Fridge Horror

  • In some scenes of the game where certain characters may be about to die, the Curator can be found watching from the shadows. An easy example: If you look closely in the mirror when Marie is getting ready for her bath, you can see the Curator lurking behind her. (Some may mistake him for Holmes, since they both wear bowler hats, but the Curator has distinctive ears and no mustache.) That begs the question - what is he doing there?
  • In the room where Jamie is trapped behind the glass wall, the button to move the wall clearly does not require much force to press. Jamie also stands directly in front of the button, even when potentially being crushed. Though the wall trap deactivates once Jamie is crushed, what if she had accidentally pressed the button while being crushed? Could the trap have potentially killed both of them?

Fridge Brilliance
  • Granthem Du'met is an anagram of Herman Mudgett, H H Holmes' real name.
  • Du'Met's actions often seem largely inconsistent, with many pointing to the scene where he gives Erin her inhaler instead of outright killing her, or how Mark is captured instead of killed if he is caught in Du'Met's workshop. His actions become a lot more consistent when viewing him as a game maker. Du'Met, despite his imposing presence, much prefers to psychologically torture his subjects. Giving Erin her inhaler? Du'Met wants to make sure Erin survives long enough to find the recordings and sow distrust with the rest of the group. Killing her when he gets stabbed can be chalked up to rage or self-defense. In fact, every time when a character can die from Du'Met directly, it's because they broke the rules. Du'Met thinks Charlie died in the incinerator trap, so has no issue leaving him to his death in the crusher. Jamie and Kate find his control room and take over? Absolutely not, let's kill Jamie. Escaping the house is the ultimate violation of the rules, after which all bets are off and he will kill without hesitation. Even then, he's not a mindless killer, as he'll still use tricks (posing as a statue, dressing as Mark) to catch his victims off guard.
  • Mark's nearly impenetrable plot armor (he can't die until the final chapter) is explained by the fact that Du'Met picked him at the very beginning to be the "ferryman" or the person that convinces the next group to come to the island. The plan was for Mark to be stuck in a cage for most of the game, only foiled by the fact that the slide into said cage breaks beforehand. In the entire game, there's only one death in which Du'Met isn't directly involved (Charlie falling off the log), and as Du'Met had no intention to kill Mark until he escaped the island (Lake ending) or became the ferry man (Ultimatum ending), it makes sense that Mark manages to stay alive much easier than everyone else.
    • While Du'Met didn't ultimately mind if Kate died early due to stumbling her way into a trap (which does happen twice), once she survives the glass trap, she will not die no matter what until she reaches the others. In two instances Kate can find herself in situations that are lethal when Jamie is placed in them, the first being falling off the roof which results in impalement for Jamie while Kate misses all sharp objects, the second instance is in the cabin, where he will axe Jamie through the head if given the chance but will axe a can of soup if Kate is the only one present. This all makes sense in the Ultimatum ending, as seen previously Joseph Morello wasn't the only one left after his stay, his daughter was still alive with him. It's likely Kate was intended to play a similar role to Morello's daughter being used as leverage against Mark to get him to lure the next group to the house, he even kills them as they try to leave just like he did to Morello and his daughter. With this in mind, Kate's plot armor when in moments where Du'Met can directly kill her makes a lot more sense as he actually wants her to survive. This also makes sense of why he doesn't bother trying to trick Jamie like he does when Kate is the last one left aside from Mark, he doesn't think Jamie is strong enough leverage.
