These are the public personas presented by the members in their appearances.

For consistency, all Japanese names are written in the traditional order.

1st Generation and 3rd Draft

The first generation members joined the group on March 31, 2017. The 3rd Draft members were selected by representatives of the current members from the participants of the 3rd AKB48 Group Draft Conference, a joint recruitment event for all the Japan-based 48 groups, in January 2018.

Fukuda Akari

"The demons are out, and Fukuda (fuku = luck) is... Setouchi (uchi = in)!" (a play on the traditional chant of Setsubun festival)

Deputy captain of the group since January 2020. Leader of the subunit Katte ni! Shikoku Kanko Taishi. Plays the keyboard in Aoi Himawari.

• The Smart Girl: She takes the top spot in the group's academic test in Imousu TV Season 5.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Claims to eat udon three times a day in her personal greeting.

Hyodo Aoi

"Setouchi's sky is... Aoi (blue)! The sea is... Aoi! Hyodo... Aoi!"

Leader and bassist of Aoi Himawari.

• Lead Bassist: She's Aoi Himawari's leader and bassist (she also plays the piano). The band's name (青い向日葵, Blue Sunflowers) also happens to have the word "Aoi" (青, blue) and an Alternate Character Reading of her name's kanji (葵, hollyhock) in "Himawari".

Imamura Mitsuki

"Nice to Michu!"

Second captain of the group since January 2020. Also leader of STUDIO. Plays the guitar in Aoi Himawari.

• Dressed Like a Dominatrix: She occasionally plays with whips and other BDSM instruments in her live streams.
• Punny Name: Her nickname is Michu, so she greets people in English with "Nice to Michu!" and says goodnight with "Oyasumichu!"
• The Smart Girl: She is the runner-up in the group's academic test in Imousu TV Season 5. As mentioned above, her vice-captain Fukuda Akari is the top.
• Supporting Leader: As the captain, she tends to let other members take the spotlight as she considers herself a Jack of All Trades with no particular special skill.
• Team Mom: She's the group's captain.

Ishida Chiho

"Setouchi... Chiho! Setouchi smile delivered-ken (Hiroshima dialect) to you!"

Leader of Charming Trip and the first STU original member to do a solo concert.

• Accent Interest: She's often asked to represent the Hiroshima dialect, although she usually speaks in standard Japanese.
• Ascended Extra: It's often noted that she started out in the third row of their early choreography, and steadily made her way to the front until she became the center for the sixth single in 2021.
• Catchphrase: "Ie-!", which is like "Yay!" cut short.
• Country Mouse: She describes her hometown (Kumano, Hiroshima Prefecture) as the "mountainous part of Hiroshima".
• Covert Pervert: Has revealed on AKBingo! that she likes to feel up other girls' butts.
• The Faceless: In the beginning of her 2020 solo concert, the audience wear masks of her face and the real her appears from between them.
• Fanservice: She released a photobook in December 2020 which includes the first bikini and lingerie shots of an original member of the group.
• The Fashionista: She's the leader of Charming Trip, the group's beauty and fashion subunit, and aims to attract female fans through beauty-related activities.^* Her hometown also happens to specialize in producing brushes, known as Kumano-fude, including makeup brushes.
• Punny Name: Her greeting catchphrase includes a wordplay with Setouchi Chihō (Setouchi Region, with a long o).
• Ridiculously Cute Critter: Often showed off her pet hamster, Maru, until it passed away in August 2020.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate mint, which she incorporates into her goodnight phrase, "Oyasuminto!" Also tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, which as far as she's concerned is just "okonomiyaki" since it's the original version (for her), unlike Kansai-style okonomiyaki.
• What Beautiful Eyes!: Her photos usually focus on her brown eyes. Many of her Showroom followers claim that the way she stares into the camera sucks their souls right out.

Iwata Hina

"Everyone, do you like-naso (Yamaguchi dialect) Hina? Hina like-naso you too!"

• Accent Interest: She often speaks in Yamaguchi accent, which is relatively underrepresented in Japanese media, including in her personal greeting.
• Animal Motif: Her given name is a homophone for "chick" (as in baby bird), so her nickname is Hinapiyo, where "piyo" is the Japanese onomatopoeia for bird chirping.
• Determinator: In Setobingo episode 10, she reveals that she has participated in many idol group auditions before being admitted into STU, including the AKB Group Draft. The STU audition was her fifth.
• Fille Fatale: She's adept at winning fans' hearts and loyalty in handshake events and live streams, or a "fisher" in idol parlance.
• Girly Girl: She's a straight embodiment of the archetypal idol and is often described as "The Idol".
• Sweet Baker: In STU Imousu season 5, she carries out the challenge of opening her own food truck bakery for one day after baking her own bread and harvesting her own honey (despite her fear of insects).

Kai Kokoa

"Who's STU48's No. 1 Hot-Blooded girl? Kokoa!" (also a play on "hot cocoa")

• The Baby of the Bunch: She's not the youngest founding member (that would be Morishita Maiha), but her baby face and Genki Girl personality make her this. She used to casually call Okada Nana "Naachan", and Naachan was dejected when she started calling her with the formal "Nana-san" like everybody else to sound more grown up.
• Boyish Short Hair: Her trademark hairstyle.
• Celebrity Impersonator: Her special skill is impersonating Hiroshima Toyo Carp players.
• Passionate Sports Girl: She's a huge fan of Hiroshima Toyo Carp. She often posts pictures wearing various Carp merch and occasionally even wears them over her STU uniform. Her preferred lightstick color is the baseball club's red for both sticks. The club took notice and she got a supporting role in a Hiroshima local TV series about their fandom. She has also thrown a ceremonial first pitch for them.
• Punny Name: Her morning Showroom live stream is titled in English, Morning Cocoa. Her custom Carp jersey uses the same spelling.

Mineyoshi Arisa

"Are there (ari) Ari-chan supporters here? Arisa-go... set sail!"

• The Fashionista: She set up her own fashion brand, Arisa Company, in February 2021.
• Metalhead: She covered BABYMETAL's "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" in the third AKB Group No. 1 Singer Contest final rounds, with a live band.

Nakamura Mai

"[in English] Question! [in Japanese] Who has descended on (maiorita) Setouchi? Thank-Q!"

• Ballet: She's the group's resident ballerina.
• Gratuitous English: Her catchphrase is "Question!"

Oki Yuka

"Your No. 1 favorite (oki-ni-iri) in STU48 is... Oki-chan!"

• Bookworm: She loves to read and writes novels on her phone, and aspires to publish a novel someday. She claims to have written around thirty stories since middle school, some of which she used to publish online.
• Gratuitous English: She says "compliance" a lot.
• In-Series Nickname: She sometimes uses the nickname Konpurapo (コンプラぽ), based on "compliance" in katakana.
• Ms. Fanservice: A mild one, she likes to show some skin or "accidentally" invoke Male Gaze in her social media. She claims the management often censors her messages to fans, which lead her to ironically adopt the Catchphrase "adhere to compliance", while still doing her best to show skin or share details about her Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with Nakamura Mai.
  • She once shared a story about when she was laying naked on her bed because her room was hot and had to explain to Mai, who walked in on her, that it was not what it seemed like.
  • Her SHOWROOM account was suspended for a few hours in January 2021 after she did a live stream in the bathtub.^* She was fully clothed and had done the same thing before with no problem, but her manager informed her that it's no longer okay.
• Punny Name: She's everyone's number one favorite (お気に入り okini-iri).

Takino Yumiko

"Yumirin energy charge, complete!"

Center of the first five main singles. Plays the saxophone in Aoi Himawari.

• The Ace: She's the group's first center performer and resident saxophonist,^*  (she has played since middle school and went to an unnamed music university in Hiroshima, most probably the Elisabeth University of Music) and represented the group in AKB's main singles, which lineups customarily include the aces of sister groups (Okada Nana usually also appears as one of AKB's aces). She's also a model and the first member to get signed to a talent agency (Mama&Son) in 2020.
• Fangirl: Of Hiroshima Toyo Carp, trains, and Okada Nana. She has plenty of merch, which she shows off on social media.
• Heroes Love Dogs: Her Twitter name is a combination of her and her dog's name, Anko. Anko sometimes appears in her posts, and many fans think they look alike. Anko would also appear in her photobook.
• Hopeless Suitor: She often expresses her desire to take Okada Nana away from AKB's Murayama Yuiri and proclaims herself Naachan's "Setouchi wife". While Naachan is also fond of her, it's nothing compared to her bond with Yuirii. Despite this, Yumirin maintains a cordial relationship with Yuirii, and fans sometimes refer to them as YumiRingo.
  • She cried Tears of Joy and did a Happy Dance on camera when Naachan agreed to form a unit with her for the Janken Tournament in 2018, and asked her overseas fans to translate her story to their own languages about how Naachan had remembered the promise she made the year before to wait for Yumirin's invitation that year.
    Yumirin: I want this story told in English, in Chinese, in Korean, in Indonesian, the whole world should hear about this... and also Thai... Nana-san is just too wonderful. Really, the whole world should cry [in happiness]. (switches to Engrish) Oru... warudo... cry...
  • After Naachan and Yuiri kissed during a live performance of "Oshimeshi" in 2018, it became a hot topic among members for a while (although the kiss is part of the choreography, people took it as confirmation of their Official Couple status) and everybody was excited about it... except Yumirin. She was devastated.
  • In January 2020, YuuNaa kissed onstage again several times and had a skit about them getting married during their duo concert, and an STU radio program offered their sympathy to Yumirin on Twitter. She still bought the concert merch, though.
  • When Imamura Mitsuki was asked in an ANN radio broadcast whom she would save if Naachan and AKB's Mukaichi Mion were drowning...
    Michu: I would save Miion-san. I think Nana-san would be able to save herself, and even if she couldn't, Takino Yumiko-san would be the first to jump to her rescue.
  • During Naachan's 2018 birthday stage, she was off-stage and the other members were confessing things they couldn't say in front of her. Yumirin confessed that the backstage stairs had Naachan's lingering scent and she deliberately breathed it in while climbing the stairs, and asked the audience not to tell her and creep her out. Of course, Naachan had been listening from backstage the whole time and quickly came to scold her.
  • In early 2020, she wrote a tweet claiming to be a Nagoya resident who is a fan of Johnny's talent Yokohara Yuki and ships Naachan and herself, which seemed to be intended for her personal, anonymous Twitter account... but mistakenly posted it to her official one. She apologized profusely on her mobame (subscriber-only mobile blog) and SHOWROOM, but fortunately most fans found it hilarious instead of scandalous (although some later questioned why she and Yokohara own the same sweatshirt).
    Yumirin's apology post: I believe that this is the result of my own lack of awareness. I'm very embarrassed with myself. It's so pathetic, I want to find a hole and hide in it. I'm really sorry about this.
• I Call It "Vera": She calls her saxophone Fairy-chan and considers it her "lover".
• Large and in Charge: She's one of the tallest members at 164 cm and is the lead performer in many of their songs, including the first five main singles.
• Rail Enthusiast: She included this in her official bio and occasionally hosts TV shows about Japanese trains or guests at train-related events. She is also very proud of her hometown's steam train, the SL Yamaguchi.
  • In the "Hana wa Dare no Mono?" music video, her photography club member character mentions that she prefers to take pictures of trains rather than people.
• Sexy Sax Man: Inverted and subverted. She's a tall (at least for an idol, 164 cm), adult woman (born in September 1997) and a formally trained saxophonist and occasional fashion model... but is so innocent and childlike that Okada Nana has said that she has no sex appeal whatsoever (at least in 2019).
• Signature Laugh: "ehehe".

Yano Honoka

"To the bright red heart... Strike!"

• Beautiful Singing Voice: She was a finalist in all three AKB Group Singing Contests and made top 8 in two.
• Buxom Beauty Standard: She likes to subtly show off her bust in social media and doesn't mind if other members grope her on camera.

2nd Generation

These members joined the group in December 2019 as trainees, and were promoted to regular members on September 12, 2021.

Ikeda Yura

"Ike! Ike! (Go! Go!) Go! Go! Today, Ikeda-chan is also... stylish (iketeru)!"

• Beautiful Singing Voice: In December 2020, she took first place in the 3rd AKB48 Group No. 1 Singer Contest.
• Young and in Charge: She's the lead singer of the singing contest finalists' vocal group, Nona Diamonds, and is the youngest of the nine.

Kudou Riko

"Everyone in Setouchi is Rikochi's love... slave (toriko)!"

• Fangirl: She regularly sings Disney songs in near-perfect English in her live streams and is called the Seto Inland Sea's Ariel.
• Genki Girl: She's quite loud and moves around a lot even in live streams.
• Motor Mouth: In two languages.
• Platonic Declaration of Love: She once shared in a Showroom live stream (November 27, 2022) that when she went for a short-term study abroad before joining the group, she casually said to a Chinese male fellow student that she'd known for some time "I love you" (我爱你) when she was about to return to Japan, not realizing that it's quite a serious thing to say in Chinese culture. The next thing she knew, he had bought her a BMW and a house for them to live and go to university together in China. Fortunately, the misunderstanding seemed to have been cleared without too much drama. There's also the issue that Riko joined the group at 17 years old, while the man was 30 when the incident happened.
• Property of Love: Her personal greeting requires the fans to declare themselves her love slave (toriko 虜).

Rissen Momoka

"More than peaches (momo) or plums (sumomo)... love Momo! I want to be as cute as a peach!" (it's based on a well-known tongue twister)

• It Runs in the Family: Her sister is former AKB Team 8 Kochi rep, Rissen Airi.

Takao Sayaka

• Alternate Character Reading: She wants to visit Kaohsiung, Taiwan, since the hanzi characters are exactly the same as her family name (高雄).
• Clingy Jealous Girl: She often expresses her disapproval of her fans who also support other members.

Graduated Members

Cho Orie

• But Not Too Foreign: She is ethnically Chinese, but grew up in Okayama. The Chinese reading of her name is Zhang Zhihui.

Kadowaki Miyuna

"I present you sweeeet onions along with my sweeeet voice!"

• Dancing Royalty: She's considered one of the best dancers in the entire 48 Group and occasionally performs solo. Her solo performances are usually titled Dance Dance Onion.
• Girlish Pigtails: Her trademark hairstyle.
• Ms. Fanservice: Accidentally or otherwise, she's had plenty of wardrobe malfunctions on her live streams.
• Otaku: She loves anime and had a voice acting cameo as a minor character in the anime adaptation of Children of the Sea with Otani Marina.
• Trademark Favorite Food: The onions from her home Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. It's part of her personal greeting and her Twitter handle, and her fans are called the Onion Corps (オニオン隊 Onion-tai; they use the English name, for some reason). The 48 Group actually has a song called "Awajishima no Tamanegi" ("Awaji Island Onions", originally by the disbanded SDN48) and she has performed it solo.

Mishima Haruka

• Girly Bruiser: She has a black belt in judo and knows other martial arts, and is often given the opportunity to demonstrate her skills. She successfully took down Setobingo host Andou Natsu, who weighs 130 kg, in episode 5.
  Paruto: In previous episodes, Andou Natsu-san hurt several members. I saw all that and cannot let it slide, so today I come to defeat her!

Okada Nana

"Departure preparations are all... OK!"

First captain of the group until January 2020. Concurrently a member of AKB48 Team 4. Runs the YuuNaaMogiOn YouTube channel with three other AKB members.

• Bifauxnen: Her usual look. Her costumes also tend to include trousers, instead of dresses, when feasible.
• Chivalrous Pervert: She's really kind and caring, but there's nothing "covert" about her perversion. She often says she has the sense of humor of a middle school boy, and often gropes other members' breasts during concerts.
• City Mouse: She often plays this role in the music videos.
• The Comically Serious: Her original shtick in AKB which has now been downplayed, although she's still the diligent type.
• Conflicting Loyalty: As a concurrent member of AKB and STU, she has publicly stated she wants to restore AKB's dominance as the main group over its sister groups, but also aims for the group she captains to grow to rival AKB. In the variety show Setobingo, she insists that both groups are equally important to her and compares AKB and STU to her right and left hands... but Kazlaser points out that she's right-handed which means that she puts AKB first.
  • A crossover between AKB48 Nemousu TV and STU48 Imousu TV, billed the "Whose Okada Show" (literally "Okada of Which [Group] Show"), plays this up by having members of AKB (Utada Hatsuka, Taniguchi Megu, and Murayama Yuiri) and STU (Takino Yumiko, Iwata Hina, and Otani Marina) compete for the right to claim Naachan for their group. The winner is STU, and the AKB members have to go home wearing "It's Okada Nana of STU48" T-shirts (of course, Naachan wasn't actually required to leave either group, whatever the result was).^* The final seduction segment might be inspired by the erotic late-night show Gilgamesh, which was also hosted by this show's host, Ijiri Okada. Naachan herself pays homage to that show's catchphrase.
    Trash Talk by Ogi Hiroaki, host of Nemousu TV: So you're STU48, huh? You look like country bumpkins, you're not cute at all!
• Does Not Like Spam: Her "Spams" are tomato and milk.
  • In the aforementioned "Whose Okada Show", the STU team earn points for specifying that her hamburger order must skip the tomato. However, AKB's Murayama Yuiri counters by claiming that both of them had promised to get over that aversion, forcing the match to a draw.
• Even the Girls Want Her: She pretty much has a girl or two in almost every sister group, including the overseas ones, although her closest companion is still AKB's Murayama Yuiri. Of course, she has plenty of female fans too.
• The Fettered: In 2017, she unofficially appointed herself the AKB Group's Public Morals Chairman. This may seem laughably hypocritical at first glance, but what she meant was she wants to improve the media and public's trust in the group (since there had been many scandals brought to light that year) and ensure that members follow the group's rules (i.e. the group's morals), instead of being a Moral Guardian in the traditional sense.
• Friend Versus Lover: While the three of them have a good relationship, AKB's Shinozaki Ayana often complains that Naachan took Murayama Yuiri away from her, even though Ayanan and Yuirii became friends first and Naachan is their junior. Ayanan even jokingly claims that YuuNaa shouldn't be allowed because it's a real romantic relationship and is therefore in violation of the group's romance ban.
• Happily Ever After: YuuNaa did a "Snow White" parody skit in their duo concert which ended with their characters getting married, which pretty much everybody treats as the real thing. The abbreviation "YuuNaaCon" became a Double Entendre, since kon (婚) also means "marriage".
• Hat of Authority: As the captain, she was given a ship captain's hat for her 21st birthday. She's also the only one to wear a sailor's cap in the "Shukkou" MV since she was the center, which many compare to Donald Duck's.
• Heroes Love Dogs: Fans are quite familiar with her two Toy Poodles, Saran (black coat) and Miran (white coat), who often appear in her social media and even in her (and Yuiri's) self-produced photocards. Ironically, she's actually allergic to dogs.
• Hopeless with Tech: One of her often-stated weaknesses. She's pretty good at taking pictures with her phone and always gets the latest iPhone, but was stumped by slightly more complex features like Instagram Live. Since starting her YouTube channel, she got herself a high-end MacBook Pro and has been trying to overcome this to be able to edit her own videos.
• Kaleidoscope Hair: Often changes her hair color, sometimes to blue or green.
• Sibling Team: While most idols prefer to keep their families out of the public eye, her real younger sister Rina, who is not a public figure, occasionally accompanies her during live streams. It helps that Rina is also a good singer and, according to some, looks even prettier than her sister.^* Her entire family and a childhood friend are shown in her documentary, but she is mostly not in character there.
• Team Mom: The most senior member after Sashihara Rino and former captain of the group.
  • In her 22nd birthday letter, other members expressed their wish to become as close to Naachan as the likes of Takino Yumiko and Kai Kokoa.
• Trademark Favorite Food: She often talks about and indulges in chocolate mint-flavored food. She also tends to wear mint green clothes.
• Yuri Fan: She's well known for this. The stage play she produced for the group is full of yuri songs. She shares a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with AKB's Murayama Yuiri, and their Concert Kiss in 2018's Coming of Age concert was a hot topic.
  • She's also known to give encouragement to fans struggling with their sexuality, and doesn't mind answering very personal questions like whether she or Yuiri is the "top" (they take turns).

Otani Marina

"Marina... Beam!"

27th class Actor's School Hiroshima student. Former member of STUDIO. Uses the stage name Hoshino Marina after leaving STU.

• Cloudcuckoolander: Her nickname is literally Tenrai-chan ("came from the heavens").
• Eye Beams: Her greeting involves shooting the fans with her "Marina Beam" and them raising a "barrier" to defend themselves.^* Yes, this is quite similar to former Nogizaka46 member and ASH student Nakamoto Himeka's special move. Marina looks up to both Nakamotos.
• It Runs in the Family: Her older sister, Ami, went to ASH with her and they were in a Hiroshima local idol group called Little Rabbit.
• Metalhead: Well, kawaii metal. She is a BABYMETAL fan (she went to Actor's School Hiroshima which Su-metal also attended) and sings "Gimme Chocolate!" in an episode of Setobingo, with Isogai Kanon and Kadowaki Miyuna as backup dancers. She also hummed several Babymetal songs in her Showroom sessions (singing the lyrics is apparently not allowed due to copyright issues) and has photos wearing Babymetal shirts and cosplay, including during handshake events. In late 2020, she was also ecstatic when Babymetal was announced as a performer in Kouhaku Uta Gassen, Japan's prime New Year's Eve music show, even though many 48 fans were lamenting AKB48 not being invited for the first time in 11 years.
• Otaku: She loves anime and had a voice acting cameo as a minor character in the anime adaptation of Children of the Sea with Kadowaki Miyuna.
• Shrinking Violet: She's an experienced performer, but is rather shy about speaking in public or interacting closely with others. Has also revealed that she prefers to keep to herself in the dressing room.
• The Xenophile: She likes talking about aliens and space in general.
  • In Setobingo, she leads several members in summoning aliens with the "Ventura, Ventura, Space People" chant from Urusei Yatsura.
  • She once said that her chubby cheeks are a distortion in spacetime.

Sakaki Miyu

"Will you eat (kuu ka) udon with CUCA?"

Former popular YouTube cover dancer, now runs the CUCA Channel. Drummer of Aoi Himawari.

• Child Prodigy: She taught herself dancing since the age of five and had independently accumulated 21,000 subscribers on her previous YouTube channel, which content she took down after she joined STU and later put back up.
• Cooking Show: A large portion of CUCA Channel are her cooking videos.
• In-Series Nickname: She's gone by CUCA from the time she was an independent cover dancer. It's what her younger brother called her during their childhood.
• Product Placement: She occasionally visits Setouchi Region's producers of award-winning artisan food items, such as Yamaroku soy sauce and Shōdo Island olive oil, to learn how they were made and purchase them for her cooking.
• Sweet Baker: She bakes various kinds of cake and bread.
• Trademark Favorite Food: She drinks a lot of coffee and cooks using olive oil in her YouTube channel.

Tanaka Kouko

"Kokkokko... Kokekokko!" (Japanese equivalent of "cockadoodledoo")

• Otaku: She's a huge fan of HKT48's Matsuoka Natsumi. They have worked together on several occasions and Natsu also wrote her a letter for her 24th birthday.

Torobu Yuri

• Awesome Mc Cool Name: Many have complimented her uncommon surname, which has been noted as sounding similar to dorobou ("thief").
• Determinator: In Setobingo episode 10, she reveals that she has participated in many idol group auditions before being admitted into STU, including the AKB Group Draft and HKT auditions. The STU audition was her eighth.

Yabushita Fu

"STU48's smile symbol is... Yabushita... Fuuu!"

Leader of MiKER!

• Alternate Character Reading: Her given name is the onyomi reading of 楓 (Chinese sweet gum), although that character is more commonly read with the kunyomi Kaede (maple; yes, the meaning changes with the reading) when used in names; in fact, she went by Kaede as a child until she had it legally changed.^*  Same with her sister, former NMB48 member Yabushita Shu (柊, "holly olive"), whose given name kanji is more commonly read with the kunyomi Hīragi. She explained this in several of her early Showroom broadcasts, even showing her old schoolbook with her former name at one point.
• It Runs in the Family: Her sister is former NMB48 member Yabushita Shu. She got to wear Shu's old costume as a tribute during STU's fourth anniversary concert.
• Nobody Touches the Hair: She's very particular about her hairstyle and burst into tears when it was messed up by the host in an episode of AKBingo!.
• Punny Name: She likes to play up her name's similarity to the sound of blowing wind, such as in a TV ad for the Nagasaki-Chan Men ramen chain where she blows her ramen with a loud "fuu" noise, as well as in her personal greeting. Also, she's from Osaka Prefecture (大阪府, Ōsaka-fu).
