Tear Jerker / Equestria Girls: Sonic the Hedgehog

• Sunset's dilemma on struggling to figure out what to do with her life once graduation happens due to the possibility that the rest of her friends will go their separate ways after that and feeling lost on what to do without them, especially since her status as not being native to the human world means she lacks the legal documentation for citizenship to apply to college or get a high paying job.
  • The scene later in the first movie where she tells the rest of the Rainbooms (though she had already told Sci-Twi earlier at the camp), the CMC, and Sonic about moving back to Equestria after graduation and cutting off all contact with the human world by having Princess Twilight shut off the portal to avoid more magic leaking, the group is appropriately shocked and saddened by Sunset's decision. Sonic in particular takes it the hardest, with the ensuring argument he has with Sunset over it mirroring the one he has with Tom on his decision to leave Green Hills in the original film .
• Rainbow Dash's backstory on her Honorary Uncle Rainbow Blaze. To recap, he was part of the Wonderbolts (an air force/air show in the human world) alongside Bow Hothoof until Bow had gotten into an accident that injured him into retiring from as a pilot and taking a job at a warehouse with Blaze following suit out of loyalty to Bow. A few years later, they were called back to fight in one more mission that would potentially be life threatening for one of them with Blaze volunteering due to not wanting to put Rainbow Dash through the grief of potentially losing her father. However, he would since never come back from his last Wonderbolts mission and was deemed dead. Rainbow Dash still continues to hold out hope though that he isn't gone (as they Never Found the Body) and still holds on to her uncle's Tragic Keepsake necklace.
  • This becomes even more tragic when Robotnik reveals that he himself "killed" Rainbow Blaze by shooting down his plane due to the Ace Pilot trying to stop his plans with the Storm King. To twist the knife even further, the Mad Scientist even mocks Rainbow Dash over his death, which causes the Rainboom to roar in anger and attack him only to use Scootaloo as a human shield.
• Sonic's death. While it didn't stick like in the movie, the reactions of the Rainbooms when they thought they had lost a friend is tragic to say the least. Rainbow Dash was especially heartbroken as she was just now starting to get along with the hedgehog and felt like she lost her uncle Rainbow Blaze all over again as Sonic reminded her of him so much. The CMC and Diamond Tiara have also been reduced to tears, crying over the loss of their friend.
• Sci-Twi is pretty traumatized upon finding out that she is biologically related to Dr. Robotnik. By the time of the second movie, she is shown to be suffering various nightmares about it which are even worse than the ones she had as Midnight Sparkle.
• Even after reconciling with Princess Celestia in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Forgotten Friendship, Sunset still has pretty complicated feelings about her even by the time of the second movie due to a combination of still regretting how things ended between them right before she initially left for the human world and thinking she may have caused irreparable damage to her relationship with Celestia, not helped by Celestia not reaching out to her since then herself.
• The story of how the human versions of Pear Butter and Bright Mac passed away is pretty sad. Both had went out of town to get Applejack some medicine after she got sick from eating too many apple fritters and had been killed during the trip, causing Applejack to blame herself for some time for her parents' deaths.
• When reuniting with the Shadowbolts in Volume I Chapter 7 in the second movie, Sci-Twi is a bit uneasy around them and repressing expressing any resentment toward them, showing she still hasn't entirely forgiven them for how poorly they treated her when she was in Crystal Prep.
• The CMC becoming social pariahs among the CHS students in the second movie after they accidentally cause a school fire in their failed attempt to liven up Spoiled Rich's boring senior party, with only the Rainbooms forgiving and not holding resentment toward them for it.
• Sci-Twi's reunion with her former classmates, the Shadowbolts, isn't all sunshine and rainbows. While she puts on a fake smile, it's pretty clear early on that she hasn't forgotten the horrible times she had when dealing with them back at Crystal Prep.
