasons that Rainbow Dash initially disliked Sonic is due to how much he reminds her of her Honorary Uncle, Rainbow Blaze.
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: Even after the Rainbooms gave them their geodes (except Rainbow Dash who swapped hers with her uncle's identical-looking necklace), Robotnik and Grubber still proceed to drop the CMC, Dean Cadance, and Diamond Tiara to their deaths, under the excuse of technically letting go of them.

Equestria Girls: Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Actor Allusion: Sci-Twi's grandmother is named Tara, a nod to her voice actress Tara Strong.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Applejack learns from Apple Bloom that Sonic nicknamed Spoiled Rich "Devil Lady", she thinks it's very fitting for the rotten woman.
  • A Rare Sentence: Sonic claims that even though he unintentionally flooded the city of Seaddle at least he didn't accidently summon a Godzilla-sized water monster to flood the city on purpose.
    Apple Bloom: ...that's oddly specific,
  • Both Sides Have a Point: During a talk about the issues with Spoiled Rich making life at school miserable for them all, Apple Bloom says that sitting back and letting Vice Principle Luna try to deal with her never works out as Spoiled gets away with everything and taking radical action was the only way. However, Applejack tells her that Apple Bloom shouldn't get involved in that as she's only a kid and needs to be more responsible and think before she acts because her actions and choices affect everyone around her.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: While the Dazzlings, especially Adagio, were a bit skeptical of Cinch when the latter offered a team-up, they changed their minds when Cinch revealed she discovered a way for the Dazzlings to regain their powers back and get revenge on the Rainbooms; they were on board.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Cinch and the Dazzlings return as villains here.
    • Wallflower Blush also returns in Volume I, Chapter 7 after being the only Equestria Girls antagonist to be absent the previous story.
    • Twilight's old classmates from Crystal Prep, the Shadowbolts, have also returned to join the CHS's graduation ceremony.
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Sonic sneaks out to vist a grounded Apple Bloom but when he get's back home, Sunset and Twilight catch him.
  • Chewing the Scenery: Applejack when her hat gets ruined.
Applejack: Nooooooo! Mah poor hat! Bessie was far too young to be taken from this world! Why you cruel world!? Wwwwhhhhhhyyyyyyyy!?
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Rarity frowns in annoyance when Autumn Blaze playfully puts her arm around Applejack, and is shown to be annoyed when Applejack speaks positively about her.
  • Costume Evolution:
    • The Shadowbolts have switched to more casual clothing rather than their school uniforms, due to graduating in this story. They are shown here.
    • Wallflower Blush has also switched to a new outfit consisting of a white shirt with a brown vest over it, a blue skirt with images of plants in a planter with see-through black sheer, and grey heels, symbolizing her increased confidence after Forgotten Friendship. This outfit is shown here.
    • Princess Twilight switches to a more formal dress in her human form, due to having become the ruler of Equestria at this point (as shown at the end of season 9). This outfit is shown here.
  • Crush Blush: Sci-Twi/Sunset and Rarity/Applejack get these several times throughout the story.
  • Death Glare: The Rainbooms, Vice Principal Luna, Spoiled Rich, and all the seniors give this to the CMC after they caused a massive disaster in the school.
  • Dirty Coward: When the school ends up on fire thanks to the CMC's antics, Spoiled Rich (who is supposed to be the acting principal in Celestia's absence) immediately runs out without even trying to help the students to safety, outright stating "every man for himself" which Vice Principal Luna calls her out on.
  • Everyone Can See It:
    • Some of the other characters such as Rainbow Dash and Dean Cadance are aware of Sunset and Sci Twi having romantic feelings for each other by this point.
    • To a lesser extent, Rainbow Dash is shown to be aware that Rarity and Applejack also have romantic feelings for each other.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Diamond Tiara may dislike her mother's attitude towards her friends, she doesn't appreciate it when other people insult her. She still is her mother, afterall.
  • Eviler than Thou: More like "Scarier than Thou"; Twilight finds the nightmares of Robotnik revealing they are biological cousins to be much worse than her nightmares of Midnight Sparkle.
  • Evil Principal: Spoiled Rich takes over as principal at CHS and makes sure her students, especially the Rainbooms, CMC, and possibly her own daughter, are miserable. Sonic has even nicknamed her Devil Lady.
  • I Call It "Vera":
    • Much like her pony counterpart, Applejack names her hat, in this case, the name being Bessie.
    • It's implied Apple Bloom treats her bow the same way as well, even if she has multiple of them like Applejack claims.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Human Discord has this with Sunset and the rest of the Rainbooms, despite being an adult while they are teenagers.
  • Gamer Chick: Vice Principal Luna is revealed to be this when Sunset visits her and Celestia's house.
  • Get a Room!: Rainbow Dash says this to Rarity and Applejack in response to their Ship Tease moment in Volume I, Chapter 5 on Rarity's desire to make Applejack a new hat (after her old one was destroyed in the school fire).
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Everything was going well for the CMC's party plan...until their next phase involved unleashing animals onto the party which resulted in a fire that nearly burned down the whole school.
  • Just a Kid: Both Sonic and Apple Bloom are told this by Sunset and Applejack in regards to their actions (Sonic causing a city flood playing hero and the CMC causing a fire at CHS trying to throw a secret party) stating that while their intentions were good, they were also reckless and say they need to be more responsible in future.
  • Karma Houdini: Even after all the trouble she has caused, Spoiled Rich ends up getting off scott-free, much to the frustration of everyone, including the Rainbooms and the CMC.
  • Kick the Dog: After Rainbow Dash gives a Reason You Suck Speech to Spoiled Rich, the Evil Principal simply states that she's "glad" that Rainbow's uncle, Rainbow Blaze, left her as he won't have to see how "rowdy" his niece has gotten. Rainbow nearly attacks Spoiled Rich only for her friends to hold her back.
  • Language Barrier: Unlike the Kirin of Equestria who are unable to speak due to entering the Stream of Silence, the Kirin of the human world are unable to talk due to being unable to speak English. Autumn Blaze is the first one seen capable of speaking English, but hasn't spoken to another person in a while and wonders if she is pronouncing her words right.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Sonic, Spike, and the CMC all have this when they find Robotnik on their doorstep.
  • Motor Mouth: Like her Equestrian counterpart, Autumn Blaze is a non-stop chatterbox.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • The CMC's plan to liven up a boring senior party goes well... until they go too far by letting loose some animals that not only create chaos but also cause a fire, putting everyone in danger, including themselves. Thankfully, the Rainbooms get everyone to safety.
    • Sonic isn't much better, as like in the movie, he causes trouble trying to play hero.
  • Parental Abandonment: Like in Friendship Is Magic, Applejack and Apple Bloom's parents are dead. Alhough they die in a car crash when they went get medicine when Applejack got sick in this version.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: When the Rainbooms meet the human counterpart of Autumn Blaze, Rainbow Dash laments having to deal with another Pinkie Pie, while Pinkie says one more of her would be twice the fun. Princess Twilight, however, interjects that she's with Rainbow Dash as one Pinkie Pie is already enough; more than one will be too chaotic to even handle as she shudders from the past experience.
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": What's the password to Spoiled Rich's computer? Password. Wow, you really found a way to guard your confidential information.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: After the events of the first fic, Twlight's been suffering from nightmares of when Robotnik revealed to her that they are biologically related cousins in his evil lab.
  • The Prankster: Discord is this, much like his Equestrian counterpart.
  • Properly Paranoid: Despite Tempest's assurances, Grubber was right in pointing out that Robotnik is too smart and stubborn to stay put for long and sooner or later would escape from the Mushroom planet to make it back to Earth.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rainbow Dash gives a huge one to Spoiled Rich regarding her shitty behavior and how she's been treating them.
  • Ship Sinking: Sci-Twi broke up with Timber Spruce a month before this story's events due to no longer feeling the spark in their relationship.
  • Ship Tease: Sci-Twi/Sunset and Rarity/Applejack get this. Starlight/Sunburst also get this, if Princess Twilight's comments about them in Volume I Chapter 7 are of any indication. Flash Sentry also seems interested in speaking with Princess Twilight again.
  • Shout-Out: Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle watch the Owl Hut and Amphibiland series, respectively. Both shows being obvious references to The Owl House and Amphibianote .
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: While Sonic and Lyra are now on friendly terms with each other, Lyra still tries to capture the extraterrestrial hedgehog to win back her pride with all her methods usually ending in vain. They now have a relationship that's similar to the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.
    Lyra: I hate that hedgehog!
  • Stepford Smiler: Sci-Twi isn't exactly pleased when she finds out that her former classmates from Crystal Prep, the Shadowbolts, will also be joining her school's graduation ceremony. When asked if she is okay with this, Sci-Twi puts on a forced smile and says she is okay. Although, Sunset sees right through it despite her friend's assurances.
  • Tempting Fate: While the Rainbooms wondered where the CMC have disappeared to during Spoiled Rich's presentation, Applejack assured them that even those three wouldn't do anything crazy tonight. Well, they did something crazy all right.
  • Time Skip: Occurs 8 months after the previous story's events.
  • Who's on First?: When Diamond Tiara tries to tell the CMC that the password to Spoiled Rich's computer is "password", this exchange occurs:
Scootaloo: Great! then what's the code, over?
    Diamond Tiara: Password, over.
Scootaloo: Wait… is the password, over, over?
Diamond Tiara: No, it's password, over!
Scootaloo: But you just said over, over!
Diamond Tiara: Oh for crying out– it's password!
Apple Bloom: (taking the phone from Scootaloo) Ah’ll talk to her! Sorry about that, Diamond, ah know she can be a handful.
Diamond Tiara: Don’t worry about that Apple Bloom.
Apple Bloom: So what’s the password?
    Diamond Tiara: It’s password.
Apple Bloom: Yes, that’s what Ah said. What’s the password?
    Diamond Tiara: Password!
Apple Bloom: So…are ya gonna tell me or–
Diamond Tiara: It's Password! The password is password!
Apple Bloom: Wait, seriously? Well, why didn’t ya say so?
  • You Are Grounded!: The CMC ended up grounded for the summer for causing a massive fire to break out in school as detailed above.
    • Sonic's essentially grounded himself after flooding a city because of him playing heroics.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Almost all of the Rainbooms have this reaction when they find out that Zephyr Breeze, Fluttershy's younger brother, chose to become a cop as his new job. Rainbow Dash even says this trope word for word.
  • You're Not My Mother: While they spent their time fishing, Sunset admonishes Sonic for his reckless actions at Seaddle during their conversation on the boat which lead to Sonic yelling that she's not his mother similar to how he yelled at Tom that he's not his father in the movie. Sunset was hurt by not only the answer, but how much it reminded her of how she treated Princess Celestia during her time as her apprentice.
Young Sunset: You're supposed to be my mentor!...stop trying to act like my mom!
Sunset: (Thinking) Was this how she felt when I treated her that way? I was the worst!
