Light Yagami
- A God Am I: He wouldn't be Light Yagami without it.
- All Boys Want Bad Boys He's much more apathetic towards his and L's relationship early on, but as the story goes on, it becomes apparent he's much more fascinated with L when he's treating him like shit.
- Alone with the Psycho: Ends up alone with B. Although, possibly subverted, since Light's hardly a picture of mental stability himself.
- Ambition Is Evil
- Attention Whore: Especially towards L.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: He has somewhat of an obsession with clothes. It's often made fun of by other characters.
- Bad Boss: Tends to sack people for annoying him or for only doing their job (or when he's deprived of his coffee) and rejects a potential job applicant without even bothering to look at his resume to see if he's qualified for completely shallow reasons.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: With L.
- Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Stephen’s Betty and L’s Archie.
- Break the Haughty: Oh Boy.
- Broken Ace: "Tried to be perfect and broke himself in the process."
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Although he's perfectly charming when he wants to be, he occasionally blurts out remarkably blunt or rude statements. It's somewhat of a Running Gag that Kiyomi claims he's acting strangely because he has a headache.
- The Charmer: Naturally.
- Casting Couch: Apparently how he got quite a few of his 'promotions.'
- Cigarette of Anxiety: On occasion.
- Consummate Liar: This is Light Yagami we're talking about.
- Corrupt Politician: As much as he'd like to believe otherwise, at least at the start, he is undeniably corrupt.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Towards L.
- Cute and Psycho: B compares him to a vicious puppy.
- Deadpan Snarker. Very much so.
- Dating What Daddy Hates: Soichiro doesn't like L. At all.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Again, towards L.
- Even Evil Has Standards: He hates Matt, as well as his treatment of Naomi.
- Even the Guys Want Him: Light's sex appeal certainly doesn't stop at women.
- Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Lampshaded by B.
- First-Person Smartass: Practically the poster child for this trope.
- Functional Addict: Played With. He seems to be functional, but it’s implied that the drugs he took during his younger years played into his mental problems.
- Humiliation Conga: L has treated him really badly.
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Shows shades of this, and Word of God says he suffers from this.
- Love Martyr: To L.
- May–December Romance: Lampshaded with L.
- Really Gets Around: L says that he'd "sleep with a cabbage if it asked him nicely." And L's one to talk.
- Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: when no one comments when Light lights up a cigarette in a hospital room he takes that as "proof that the civilised world has laws for the masses and laws for me."
- Ship Tease: Has some with B. L even thinks they’re having an affair.
- Smoking Is Glamorous: Light repeatedly insists he isn't addicted to cigarettes. He only acknowledges the fact that it isn't just social toward the end of the story."...My doctor says I should stop smoking now."
- So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Light often finds the amount of attention he gets from both sexes annoying.
- Stepford Smiler: Especially after his Sanity Slippage
- Unreliable Narrator
- Uke: Both L and Near joke about him being this, although, at least in L’s case, he wasn’t being serious. Light is not amused.
- The Vamp: Uses this to get his way when all else fails. Definitely highlighted when it comes to Hishida and Shiori.
- Yandere: He spends a good portion of the story blatantly stalking L, who acts like he hates it, and then gets annoyed when he stops. It's not necessarily his default mode, though, and he's not quite on L's level.
'L' Larsen Lawliet
- Abhorrent Admirer: The politicians seem to think he's this for Light, and B is one for him.
- The Ace: He has a 100% success rate, until he loses one case later in the story. He’s very upset about it.
- Amoral Attorney
- Attention Whore
- Betty and Veronica: The Archie to Light’s Veronica and Stephen’s Betty.
- Broken Ace: "A writhing pile of parental issues and self-hatred."
- The Chess Master
- Closet Key: For B.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: “I don’t like it when people touch my things.”
- The Cynic
- Deadpan Snarker: Arguably the biggest one in the entire story. Which is REALLY saying something.
- Draco in Leather Pants: In universe example. B refuses to acknowledge that fact that L's not just tortured - he's rather abusive and has raped and beaten Light.Light: Ha! You have such a rosy little view of who he is, don't you? It's all Easter bunnies and sad eyes and inner torment with you.
- Freudian Excuse: He had a terrible relationship with his father, and was molested during his teenage years.
- Handsome Lech: Comes across as this on occasion.
- He Who Fights Monsters
- I Can Change My Beloved: With Light.
- Lady Macbeth: A male example.
- Living Emotional Crutch: To both B and Light. Light literally goes insane without him.

- Love Martyr: To Light.
- The Man Behind the Man: To Light. He’s killing his competition.
- Momma's Boy: At least, before his mother abandoned him.
- Morality Pet: Zigzagged with Light. he seems to be Light’s Morality Pet as well as his Evil Mentor and Light sometimes seems to be his Morality Pet.
- Pet Homosexual: Deconstructed. Many people see him this way despite his competence.
- Only Friend: To B, according to Word of God
- Really Gets Around: B calls him a 'manwhore'.
- Sweet Tooth: Of course.
- "Well Done, Son" Guy: Oh yes.
- Yandere: He’s just as bad, if not worse than Light.
'B' Benjamin
- Abhorrent Admirer: Towards L, who doesn’t seem to notice.
- Cloud Cuckoo Lander: In a way that is somewhat unsettling at times.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: He loathes Light.
- Driven to Suicide: Word of God says he attempted this to make sure L didn’t abandon him.
- Do Not Call Me "Paul": Unless your name is L, calling him 'Ben' will not end well.
- The Mentally Disturbed
- Moment Killer: He likes to do this whenever L and Light get alone time.
- Parental Neglect: According to Word of God
- Reluctant Psycho: He seems to be somewhat aware he has issues of his own.
- Stalker with a Crush: To L.
- Stalker without a Crush: To Light, due to his infatuation with L.
- Yandere: For L. He beats himself up to make Light look guilty, attempts suicide (prior to the events of the story) in order to emotionally blackmail L into staying with him, and generally acts like a little creep.
Kiyomi Takada
- Daddy's Little Villain: The daughter of a deceased famous and corrupt politician.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: More and more and the story goes on.
- Lady Macbeth: Attempts to be this for Light.
- Straw Feminist: At least, in Light's view, bearing Light's somewhat of a Straw Misogynist himself.
Stephen Gevanni
- Betty and Veronica: Betty to Light’s Veronica and L’s Archie.
- Dogged Nice Guy
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Light apparently forgot he was a trained FBI agent.

Naomi Misora/Jeevas/Mikami

- Love Martyr: To Jeevas.
- Nice Girl: Sadly, in this universe, bad things tend to happen to nice people.
- Stepford Smiler
Teru Mikami
- Butt-Monkey
- Stoners Are Funny
- The Scapegoat: When he's humiliated in a cocaine scandal, other politicians, including Light, of course, act extremely surprised.
Mail Jeevas
- Asshole Victim: No one is sorry when he dies.
- Cassandra Truth: He actually seems to be the only one who catches on, or at least vocalises, L and Light's somewhat close relationship. Of course, no one believes him.
- Jerkass
- Politically Incorrect Villain: Refers to Light as a ‘closet fag,' and generally like to use a number of derogatory slurs.
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Light.
- The Friend Nobody Likes
