Protagonists

    Katherine "Kate" Wilder
Voiced by: Jessie Buckley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kate_1.png

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Begs Jamie to save her from the vacuum trap, knowing Erin could die instead. She can also beg Jamie to save her from getting crushed by a glass wall if Jamie sends it towards her.
  • Betrayal by Inaction: If she and Jamie both survive the wall trap, Kate can then flee on the rooftop and leave Jamie to be killed by Du'Met.
  • Boom, Headshot!: A potential fate for her if she and Mark are the last ones alive and Mark accepted Du’Met’s deal.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Mentioned in an old magazine found in Little Hope.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death:
    • She gets a particularly nasty fate if the player doesn't accept Du'Met's Sadistic Choice, as she slowly and painfully dies from Hollywood Acid being injected into her body.
    • She can also be slowly crushed to death by a glass wall if the player chooses to have Jamie sacrifice her.
  • Damsel in Distress: Is this when she’s locked in the vacuum trap. If Jamie chooses to kill her over Erin, Kate can’t save herself and is instead saved by Mark who breaks her out of the trap. Can also be this in the wall trap if Jamie sends the wall towards Kate. Can further be this if she and Mark are the only survivors at the end, where she gets strapped to a table and can get her insides injected with acid depending on Mark’s decisions.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: If she and Mark are captured, she tells Mark to refuse Du'Met's deal, and Mark complies, Kate will tell Mark she "always loved him" before the two are killed.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The first playable character in the Dark Pictures games to be teased before her debut, thanks to the aforementioned Little Hope Easter Egg.
  • Final Girl: While Kate can die like the rest of the cast she can only die in one instance before the final chapter and if she reaches the final chapter she will always be the last one standing as every other character is directly attacked before her. This means that she always is the one to (seemingly) send Du'Met to his death be it alongside Mark or not.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: As per tradition of the past Dark Picture games, Kate's design is based off her actress Jessie Buckley.
  • Intrepid Reporter: She’s the presenter for Architects of Murder.
  • Killed Offscreen: If she and Mark are the last ones alive and Mark accepts Du’Met’s deal, he snipes the two off-screen.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Mark, if she doesn’t survive.
  • Love Interest: Is this to Mark.
  • Magic Tool: Has a pencil she can use to shade over torn bits of papers and find what's written underneath. Also has an amethyst crystal which helps her keep calm during Keep Calm! segments.
  • Meaningful Name: Kate means “pure”, which is fitting as she’s a reporter determined to find the truth and do the right thing.
  • Neck Snap: A potential fate for her if she fails to dodge Du’Met’s attacks on the boat.
  • Official Couple: Can be this with Mark if they reconcile and survive.
  • Official Kiss: Gives one to Mark if they get back together.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Mark broke up with her prior to the events of the game.
  • Plot Armor: Provided Kate survives the glass wall trap, she'll be immune from any and all danger until the climax. This includes her surviving being thrown from the roof through scaffolding, a fall that results in death whenever Jamie undergoes it. Justified however, in that it's likely Du'Met actively throws her in such a way that she won't land on a bar as he needs her to use as leverage over Mark in his preferred outcome.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Can have one with Mark depending on the player AND if she survives until the end.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: She’s the first one who wants to leave the island when things aren’t what they seem.
  • Squashed Flat: If Jamie sends the wall towards Kate, the latter will be crushed by it, unless Kate has the screwdriver.
  • Survivor Guilt: She feels responsible for the death of her friend, Shelby, whom she was supposed to meet the night Shelby was murdered by the Campus Strangler.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: She and Jamie can get trapped in a room where this happens.
  • Working with the Ex: The show she presents is filmed by her ex-boyfriend, Mark.

    Charles "Charlie" Lonnit
Voiced by: Paul Kaye
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/charlie_29.png

  • Accidental Murder: Him stepping off the pressure plate, whether by his own decision or by Du’Met cutting his nose, causes the Groundskeeper’s death. Charlie believes he’s responsible regardless of what was chosen. Subverted when you learn the groundskeeper in that scene is just an animatronic.
  • Affectionate Nickname: The other characters call him “Charlie”.
  • Bad Boss: Berates his employees and even underpays them (in Erin’s case). So much so that Jamie, Kate, and Mark consider leaving him due to his poor treatment of them and questionable business decisions.
  • Bound and Gagged: The others can tie him up if they distrust him and believe he’s in cahoots with Du’Met. This can get him killed as the others leave him unattended and vulnerable to Du’Met.
  • Control Freak: The other characters claim he’s controlling, uses them, and owns everything involving them. This can be played straight depending on player choice.
  • Cool Old Guy: Can be this when saving himself and others from traps and even when facing Du’Met.
  • Death by Irony: Him potentially dying in the furnace trap is fitting as he smokes and is generally hotheaded.
  • Elder Employee: He’s an old filmmaker with a staff composed of young adults.
  • Fingore: If he's not careful when the crew gets separated by a wall suddenly popping up in a hallway, he can have his hand crushed when he tries to hold it open.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Though they’re more co-workers than friends, the Lonnit crew see him as such as he can be downright mean to them. They don’t shy away from calling him out for his behavior, though.
  • Ground by Gears: A potential fate for him if he falls into the grinder and/or is spotted by Du’Met.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He’s an older, short-tempered man who mistreats his workers. He can either subvert or continue this trope depending on player choice.
  • Gutted Like a Fish: One of his potential deaths, if he is discovered in the warehouse. Du'Met literally butchers him, slicing him open and then hanging him on a meat hook to await processing with the other bodies.
  • Human Notepad: If he is tied up by the others and Du'Met finds and kills him, he will be found dead with his shirt ripped open and the word "COMPLICIT" carved into his chest. As he wasn't complicit in anything, clearly Du'Met is taunting the others calling them complicit in Charlie's death.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Can have this with any or all of the other protagonists.
  • It's All About Me: Played with. Du’Met claims he’s a borderline narcissist and Charlie can scold and even take credit for his team’s work.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he puts his job above others, especially his employees, he can express sympathy for them, depending on player choice.
  • The Leader: The founder and boss of the Lonnit film crew who decides where they go and what they do. Kate and The Curator even jokingly call him this at one point.
  • Magic Tool: Has a business card he can use to pry open latches on drawers.
  • Manchild: Kate and Jamie see him as this, as he’s easily angered when he doesn’t have his way and has outbursts almost identical to a child having a temper tantrum.
  • Man on Fire: A potential fate for him if he dies in the furnace trap.
  • Married to the Job: He’s passionate about his show and will do anything to save it from cancellation. Name-dropped when Mark asks him if he has any family or a spouse.
  • Mean Boss: Scolds his employees for the smallest mistakes and for voicing their opinions against him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Says this regardless if he stays on or steps off the plate that causes the presumed groundskeeper’s death, blaming himself when it was really Du’Met’s doing.
  • Nasal Trauma: Gets his nose cut by Du’Met if he stays on the pressure plate in the scythe trap.
  • Off with His Head!: A potential fate for him if he fails to dodge Du’Met’s attacks on the boat.
  • Only in It for the Money: All he cares about is finding content for his show so it doesn’t get cancelled.
  • Prima Donna Director: Played with. He’s the director of Architects of Murder and is passionate and driven, but only cares about finding content for his show, which can make him difficult and bad-tempered. Then again, how he acts is entirely up to the player.
  • Reused Character Design: His character model is the same as Sergeant Ferris in Man of Medan and Older Anthony in Little Hope.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: He’s an older man who can be unpleasant if things don’t go his way.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He’s prone to swearing when stressed, especially, in his words, when he goes too long without a smoke.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Wears dark red glasses and is the most knowledgeable of the crew.
  • Smoking Is Cool: According to him, as he’s a smoker himself and carries a lighter with him everywhere he goes.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Him accepting Du’Met’s offer causes him and his staff to be trapped on the island and hunted by Du’Met himself.
  • Wild Card: He’s the director and showrunner of the Architects of Murder television show, as well as owning the production company that makes it. The other four protagonists are his employees and are decades younger than him.

    Erin Keenan
Voiced by: Nikki Patel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erin_21.png

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Begs Jamie to save her from the vacuum trap, knowing Kate could die instead.
  • Alone with the Psycho: She gets trapped in a room with Du’Met, who can potentially kill her in that same room.
  • Asthma Peril: Erin is the smallest and youngest of the documentary crew, and her character's special survival mechanic involves knowing when to conserve or use her inhaler since her asthma is very severe. At one point in the game, she becomes trapped in an extremely dark and dusty room and drops it, triggering an attack during her Escape Sequence. A mysterious figure then approaches and holds the inhaler up to her, at which point the player can decide whether to take it or not.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She’s the youngest member of the crew.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Coughs up blood if she dies in the vacuum trap.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: One of her potential deaths is her coughing up blood and suffocating in a vacuum.
  • Damsel in Distress: Is this when she’s locked in a room with Du’Met and in the vacuum trap. Unlike the former, in which she can survive on her own, if Jamie chooses to kill her over Kate or does nothing, Erin will be completely helpless and die within seconds.
  • Dead Guy Puppet: If Du’Met kills her early in the game, the others will find her corpse, which Du’Met has turned into an animatronic.
  • Death by Irony: Her potential suffocation death in the vacuum trap is fitting as she has asthma and is generally unconfident.
  • Dies Wide Open: Some of her possible deaths involve this.
  • Disposable Intern: Kate and Mark believe Charlie sees her as this as he hasn’t paid in her weeks. Her character as a whole can be seen as disposable considering she’s a Sacrificial Lamb who’s one of the easiest characters to kill.
  • Elective Mute: As a child, she refused to speak. She even compares her muteness to Du’Met’s.
  • Eye Scream: One of her potential deaths is getting stabbed in the eye with a hypodermic needle by a mannequin.
  • Final Girl: Zigzagged, Erin fits the traditional girl next door final girl, however she is the first character able to die and has several more chances before Jamie, Kate and Mark even have their first. However, if Kate is killed before the final chapter, Erin takes her place as the person at Mark’s side in the final confrontation and like Kate, will be the last person standing on the boat.
  • Gay Guy Dies First: Erin is a potential love interest to Jamie, she can kiss her early on, and her first potential death is earlier than any of the other four protagonists.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: A potential fate for her if she fails to dodge Du’Met’s attacks on the boat.
  • Insecure Protagonist, Arrogant Antagonist: She has self-confidence issues, a stark contrast from the sadistic and scheming Du’Met.
  • Instant Death Stab: Du’Met can kill her by stabbing her in the jaw if she attacks him.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: Her first potential death is her getting locked in a room where, after the lights go out, Du’Met can kill her if she attacks him.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She's cute and feminine, and reciprocates Jamie's crush on her.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Jamie if she ends up dying.
  • Love Interest: Can be the love interest to Jamie, with the two sharing a kiss early in the game.
  • Magic Tool: Has a directional microphone she can use to hear through walls.
  • Nerdy Inhaler: Carries one of these as she has asthma.
  • New Meat: Erin is an intern at the film studio, unlike the other protagonists.
  • Nice Girl: According to Jessie Buckley, she’s the sweetest of the cast.
  • Official Couple: Can be this with Jamie if they’re mutual and survive.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She’s the shortest of the protagonists, but can still handle herself pretty well.
  • Plot Allergy: Her asthma and whether she uses her inhaler or not are part of the game’s major Bearings.
  • Sinister Suffocation: Dies this way in the vacuum trap if Jamie chooses to kill her over Kate or does nothing.

    Jamie Tiergan
Voiced by: Gloria Obianyo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jamie_80.png

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Played with. One of Jamie’s main traits is “antagonistic”. At a determinant point in the game, she can potentially kill Connie, a dog, to stop him from barking so he doesn’t give her location away to Du’Met. Then again, her personality is entirely up to the player and her killing Connie can be avoided entirely.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She has short, shaved hair.
  • Butch Lesbian: A brash, in-your-face woman who wears casual jeans and tees, and has a mutual crush on Erin.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She’s the most sarcastic of the crew and can display her sarcasm to literally everyone.
  • Defiant to the End: Can refuse to play Du’Met’s games by allowing herself to die in the wall trap. Compared to Kate, Jamie is less panicked and can die with her dignity intact.
  • Fiery Red Head: Has curly red hair and is stubborn and fiercely determined to save herself and potentially others from danger.
  • Final Girl: Is more prominent in the curators cut due to her increased screentime over Kate, but regardless of which cut the player plays she has the potential to be the last one standing. Like Kate, her deaths also don't start occurring until later into the game.
  • Hero Killer: Erin will die automatically if Jamie chooses to kill her over Kate in the vacuum trap. Kate will also die automatically if Jamie sends the wall towards her and Kate doesn’t have the screwdriver.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Jamie can perform this in the glass wall trap if she refuses to press the button. Zig-zagged in that her actual death depends on whether on not you had her keep the screwdriver, in which case she'll use it to shatter the glass moments before it crushes her.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: A potential fate for her if Kate refuses to save her or if Jamie fails to save herself from Du’Met.
  • Informed Loner: She’s sick of being alone and wants company. She can get it in the form of her co-workers, especially Erin.
  • In the Back: Du’Met literally can stab her in the back with a knife if she fails to outrun him.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Erin if she dies before the end.
  • Love Interest: Can be the love interest to Erin, with the two sharing a kiss early in the game and Jamie admitting she's been wanting to kiss her for a while.
  • Magic Tool: Has a multimeter she can use to rewire electrical circuits.
  • Official Couple: Can be this with Erin if they’re mutual and survive.
  • Pinned to the Wall: Can get her arm pinned to a wall with a knife by Du’Met if she fails to outrun him.
  • Preemptive Apology: Can give this to Kate or Erin if she decides to kill one of them to save the other in the vacuum trap. Can also give it to Kate if she sends the wall towards the latter.
  • Reused Character Design: Her character model is the same as Fliss in Man of Medan and the Gutian woman in House of Ashes.
  • Sadistic Choice: Du’Met gives her this by forcing her to kill either Erin or Kate in the vacuum trap. He can give her another one if she and Kate get caught in the wall trap.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: If she decides to not press the button and allow herself to be crushed, her last words are her telling Kate to survive. Kate however can die a number of possible ways afterwards.
  • The Snark Knight: Just about all of her dialogue is riddled with sarcastic comments towards just about everyone, including herself and Big Bad Du’met.
  • Squashed Flat: If Jamie refuses to push the button and doesn’t have the screwdriver, she will be crushed by a glass wall.
  • Techno Wizard: As the crew’s chief grip, Jamie can rewire electrical circuits and other technological devices.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: Her and Kate can get trapped in a room where this happens.

    Mark Nestor
Voiced by: Fehinti Balogun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mark_7.png

  • Big Damn Heroes: If Jamie chooses to kill Kate over Erin in the vacuum trap, he’ll save Kate by smashing the glass to her room after realizing it’s not airtight.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Coughs up blood if he refuses Du’Met’s deal, the former of which kills Mark by releasing a poisonous gas into the room Du’Met trapped him in.
  • Boom, Headshot!: A potential fate for him if he and Kate are the last ones alive and he accepted Du’Met’s deal.
  • Bound and Gagged: Not gagged, but he can be tied up by Du’Met if the latter catches him.
  • Camera Fiend: He’s the director of photography for Architects of Murder and his skill is taking photos of the crimes he uncovers in the hotel.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Kate claims he has this problem as Mark struggles to make important decisions. This may have contributed to their break-up.
  • Defiant to the End: Can refuse Du’Met’s deal, which gets him and Kate killed.
  • Final Boy: It always depends on choices, but seeing as Mark is the only character with plot armor until the end and always has a particularly active role in the final confrontation with Du'Met, the game certainly leans towards Mark fitting into this role.
  • Forced from Their Home: He and Kate lived together before they broke up. When they did, Mark moved out and found a temporary residence with a short-term lease until he could find a better place to stay. He hasn’t fully moved out as he asks Kate when the best time would be to retrieve the rest of his belongings.
  • Instant Sedation: Du’Met can kidnap him this way by knocking him out with a chloroform rag.
  • Killed Offscreen: If he and Kate are the last ones alive and he accepts Du’Met’s deal, the latter snipes the two off-screen.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Kate, if he doesn’t survive.
  • Love Interest: Is this to Kate.
  • Magic Tool: Has a camera he can use to collect evidence of the crimes within the hotel. He also has a stick he can use to reach items in high places.
  • Meaningful Name: His last name means “traveler”, which is accurate to his profession: traveling the world filming various locations and documenting on infamous serial killers.
  • Official Couple: Can be this with Kate if they reconcile and survive.
  • Official Kiss: Gives one to Kate if they get back together.
  • Offscreen Breakup: He broke up with Kate prior to the events of the game.
  • Plot Armor: Cannot die until the finale, in order to activate the lighthouse.
  • Primal Fear: He fears heights.
  • Pursue the Dream Job: He hates doing documentary work and strives to get his name out there as a photographer.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Can have one with Kate depending on the player AND if he survives until the end.
  • Reused Character Design: His character model is the same as Junior in Man of Medan, Young Vince in Little Hope, and Kurum in House of Ashes.
  • Sinister Suffocation: Via poison gas if he refuses Du’Met’s deal.
  • The Tease: He loves to playfully flirt with Kate if the player chooses to ship them.
  • Working with the Ex: The show he films is presented by his ex-girlfriend, Kate.

Antagonists

    Granthem Du’Met
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dumet.png

  • Abusive Parents: His mother, Lucinda, abused him as a child.
  • Ax-Crazy: He’s a sadistic and murderous serial killer whose main weapon is an axe. However, he’s not afraid of using other weapons, such as hooks and knives.
  • Axe Before Entering: Runs his axe through several doors while chasing and trying to kill the protagonists.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Obviously, in the worst endings where everybody dies, he gets away with his crimes. However, even in the Golden Ending, he manages to get away and continue his murder plots.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Zigzagged. Du'Met has a taxidermy workshop full of wildlife nailed to the wall and awaiting treatment. It isn't clear whether he was responsible for their deaths, but the image is certainly disturbing. On the other hand, he seems to have absolutely no interest in Connie the dog. Even when Connie attacks him, Du'Met merely shakes the dog off and resumes attacking his human quarry.
  • Body-Count Competition: He claims he wants to beat Holmes’ score of victims.
  • The Chessmaster: From manipulating the protagonists to luring them into specific traps of his design, he fits this trope.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: He forces survivors of his traps to lure other groups to his island in exchange for their survival. He kills them regardless if they agree to the deal or not.
  • Classical Music Is Cool: He plays classical music whenever he has people in a trap.
  • Coat, Hat, Mask: His killer outfit consists of these.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Played with. He’s a wealthy CEO of an architectural company by day and an elusive serial killer by night.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Not only does he have a hotel specifically built for him to trap unsuspecting victims in, but he also vigorously studies his prospective victims, figuring out their strengths and weaknesses to make it easier to manipulate them, which makes sense given he is a former FBI psychological profiler.
  • Determinator: He’s described as “an evil monster who is hellbent on becoming America’s deadliest serial killer”.
  • Eccentric Millionaire: Uses his wealth to build deadly contraptions to kill people with for his own amusement.
  • Elective Mute: Besides some occasional grunts, he doesn’t speak. Erin claims his muteness is so that he can segregate his normal and killer personas from each other.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Despite Du'Met being a horrendous Serial Killer and his mother being an Abusive Parent, it's implied that he still cared for her, at least enough to give her a Mercy Kill when she had lung cancer.
  • Executive Excess: Uses his image as a CEO to disguise his serial killer identity and also murders people who work for him.
  • Faking the Dead: As Hector Munday, he faked his death to escape investigation into his first few killings.
  • FBI Agent: Eventually revealed to be Agent Hector Munday.
  • Hero Killer: His traps can get all of the protagonists killed. If those fail, he can physically kill the protagonists himself.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: It's heavily implied that the true identity of Du'Met is Hector Munday, the FBI agent who arrested Manny Sherman and eventually became corrupted by his fascination with murder.
  • Implied Death Threat: Him making Laura say they treat their guests “like a real work of art” on the intercom may imply he enjoys killing his victims in “artistic” ways.
  • Jack the Ripoff: His attire, traps, and other methods of killing are heavily inspired by Holmes.
  • Kidnapped by an Ally: Pretended to be an ally to some of his victims before kidnapping and eventually killing them, as shown when he hired and gained the trust of the ill-fated contractors. This can also count towards the protagonists as he feigns wanting to help them save their show by inviting them to the island so they can get content. Though he doesn’t physically kidnap and bring them to the hotel, him luring them to and trapping them in it is technically kidnapping.
  • Kill It with Fire: Can kill Charlie this way if the latter fails to escape the furnace trap.
  • Kill Tally: Keeps track of how many people he kills so he can fulfill his dream of beating Holmes and becoming America’s deadliest serial killer.
  • Leave No Survivors: He intends this with anyone who enters his hotel, especially the protagonists as they can expose him if they escape.
  • Made of Iron: As the Lake ending reveals, he's pretty much invincible.
  • Matricide: He killed his mother, though it's implied that this particular murder was a Mercy Kill.
  • Mercy Kill: It's implied that he killed his mother so that she wouldn't have to suffer her lung cancer. It should also be noted that he did not include his mother's death in his kill count, suggesting that he did consider this death an act of compassion and not murder like his other kills.
  • Past Victim Showcase: Does this via mannequins.
  • Professional Killer: Shows off his skills in architecture and autonomy through his “killing rooms”, traps, and even the mannequins he cleverly places at the scenes of his murders.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: As stated above, when he’s not killing people with axes, he’s also doing it with knives.
  • Reclusive Artist: Jamie describes him as a recluse and he’s a Mad Artist who kidnaps and kills people in his spare time.
  • Reincarnation: Heavily implied to be one of H.H. Holmes. Even discounting the mask he wears, Du'Met looks incredibly similar to the famous serial killer, and the names "Herman Mudget" and "Henry Howard Holmes" can be seen crossed out right above Du'Met's former and current name on the list the Curator is tending to.
  • Reused Character Design: His character model is the same as John, James, and Joseph in Little Hope, Dar in House of Ashes, and H. H. Holmes in the prologue.
  • Sadist: And how, as if kidnapping and killing innocent people in the most brutal ways possible and expressing pleasure in it all weren’t enough to warrant this trope.
  • Serial Killer: He’s already killed many people before the events of the game and can directly or indirectly kill the protagonists.
  • Significant Anagram: His name is an anagram for "Herman Mudgett", H. H. Holmes' birth name.
  • The Sociopath: Has traits of this as he kidnaps and violently kills people with no remorse. Charlie even calls him this at one point.
  • Taxidermy Is Creepy: Taken to a new level. He uses his victims' remains to make his "art", animatronic mannequins.
  • Trap Master: Like Holmes, he created many deadly traps.
  • Tricked to Death: How he kills some of his victims and potentially the protagonists. Using noises, recordings, and even objects people need, he lures them into certain rooms then locks them in, leaving them to die by his traps or his own hands.
  • White Gloves: Wears these, presumably to avoid leaving fingerprints so he can’t be caught for his crimes.
  • White Shirt of Death: Wears a white collared shirt and has killed numerous people, including the protagonists, if they fail to escape him and/or his traps.
  • Would Harm a Senior: If his murder of his mother and possibly Charlie are anything to go by.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Du'Met wipes out entire families, children included. The Morello family had two little girls, only one of which is still alive when the crew arrives at the island. Jamie sees father and daughter flee together, but their bodies are discovered at the docks during the finale.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Like Manny, he killed several women in cold blood. This can include Erin, Jamie, and Kate.

    Henry Howard Holmes
Voiced by: John Dagleish

  • Greater-Scope Villain: His actions directly influenced Manny Sherman, who mentored the game’s true villain, Granthem Du’Met.
  • Historical Domain Character: H.H. Holmes was a real serial killer and conman who terrorized Chicago from 1891 to 1894.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: In real life, many of Holmes' exploits were heavily exaggerated or outright made up by the media. The "Murder Castle" was not specifically built with deathtraps in its design nor did Holmes use it to lure in victims. It is also highly debatable that he was even a serial killer at all, as his murders had clear and varying motives ranging from covering up botched abortions to insurance fraud. And he certainly did not kill 200 people. However, the game plays all of these claims straight.
  • Reused Character Design: His character model is the same as John, James, and Joseph in Little Hope and Dar in House of Ashes.
  • Serial Killer: He was America’s first serial killer who confessed to killing 27 people, though he was only convicted and sentenced for the murder of his accomplice and business partner, Benjamin Pitezel.
  • Trap Master: Legendary for his "Murder Castle", a hotel supposedly rigged with numerous elaborate traps to kill his victims. In the prologue, a trap door, sliding walls, and a gas chamber are all threats to his latest "guests", while the traps the protagonists of the main story face are allegedly recreations of his work.

Others

    Jeff
Voiced by: Edward Bluemel

    Marie
Voiced by: Kitty Archer

  • Decoy Protagonist: She and Jeff are the protagonists in the prologue, where they are ultimately murdered by Holmes.
  • Happily Married: She and Jeff have just married and are loving towards each other.
  • Reused Character Design: Her character model is the same as Julia in Man of Medan.
  • Sinister Suffocation: Via drowning if she doesn’t investigate and stays in the bathtub.
  • Spirited Young Lady: Marie is a bold and adventurous young lady, eager to experience excitement and thrills. Attending the World's Fair seems to be her idea, with Jeff less eager about their upcoming adventure.
  • Slashed Throat: Holmes does this to her if she decides to investigate. She soon bleeds to death from her wounds.

    KD Cooper General Contractors

  • Ankle Drag: An unknown worker's fate, dragged into a vent.
  • Asshole Victim: Ryan Hart. While in the sawblade trap with Monica Hart, with whom he is somehow related, he yells at her to shut up for being justifiably terrified.
  • Caught on Tape: Du'Met recorded their sounds of pain and horror as they died, and plays them back as the crew explores the spa.
  • Chainsaw Good: Du’Met killed Monica this way after placing her and Ryan in the sawblade trap.
  • Conversation Casualty: Laura was murdered while begging Du’Met to release her.
  • Half the Woman She Used to Be: Monica's fate, as she was put in a tug-of-war sawblade trap with Ryan and lost.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: As revealed in the Grand Opening Invitation secret, Du’Met covered up their deaths by making it look like they died in a lake accident.
  • Not the First Victim: Inverted. They were Du'Met's first kills after faking his death as Hector Munday.
  • Uncertain Doom: It is unclear what happened to Ryan Hart.

    Joseph Morello
Voiced by: Abdul Salis

  • Early-Bird Cameo: His first book, The Mind of a Killer, is in Rachel's desk in House of Ashes.
  • Family Extermination: He, his wife, his brother, and his two daughters were invited to the hotel by Du'Met. They didn't make it out.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: He is coerced into playing the role of Du'Met to lure the protagonists to the island, otherwise his one surviving daughter will be killed.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Writes all about serial killers.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His eldest daughter, wife, and brother are already dead by the time the main cast arrive on the island; however, his younger daughter is still alive and being held hostage by Du'Met in order to ensure Morello's cooperation. And in the end, Du'Met murders them both rather than free them like he (presumably) promised.
  • Reused Character Design: He shares his model with brothers Alex and Brad from Man of Medan and with Nick from House of Ashes.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Jamie can catch sight of him hurriedly attempting to leave the island with his daughter.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once he lures the protagonists to Du'Met's island, he is murdered by Du'Met when he tries to escape.

    Groundskeeper
Voiced by: Mike Bodie

  • Actually a Doombot: The protagonists later find out the groundskeeper was Du'Met in disguise and the "person" they saw killed was in reality a very elaborate mannequin. Du'Met made a show of "killing" the groundskeeper just to scare them.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Begs Charlie and Jamie to save him from his trap, despite not knowing them and not even able to see them.
  • Bound and Gagged: Not gagged, but he is tied to a chair when Charlie and Jamie find him.
  • Doomed by Canon: Regardless of player choice, he’ll always be stabbed by the scythe trap.
  • The Faceless: There's a bag over his head.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Some scythe-like contraption is driven into him.

     Connie

  • Angry Guard Dog: Charlie or Mark can encounter Connie growling and barking at them, acting like a stereotypical vicious dog. How the player treats him decides if he shows his softer side or not.
  • Big Friendly Dog: A blocky-headed, muscular Pitbull discovered on the island that characters can befriend.
  • Heroic Dog: If rescued, Connie will help fight Du'Met.
  • Not Worth Killing: Connie has previously survived Du'Met wiping out the Morello family, living alone on the island until discovered by the crew. This might have been simple luck, were it not notable that Du'Met will not hurt the dog even after being bitten.
  • Shoot the Dog: When cornered and hiding from the killer, the player is given the option of killing the dog to silence his growling.
  • Sole Survivor:
    • Connie belonged to the ill-fated Morello family, previous victims lured to the island. He survived alone, until discovered and (possibly) rescued by the crew.
    • In the secret "Dog" Ending, where everyone but the dog are killed.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential:
    • The player has the option to throw a rock at the dog, chasing him off instead of befriending him.
    • The player is given the choice to kill or spare Connie, during a Quick Time Event. The Curator will even comment on the player's cruel actions, if they managed to get everyone including the dog killed.
