Inglis and Close Associates

The protagonist, Inglis, her cousin Rafinha, and her other closest friends in the Knight Academy.

    In General
  • Action Girl: They are all capable fighters in their own right.
  • Bathing Beauty: Inglis and her friends enjoy bathing frequently.
  • Big Eater: As with their mothers, Inglis and Rafinha are both capable of consuming absurd amounts of food without ever getting ill. It got to the point where the two almost ran out of money to travel to school because they kept spending it on food and desserts.
  • Cleavage Window: The standard girl's uniform in their school has this for all the female students.
  • A Friend in Need: Inglis and her friends are always willing to help their friends whether it be each other, i.e. Rani and Inglis letting Leone stay with them, or others they become aquatinted with, such as Ripple.
  • Skewed Priorities: For Rafinha and Inglis, food takes priority over anything else. At an important event at the castle with the Crown Prince and several other important, high-ranking officials attending, magicite beasts suddenly mysteriously appear and risk attacking countless helpless civilians when they least expect it, causing a panic. Meanwhile, Inglis and Rafinha are also distraught and anguished, but that's because the magicite beasts landed on the buffet tables. This gets even worse when Inglis's first instinct isn't to prepare to fight these monsters, but to save all the food that flew off before it hits the floor and is wasted.
  • Skinship Grope: It would be easier to list who doesn't enjoy groping Inglis when they are in the baths. Rani is one of the first examples and the primary culprit, being quite jealous of Inglis's much larger chest and just as eager to feel them up.

Voiced by: Akari Kitou, Mugihito (past life)

The protagonist of the story, Holy Knight of the Goddess Alistia. Once the founder and Hero King of the Silvare Kingdom, upon her first death, she is rewarded a chance to be reborn and master swordsmanship and her combat skills, aspects of her life she was forced to put aside when she became King of her country. Though she was initially bothered by being reborn female, she quickly gets over it, and with the memories of her past life, the divine boon of Alistia still with her, and the support of her family and her friends like her cousin Rafinha, Inglis now aims to become just a renowned Squire, constantly fighting on the front-lines and taking on stronger monsters for the thrill of it.

  • The Ace: In the Knight Academy and the story in general, Inglis is one of the, if not the most powerful living combatant, able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of magicite beasts and dragons who are capable of razing entire countries and devastating armies on their own. Despite her incredible fighting prowess and still having the political cunning and strategic intelligence that elevated her to a King in her first life, she intentionally keeps herself at a low rank and avoids any prestigious positions that will put her behind a desk and away from the frontline.
  • Admiring the Abomination: To the privileged nobles and knight-candidates who are allowed inside the church it is housed in, to see the Frozen Prismer is an eye-opening and humbling experience to see just how ferocious and dangerous these highest class of magicite beasts are are, how gravely important is the Rune-holders' mission to subjugate them and protect the rest of the world, and how much of a relief that it's dead, despite being intact and not dissolving like most other magicite beasts. To Inglis, she can't contain her sheer excitement at the prospect of fighting it and is gleeful at the idea of it still being alive, breaking out of its confinement, and her having to put it down for good in an epic battle.
  • All for Nothing: While Inglis doesn't regret her previous life, she is understandably disappointed that everything her Hero King incarnation had done was swept under the rug due to the inadequacy of his successors.
  • Almighty Janitor: Not for any being looked over by her superiors for politics or petty reasons, mind you, but because Inglis specifically refuses promotions and anything that will get her a position that's NOT being thrown headlong into battle. She is a Squire, on the face of it just a supporting member to her cousin, the Knight-cadet Rafinha, but Inglis always does the bulk of fighting and takes down the most powerful of threats. She also does most of the actual business of strategizing and commanding if ever Rafinha is promoted into a field commander, as what happened in the town of Nova.
  • And Your Reward Is Infancy: Inglis awakens as a new born but with all the memories of their past life. A considerable amount of time has passed between his death and her rebirth however and magic has been mostly forgotten.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Despite being a famous swordsman in her previous life and still retaining incredible skills with the blade now, Inglis also trains very hard to fight unarmed if she has to, in case her weapon breaks or she cannot find a sword in time. It also helps her when she can't use a sword or whatever reason, like when she uses Silva's Exact Words not to "lay a hand on" some magicite beasts by kicking them instead.
  • Berserk Button: Inglis will take a fight extremely seriously when one of her favorite outfits are at risk of being destroyed, especially if they were made by her cousin.
  • Blood Knight: She is very eager to get into battles to improve her skills. This doesn't need to be friendly duels, mind you—in fact, she prefers it when people are explicitly out for her blood, as that means neither she nor they need to hold back on tactics. Her desire for good, tough fights has been compared to Goku.
  • Broken Pedestal: In her previous life as the Hero King, he thought highly of his subjects and the ones who would succeed him after he died. Fast forward to the following life, Inglis is extremely disappointed that the successors were failures in upholding the Hero King's legacy. When she sees an illusion of one of the people she previously knew during Principal Miriela's trial, she angrily demanded to know what went wrong, before ultimately realizing that they would be incapable of answering and contenting herself with beating them up instead.
  • Celibate Hero: Inglis was known as this in her previous life as the Warrior King. As a result, he never married and did not leave a blood descendant as heir to his throne, instead assigning one of his best warriors to succeed him after his inevitable death. His reason was his pining for Goddess Alistia, his patron deity, and wanting to make her his wife but such a romance never came to fruition.
  • The Chosen One: Inglis was this in her first life as the Hero King, his heroics and achievements earning the blessing of the Goddess Alistia. He used this power to found and raise the Silvare Kingdom into the massive, technologically-advanced and benevolent powerhouse it was before his inevitable death. In her second life, she still has Alistia's blessing and could do it all over again but explicitly chooses not to. After the previous life was spent in service of others, she just wants to use this life to fight to her heart's content and live life on her own terms rather than anyone else's.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Inglis is not a fan of any guys getting close to or touching Rafinha. Her uncle, Rafinha's father, even explicitly orders it and encourages it when the two leave for the Knight's Academy. She likens herself to a grandfather making sure his granddaughter is never taken advantage of.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Finding out the kingdom her previous life established has basically disappeared from history has cemented her decision to not take up the role of the hero again but rather support people such as her cousins who wish to take up that role themselves.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In Inglis's first life, he was orphaned from a young age after a magicite beast attack killed his parents and destroyed the village they were living in. He had to self-train swordsmanship to survive and it was only after discovering his aptitude for battle through experience and later, earning the Goddess Alistia's favor did he become the Warrior-King he was.
  • Declining Promotion: Since all she wants in her current life is to focus on polishing her swordsmanship skills, she refuses promotions and positions that will remove her from training and the battlefield.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: At the end of Volume 1, Inglis is forced to fight off a swarm of rat monsters without any clothes due to being in the baths.
  • Gayngst: Mild case. Due to Inglis being a man in a previous life, she has indicated on a few occasions to be attracted to women, but she has kept this information to herself. She can't completely suppress and hide it, though, such as how panicked she gets whenever other women are very casual about exposing their naked bodies to her in the bath; one passage describes Inglis as having a lot of trouble deciding where her eyes should be when several very well-developed and attractive ladies suddenly join the Academy's public women's bath.
  • The Good King: In her previous life, Inglis was well known as a powerful and highly skilled politician, with a caring heart and iron-clad moral standards that ensured his power would never corrupt him. Up till his inevitable death, he worked hard to ensure that his kingdom prospers and did his best to ensure that his successors would continue his work. Shame how it ultimately turned out.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Although Rafinha is no slouch when it comes to combat abilities, Inglis is essentially this by virtue of being her squire. She's far more competent in battle, though Rafinha herself doesn't hold it against her, and is merely happy to be able to fight at her cousin's side.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Inglis found out the hard way that the people her previous life was counting on to continue the legacy she created as the Hero-King failed spectacularly to do so, to the point that the kingdom she build was a long-forgotten memory by the time she was reincarnated.
  • Incompatible Orientation: To any guy that expresses any interest in Inglis, she does not return it due to being attracted to women. She keeps that information to herself, though sometimes it's difficult for her not to show signs of it. For example, when she is bathing with several classmates and staff from the Chiral Knight Academy, many of whom are very physically attractive women, the text describes Inglis as having trouble deciding where her eyes should be looking, especially as everyone sees no reason to cover themselves up or hide beneath the water.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Having had enough of being elevated to high positions and ruling over others in her previous life, especially with how it all ultimately ended many years later, Inglis actively hides the incredible power and potential she has with the Goddess Alistia's blessing and all her knowledge and skills she had honed from a previous life. All she wants to do is fight and no one is going to be throwing their most executive officers into the frontlines, just like that.
  • Like a Son to Me: In her first life as the Hero King Inglis, she considered her successor, Randall, to be this or a little brother. Inglis had found Randall orphaned from a magicite beast attack, took him under her wing, and helped nurture Randall's incredible natural aptitudes for the literary and martial arts. After Randall failed to develop a massive ego from this, and Inglis being a Celibate Hero who also never formally adopted children, Inglis decided to name Randall as her successor upon her death. Unfortunately, Inglis's hopes turned out to be misplaced.
  • Magic Knight: Inglis primarily fights using swordsmanship, but due to her incredible strength, she always has to use Spontaneous Weapon Creation to make ice swords that can be easily replaced once they inevitably break from the sheer amount of punishment she puts them through. Her mastery of Aether also lets her focus it into powerful beams that can pierce through even the likes of magicite beasts, though she generally uses this when she's unarmed, has to use incredible precision to avoid collateral damage, or needs an extremely large amount of firepower, fast, on a single very large target.
  • Master Swordswoman: While extremely skilled with the sword in her previous life as the Hero King and carries them into her second life, her goal is to reach the peak of mastering the blade.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Inglis doesn't have issues fighting naked or nearly naked if her life or the lives of people she cares for depend on it. She simply enjoys fighting.
  • Mystical White Hair: Inglis is reborn as a silver-haired girl and has been granted amazing power by a goddess who is responsible for her reincarnation.
  • No-Sell: Ivel tries to first cut off Inglis's arm, then eventually attacks her with everything he's got. Nothing affects her.
  • Rags to Royalty: In her first life, Inglis was an orphan, then a mercenary who had self-taught swordsmanship, and eventually the founder and beloved Hero King of the Silvare Kingdom. Quite the trajectory from devastating tragedy.
  • Reincarnated as the Opposite Sex: She was a man in her previous life, and whilst initially surprised to be a girl on reincarnation she grows to enjoy her feminine appearance in the mirror, as well as the sudden strong interest in sweets, as well as having a female friend group. The only remaining issue is that due to being a man in her previous life, she doesn't feel comfortable openly pursuing other woman romantically despite her attraction to them and not being attracted at all to men.
  • Relative Button: As much as Inglis enjoys fighting, if anyone hurts her cousin Rafinha, Inglis will end them even if they are an opponent that could give her a good fight. She is also not a fan of any guys getting close to her either. When she decides to teach Rahl a lesson, her primary reason is because she wished to fight, but her secondary reason is due to Rahl causing Rani to cry.
  • Risking the King: Literally in her first life as Hero King Inglis, and in her second life, she is actively trying to avoid this happening to her. Inglis just wants to fight and grow stronger, and any prestigious position that will have the higher-ups refusing to send her out to battle as it's just too risky to send her out is her worst nightmare. So, she actively tries to make herself an exceptionally competent rank-and-file soldier but no one you wouldn't think twice to send out to do the dirty business of live combat.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Inglis loves sporting these at fancy parties, and they don’t stop her from kicking ass when the chips are down.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Once Inglis arrives at the Knight Academy with Rafinha, it's been 8 years since Rafael last saw them as prepubescent 7-year old girls. Rafael is stunned to see how dramatically Inglis has developed at age 15, to the point that the other knights in his batch remark that this was the first time they'd ever seen Rafael, "the Academy's Most Popular Introvert," so struck by a woman's appearance.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Many characters in-universe express admiration for Inglis' physical traits and are eager to admire them physically, much to her dismay.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: After Inglis discovers that normal swords have a terrible tendency of breaking on her due to the extreme amounts of stress she puts them through, she starts resorting to making ice swords. These still shatter constantly but at least now she can make replacements on demand.
  • Sweet Tooth: Though Inglis didn't particularly care much for sweets in her past-life as the Warrior-King, reborn as a woman she finds herself just as irresistibly drawn to desserts as her cousin Rafinha.
  • To Be a Master: Inglis's goal in her second life as a Squire is to become the best swordswoman in the world. While she's very powerful in her own right, she still has yet to master her fighting skills, strength, and use of magic in order to get to that point.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: After being reborn as a woman, Inglis has actually grown to embrace being a woman. While she enjoys fighting, she also finds herself enjoying sweets and beautiful dresses.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: In the opening theme of the anime, Inglis is depicted as sporting this while she trains in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Undying Loyalty: While Inglis has stated she will live her life for herself and no one else, Rani is the one person she will prioritize over anything else.
  • World's Best Warrior: Her ultimate goal is becoming the best and strongest swordswoman the world has ever seen.

    Rafinha "Rani" Bilford
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rafinha_bilford.png
Voiced by: Ai Kakuma

Daughter of Marquis Bilford, and Inglis's first cousin and the Knight she is assigned to support in the Chiral Knight Academy. Rafinha is a young, idealistic, and optimistic lady, becoming a Knight in order to help people and perhaps more importantly, support her beloved cousin, Inglis. Though officially speaking, Rafinha is superior to Inglis by virtue of both being a Rune-holder, wielding an Artifact, and being the one in the Knight course, while Inglis is her Squire and assistant, more often than not Inglis is leading the way while Rafinha is happily going along with her plans.

  • A-Cup Angst: While she isn't completely flat, she is not very happy that, despite being first cousins, her assets are lacking in comparison to Inglis. This is made even worse because their mothers are sisters and have a much a less pronounced disparity.
  • Always Second Best: Despite having a rune, Rani has considered herself to be inferior to Inglis ever since they were children. However, Rani does not resent Inglis in the least for this.
  • Big Brother Worship: She thinks highly of her brother. She also thinks highly of her slightly older cousin, Inglis.
  • Deuteragonist: Rani is the character who receives the second most amount of attention in the series.
  • Energy Bow: Her Weapon Specialization. It is just two limbs and a grip, but thanks to her Rune, Rafinha can both produce and fire arrows of light without the need for a bowstring or a quiver.
  • Light 'em Up: Her Rune is of the Light element, which allows her to fire arrows and beams of light from her Energy Bow.
  • Morality Chain: Once Inglis sets her mind to someone, there is pretty much no one that can stop her except for Rani. Rani is the only person Inglis will prioritize. If Rani begs Inglis to divert from her present course, Rani is the only person Inglis will consider.
  • Rain of Arrows: One of her attacks with her Energy Bow Artifact is to fire a light arrow in the air that diffuses into several different light beams that can shower piercing death on anything below.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: She wants Inglis, her cousin, to marry her older brother, Rafael, so they would remain in each other's lives without any issues. The rest of the family sans Inglis herself is all for this potential union.

    Leone Olfa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leone_olfa.png
Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki

Daughter of House Olfa, a distinguished noble family that was famous for producing generations of Knights, until her older brother Leon Olfa defected to the Steelblood Front, which resulted in the entire family being shunned and disgraced simply for being related to the traitor. Despite this ostracizing and discrimination, Leone continues to enroll at the Knight Academy and does her best to restore her family's good name through her actions, along with the help of her roommates, Inglis and Rafinha.

  • Broken Pedestal: She used to think highly of her brother only to lose all respect for him after he betrayed everyone.
  • Cain and Abel: Due to her brother's betrayal, Leone is burdened with attempting to restore her family's honor.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Her eyes and hair are both purple.
  • Family Honor: Her primary motivation in the story is restoring the honor of House Olfa's name, thanks to the treasonous actions of her older brother, Leon Olfa. Leon was once one of the most powerful and respected Holy Knights in the kingdom, until he defected and joined the anti-Highlander terrorist organization, the Ironblood Chain Brigade, tainting the rest of the family's name by association.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her figure is certainly anything but "girlish," but Leone wears her hair in pigtails to emphasize her idealism and drive to do the right thing and restore her family's glory despite all the negative politics that surrounds House Olfa thanks to Leon's defection. It also helps contrast her optimistic view versus her older brother Leon's significantly more jaded view of the world.
  • Morph Weapon: Leone's first Artifact is a greatsword that is capable of shifting size to extend her reach, act as a large shield, or a gigantic lever to knock a falling airship out of the sky and away from the royal capital.

    Liselotte Arcia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liselotte_arcia.png
Voiced by: Wakana Kuramochi

Daughter of Duke Arcia, the current Prime Minister of the country. Despite the high status afforded to her, Liselotte still chose to enroll in the Chiral Knight Academy, in order to follow in the footsteps of the Hieral Menaces who once saved her life. Though her upbringing and being constantly embroiled in politics at the capital has made her very stiff and judgmental of others by their family reputations, she is still willing to acknowledge and act with her fellow Knights as equals and is slowly opening up thanks to Inglis.

  • Defrosting Ice Queen: While she is initially quite hostile to the group, especially Leone due to her brother Leon's high-profile defection to the Ironblood Chain Brigade and the sheer damage he'd caused to the Kingdom of Chiral, she eventually starts to warm up to the others and starts to see Leone as her own person with her own achievements, separate from the actions of her family members. It helps that beforehand she was already a very upstanding, charismatic, and principled leader, having had two Rune-holding Squires who joined specifically to keep following her and her example.
  • Lady of War: In Arcia territory, her rank is equivalent of that of a princess without a country to be royalty over, especially with her father being Prime Minister up till his resignation, at least. Regardless, she chooses to fight and train with other lower-ranking noble's childen and the second-onward children of similarly ranked families, voluntarily being on the front lines against magicite beasts and other threats.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: As seen in Defrosting Ice Queen entry, Liselotte eventually comes around.

The Knight Academy of Chiral

The primary training institute for raising the next generation of Knights and Squires who will protect Midland from the threat of magicite beasts and other dangers, like the Ironblood Chain Brigade. It also acts as a central hub for deploying and coordinating the deployment of full-fledged Knights and major operations, such as the relocation of the Frozen Prismer.

Alumni and Staff

    Principal Miriela
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miriela_sensei.png
Voiced by: Kiyono Yasuno

The principal of the Knight Academy, she oversees the education and well-being of the students as well as acting as the supreme commander for all operations that both students and full-fledged Knights undertake. Though friendly, calm, and playful, acting like an easygoing educator most times, she also has a brutally serious side, putting her students through grueling tasks to make sure they are strong enough to face the grim realities of fighting magicite beasts and other threats like the Steelblood Front.

  • Blatant Lies: Despite the trustworthiness, integrity, and calm under pressure that is needed of a top-level military commander, Miriela is not above extremely poor stress-lying when a situation catches her sufficiently off-guard. During her orientation exercise as mentioned in Training from Hell, Inglis manages to both beat it effortlessly and guarantee the entire freshman class free meals for a month, which will cause a disastrous drain on the Academy's budget. Miriela hurriedly claims this was a "demonstration" of what the game will be like. Then Inglis does it again, Miriela says it's a second demonstration, and the students start calling her out on it.
  • Gravity Master: The first demonstration of her incredible power is creating a large gravitational field on the entire 1st year batch, making them so heavy it's nearly impossible to move, while sustaining that for 3 minutes and powering her Mecha-Mooks, the golems.
  • Older Than She Looks: It's implied that Miriela is artificially keeping her appearance young by some means despite having served for many, many decades, likely through the use of Highlander technology.
  • Robot Master: Using her staff and her Rune, she can also summon and command robot-like golems to do her bidding.
  • Training from Hell: She puts the students through this, like the other teachers do with their classes. In Miriela's case, her idea of a fun "first day orientation" activity is to put all the freshman students on a platform, crush them under the weight of dramatically increased gravity to the point that most of them can barely move, then before they can even acclimate, Miriela sics 3 golems on them who are going to try to knock them off. The prize for winning is a month of free meals at the dining hall.

    Rafael "Rafi" Bilford
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rafael_bilford.png
Voiced by: Atsushi Tamaru, Aya Yamane (child)

Son and heir of Marquis Bilford, and the older brother of Rafinha and older cousin of Inglis. Talented, intelligent, and with unfailing principles, Rafael's being blessed with a Special-grade Rune all but guaranteed he would be elevated to the status of a future hero and savior of the country. For most of the story, he is a graduate of the Academy and works on its most dangerous and high-priority missions such as those involving escorting royalty.

  • Always Someone Better: He is The Ace of his family and the knight order he trained under as a child; at age 13, he is already a highly skilled swordsman that can beat all the adults except their most skilled and experienced fighter, Captain Luke Eucus, who is also Rafael's uncle. After Rafael's cousin Inglis shows off her overwhelming mastery of the sword and dueling by winning her match against Rahl, who utterly humiliated everyone else earlier (albeit by cheating), a surprised Rafael asks his uncle Luke if he'll ever be able to surpass Inglis's level. Luke says he could—as Inglis is now at 5 years old, and once she grows up, he'll never hope to match her.
  • The Chosen One: By virtue of having a Special-grade Rune, high hopes and much care and investment was put into Rafael to ensure that he would reach the incredible potential he would have with all his magical power.
  • Improbable Age: Even at age 15, where most people would just be starting their first year at Chiral Knight Academy, Rafael was already incredibly busy with important deployments that a full-fledged Knight would normally have. He was even slated to be the Knight escort of a royal inspector in his hometown of Ymir, before his incredibly packed schedule led to Leon being assigned, instead.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Through a mix of both the practical realities of Rune-holders, the threat of magicite beasts, and the religion and culture that arose from them, being the owner of a rare Special-class Rune can be a curse as much as a blessing. Specifically, Rafael is all but guaranteed to be trained and pushed to become a hero who will save the country, no matter the cost. In the opening of Volume 1/Episode 1, an 8-year-old Rafael laments that he cannot join the knights in fending off magicite beasts as he's too valuable to lose before he comes into his full potential. 15 years later, he's still largely stuck with enormous political pressures from the Midlanders who desire his power and the influence that affords them and the Highlanders who see him as either a threat to their technological dominance or perhaps a very useful new slave, if they could convince Midland to give him up.
  • Playing with Fire: His Artifact is a flaming sword that can shoot fiery slashes at long distances.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: To Inglis, especially prominent once she is 15 and the two meet each other again after about 7 years apart. His fellow Knights believe that Rafael just has no interest in romance despite how many women are interested in him, in turn, until they see him being flustered by Inglis and Inglis alone.
  • Weapon Specialization: From a young age, he was trained in using longswords after having shown great proficiency with them outright. His skills have only advanced even further with all the training he received after receiving a Special-grade Rune and an extremely powerful sword-type Artifact.

Students

    Silva Ayren
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/silva_eiren_1.png
Voiced by: Fumiya Imai

The top-ranked 3rd year student in the current batch, and the owner of a Special-class Rune. He always looks out for the best chances of success and minimization of risks, though this leads him to being hostile and discriminatory to others, especially Rune-less Squires.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: Graceless and blunt as he is about it, Silva is right that when dealing with magicite beasts (especially ones that mysteriously appear out of nowhere from a Hieral Menace), Knights with Runes and Artifacts are the best ones to fight them. It just so happens that Inglis is far from a normal Squire, even though she has no Rune.
  • My Greatest Failure: Silva reveals that when he was a child, a Magicite beast attacked him and his Runeless friend who sacrificed himself for him. This event spurred him to become the knight and protect the Runeless.
  • Stoic Spectacles: He's a serious, no-nonsense person and wears glasses.
  • Weapon Specialization: Rifles, specifically, a magically powered one that only he can use due to his Special-class Rune.

    Yua
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yua_2.png
Voiced by: Miyu Tomita

The top-ranked 2nd year student.

  • A-Cup Angst: She wants to grow big breasts, so that she can be popular.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Yua is the best student in the second year, but she's incredibly lazy and would rather sleep than help other squires deal with Magicite beasts.
  • The Nicknamer: Instead of remembering people's names, she uses embarrassing nicknames like "Boob Girls" (Inglis and Leone), "Curly Hair" (Liselotte), "Little Demon" (Rani) and "Lady Dog Ears" (Ripple).

    Lahti
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lahti.png
Voiced by: Kōhei Amasaki

An exchange student from Alcard, a neighboring country in the north. He's in the squire program.

    Pullum
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pullum.png
Voiced by: Hiyori Kouno

A girl in the knight program. Like Lahti, she's an exchange student from Alcard.

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Pullum hates it whenever Lahti pays attention to other girls, particularly Inglis.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair in low pigtails that look cute and somewhat childish in her.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a singler hair sticking up on the top of her hair. While not an idiot, she's prone to Clingy Jealous Girl antics towards Lahti.
  • Satellite Character: Most of her characterization and interactions center around Lahti.

The Hieral Menaces

Artifact weapons crafted by Highland, sent down to Midland for the purpose of supporting the kingdoms in their fight against magicite beasts, and are the only weapons strong enough to put down their highest and most dangerous class, the Prismers. They have the unique distinctions of being able to transform into humanoid forms and wield weapons themselves, and needing an exceptionally powerful and skilled Special-class Rune-holder to even get to use them in their weapon forms.

    In General
  • The Ageless: Eris once complains that because she is an Artifact, she and the other Hieral Menaces like Ripple are stuck in their respective youthful, 20-something forms for all of eternity.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: If they ever need to transform into their weapon forms and be wielded by a Special-class Rune-holder, it will be as a tactic of absolute last resort as the sheer strain and mana-drain on the wielder will more often than not kill them afterward.
  • Equippable Ally: Though they are mostly seen in their humanoid forms and wielding separate weapons, Hieral Menaces are still Artifact weapons and can transform to be wielded by Knights. However, as noted below, this privilege is exclusive to Special-class Rune-holders.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Due to their incredible power and the sheer amount of mana someone would need to even wield them in their weapon forms, Hieral Menaces only choose to partner with exceptionally powerful Special-class Rune-holders and fight on their own the rest of the time.

    Eris
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eris_auo_anime.png
Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi

The first Hieral Menace introduced in the story. Though initially in the Ymir Kingdom with her partner, the Holy Knight Leon, Leon's defection to the Ironblood Chain Brigade has led to their going their separate ways and Eris's path joining with Inglis's, instead. She is serious and cold, coming off as "distant" or "unfriendly" at best, but beneath it all she is an extremely empathetic individual who wants to do right by the world and its people.

  • Dual Wielding: In her humanoid form, she specializes in using two short swords coupled with incredible speed and agility.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Eris is not very friendly, to say the least, and her plan to save Inglis from (what she thinks is) throwing herself into a suicidal assassination mission against a Highlander is to fight Inglis and show off how terribly outclassed (Eris thinks) Inglis is.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Make no mistake, her swords are short and her appearance looks like she can't pack much of a punch, but as a Hieral Menace, appearances are just that. She is extremely fast and absurdly powerful, able to make a Clean Cut on a solid metal sword after less than a few minutes of combat.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After defeating the magicite beast version of Rahl, Eris is far kinder to Inglis and Rani than when she was initially introduced.

    Ripple

Voiced by: Naomi Ozora

The second Hieral Menace Inglis meets. In contrast to Eris, Ripple is a much more friendly, outgoing, and playful Hieral Menace, eager to pal around and interact with the Knights she will be fighting with.

  • Dual Wielding: In her humanoid form, she uses two revolvers to fight with.
  • Guns Akimbo: Ripple has the privilege of using two magical guns, especially notable because of the Fantasy Gun Control enacted by Highland, and a sign of just how powerful Ripple is because of the mana requirements to even use them.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She has dog ears and a dog tail.
  • Power Incontinence: For mysterious reasons that the Academy investigates and Inglis helps solve and manage, her mana is leaking out and is summoning magicite beasts out of nowhere.

Highlanders

A humanoid race blessed with stigmatas, special magical symbols that grant them incredible magical powers, or humans that had been turned into Highlanders through some process. They live in Highland, a Floating Continent powered by highly advanced Magitek that is leaps and bounds beyond what Midland has, with such wonders such as the Flygears, guns, and medical techniques that can surpass the limitations of frail mortal bodies.

    In General
  • Body Backup Drive: As shown by Mynnti/Sir Rambach, Highlanders aren't even constrained by the limitations of mortal bodies and sickness. If one's body gets too old, sick, or physically injured to be of much use, Highlanders can simply replace it with a new, younger form without any of the detriments.
  • Fantastic Racism: Though not present in ALL Highlanders, as a whole they are best known for their general disdain, demeaning, and abuse of the Midlanders as a "lesser species" and source of Human Resources and regular resources to be traded for at exploitative rates, using Highland's exclusive access to magic to ensure no Midlander can refuse them.
  • Floating Continent: All of them make a floating, traveling island that hovers over Midland their main base of operations and city to live in, with only a small handful deigning to make residences in Midland for more than a few months. This is also where they get their name, as their land is high above the rest of the world.
  • Flunky Boss: Few of the Highlanders shown are willing to throw themselves alone into a fair fight or put themselves at risk in general. More often than not, they are protected and use various types of slaves to do most of the fighting fore them; rumors from the other characters also mention that Highlanders are well known for commanding from the rear, using legions of conscripted soldiers to do most of the fighting for them.
  • Magitek: They monopolize all use and creation of it, and have a vast variety of different types, such as the Flygears that they use to get around and the similar technology that keeps their Floating Continent airborne; magical guns as anti-personnel weapons; and the Stigmata which allow them to both cast spells like fireballs and power these pieces of technology themselves.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: All Highlanders posses and are distinguished by their Stigmata, a marking on their foreheads that seem to be the source of their magical powers. It can be granted to normal Midlanders, transforming them into Highlanders physiologically, but the process is kept mysterious, in keeping in line with Highlanders dominance through strict technology and information monopolization.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Though the majority of Highlanders we see take a supremacist attitude and believe Midland to be nothing more than a source of raw resources and personnel to exploit and control through their monopolization of Magitek, there is a rival faction that wishes to be more generous and kind to the Midlanders. See Lady Seilyn below for the earliest and most prominent example of this splinter faction.

    Lady Seilyn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seilyn_1.png
Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki

The consul of the city of Nova, notable for taking a direct approach in the management and day-to-day operations of her territory rather than assigning a Midlander representative. She is beloved by her constituents for her kindness, compassion, and generosity to Midlanders in contrast to the usual abuses and extortion the Highlanders perform. Chief among this is her adopting and taking care of orphans.

  • Forced Transformation: The Ironblood Chain Brigade poisons her with Prisma Powder, turning her into an unintelligent monster. The heroes manage to render her harmless, but as far as anyone knows, she can never be human again.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: She is the first introduction to the major ideological split between the Highlanders, namely, the faction that wishes to be more benevolent to the Midlanders like her, helping their technological and cultural advancement, rather than the usual MO of exploiting Midlanders for resources and slaves, using their access to Artifact weapons and other helpful technologies as leverage. She even has plans to enact a full on rebellion against Highland using her people as an army, but the Ironblood Chain Brigade puts an early end to that plan.
  • Naked First Impression: Chris and Rani first meet Seilyn when they're all taking a bath.
  • Naked on Arrival: Her proper introduction into the story has her in the baths with nothing besides a Modesty Towel.
  • Parental Substitute: She acts as a mother-figure for the orphans of Nova, taking care of them in the Lord's castle, and they are clearly very fond of her in turn, doing things like wanting to sneak into the bath with her.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Her name has been translated as Seilyn or Cyrene.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She is a benevolent ruler to her Midlander constituents, and even when some of them defect from her rule and try to assassinate her, she chooses to spare their lives and pardon their crimes rather than execute them, and she takes in and takes care of orphaned Midlanders who are very grateful and attached to Lady Seilyn. The Ironblood Chain Brigade still poisons her with Prisma Powder and transforms her into a magicite beast, because to them, all Highlanders deserve to die no matter their individual actions. Not that they don't allow to Take a Third Option that simply shrinks her form into a fairy-like being.

The Steelblood Front

An anti-Highlander terrorist organization. Born from the victims and survivors of the Highlanders various abuses and terrorizing of the Midlanders, they will stop at nothing to kill all Highlanders and literally pull their territory down from the sky, even if they have to sacrifice themselves to do it.

    In General
  • Fantastic Racism: To them, the only good Highlander is a dead one. This leads to them poisoning Lady Seilyn, despite her leading a faction that ideologically opposes the exploitative practices of the Highlanders.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: The members are either those who were victims of Highlander oppression or realized just how corrupt the Highlanders were. Unfortunately, their way of correcting the Highlanders' abuse of power is by plotting to exterminate them entirely, even the Highlanders who actually dislike how the rest of their kind operate.
  • Taking You with Me: If it comes down to it, they will happily sacrifice each and every member if it means destroying all Highlanders with them.

    Black Mask

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi

The enigmatic leader of the Steelblood Front. Little is known about him (if he even is a "he"), other than his burning hatred for Highlanders, his willingness to drive himself and his subordinates to whatever lengths necessary in their guerilla war against them, and his stalwart devotion to no Midlanders being hurt in their battle.

  • I Gave My Word: When Inglis questions the Steelblood Front's gruesome and extreme methods, Black Mask specifically states that their organization only seeks the destruction of all Highlanders and, and mean no harm to come to other Midlanders when they can help it. When he offers Inglis a chance to non-lethally subdue a transformed Lady Seilyn, Inglis is understandably wary and wonders why Black Mask would pass up the chance to murder another Highlander. But, Black Mask keeps his word and says as much to Inglis, albeit it was mostly to minimize Midlander casualties.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: He is so named because he refuses to give anything more identifiable than the mask he wears. Though he is quite reasonable with Inglis, honors his promises even if he made them to his enemy, and has benevolent goals in protecting Midlanders from the abuses of Highland, he is all too willing to stoop to inhumane and gruesome tactics like assassination, poisonings (particularly using Prism Powder on Highlanders), and crafting false-flag attacks to blame the Knights for their actions. No harm will come to innocent Midlanders—everyone else, there are no limits.

    Leon Olfa

Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura

Once one of the most distinguished, famous, and beloved of Chiral's Holy Knights, to the point of being the partner of the Hieral Menace Eris, Leon's being instrumental to the murder of a Highland inspector and his defection to the Steelblood Front have all but tarnished any goodwill he and his family had. Nowadays, he often comes into conflict with Inglis as she gleefully throws herself headlong into conflicts with the Steelblood Front and the Highlanders.

  • Affably Evil: Despite his betrayal, he does seem to legitimately be friendly with his enemies.
  • Cain and Abel: Betraying the Holy Knights makes him the Cain to his sister, Leone's Abel.
  • Fallen Hero: In-universe, he was once one of the most beloved Holy Knights in the world, and Inglis and Rafinha initially have very friendly interactions with him. Once he sets to motion his plan to assassinate a Highland inspector, and then continues to partake in the Steelblood Front's terrorist attacks, he is firmly a villain and is all too willing to attack anyone that gets in his way, like Inglis.
  • Power Fist: His Artifact weapons are a pair of metal gauntlets that allow him to effectively channel lightning from his hands or fight close-quarters with devastating effectiveness.
  • Shock and Awe: His Special-class Rune is Lightning attuned, letting him shoot lightning from his hands or summon familiars that are made of lightning.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He thinks little of trying to murder a 12-year-old Inglis when she gets in the way of him assassinating a Highland inspector.

    Sistia Rouge
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sistia_rouge.png
Voiced by: Eri Kitamura

A rogue Hieral Menace who works for the Steelblood Front. After witnessing so much of the abuse and oppression that the Midlanders suffered under her former masters, the Highlanders, and how little was being done to stop it, Sistia decided she'd take a more personal approach in wreaking her justice, however her new master, Black Mask, decides it.

  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Out of Steelblood Front, Sistia is the only member with an outfit that exposes the midriff. She's also the only female warrior in the group.
  • Defector from Decadence: She was once a Hieral Menace serving Highland and cooperating with the Midland kingdoms, guaranteeing her respect and privileges similar to that of Special-class Knights, if not greater. She abandoned it all to run with the guerillas of the Steelblood Front and does not seem particularly bothered by her lowered living standards, if it means she is no longer an almost-literal instrument for Highland's oppression.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has flaming red hair, incredible passions (especially for justice for Midlanders and vengeance on Midlanders), and is one of the most violent and aggressive Hieral Menaces we've seen so far.
  • Stripperiffic: Her battle gear exposes her cleavage, midriff, and thighs.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Sistia uses her mana to create portals that greatly extend the reach of her spear and open up near-limitless angles of attack for which to catch enemies off guard. She can also extend the reach of her limbs, such as when she tried to strangle Rafinha to death by sticking her hand through a portal she made.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Assuming they're impeding the Steelblood Front's efforts, Sistia has no hesitations attacking the 15-year-old Inglis and Rafinha, going so far as to catch the latter off guard and try to cruelly strangle her to death.

Merchants, Nomads, and Non-Citizens

This section is for characters and entities that either have no permanent residence, such as traveling merchants, or for those entities that exist outside of a kingdom and swear no affiliation to other organizations.

Rambach Trading Company

A family-owned merchant trading company. Though their primary business is buying and selling goods from place to place, the incredibly dangerous nature of the world has them both hiring and training capable fighters within their ranks. Later, after the owner and his heir, Sir Rambach and Rahl, ascend to Highlander status, the remaining employees reform under the leadership of a commoner trader named Myynti.

    In General
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both father and son arrogantly gloat and mock their opponents when they believe they have them at an overwhelming disadvantage.
  • Starter Villain: While Rahl takes more immediate center stage, they both act as the first antagonists Inglis encounters.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both Sir Rambach and his son, Rahl, share the exact same hair and eye colors. The layers of fat on Sir Rambach's face make it hard to see if Rahl shares that trait with his father, though.

    Sir Rambach
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rambach_1.png
Voiced by: Kōsuke Gotō

The current head of his eponymous trading company. Portly and proud, he takes much stock in the strength of his guards and the fighting prowess of his son, especially when he is invited to friendly sparring matches with knight orders to help keep each other's skills sharp. Beneath his friendly exterior and amicable behavior, however, something more sinister lurks.

  • Fat Bastard: He's quite pudgy and portly, on account of his using a great deal of his accumulated wealth to have luxurious meals for himself, and once he manages to save up enough "tribute" to ascend him and his son to Highlander status, he leaves the rest of his company to fend for itself without any contingency plans about succession. Or so it seems.
  • Mean Boss: According to his informal successor, Mynnti, after Sir Rambach and Rahl became Highlanders, they basically abandoned the rest of the firm down in Midland. He is still this, albeit to the monstrous Rune Eater he treats as little more than a vicious attack animal and intentionally starves and abuses to better suit his needs.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He outlives his son Rahl.
  • Revenge Myopia: He wants revenge on Inglis while his son's actions were what resulted in his death. That's not even getting into the fact he intended to force himself on Inglis.

    Rahl Rambach
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rahl_rambach_1.png
Voiced by: Chiaki Kobayashi

Sir Rambach's son and heir. Though he might initially seem meek and hesitant, Rahl quickly proves himself to be an arrogant bully and a cheater, never hesitating to use any advantage or superior status no matter how unfair or unethical to get what he wants without consequences. He starts off as Inglis's first real antagonist at age 5, when she challenges him in a sword-fighting duel after she catches him secretly cheating using magic, and comes into conflict with her again 7 years later when Rahl has ascended to Highlander status and visits the Ymir Kingdom as an inspector.

  • Asshole Victim: He ends up being poisoned with Prisma Powder and transformed into a magicite beast, and Inglis proceeds to put him down. After he tried to sexually harass a female Knight, murdered a noble in cold blood for daring to try and advise him to stop, and then demanding that they offer up the 12-year old Inglis as "an apology," few tears are shed for him.
  • Attempted Rape: He doesn't make it a secret he intended to force himself on a 12-year old Inglis due to petty grudge.
  • Defeating the Cheating Opponent: Rahl tries to use secretly magic to slow down the reaction times of his sparring partners, netting him easy wins against the much older and more experienced Knights of Ymir. He ends up being defeated by Inglis, who is both 8 years younger than him and is literally fighting with her eyes closed, because she is simply so much better at swordsmanship than him.
  • Evil Laugh: He has an extremely arrogant and mocking wild laugh whenever he humiliates and overwhelms his opponents, however illegitimate and unethical the means he took to win.
  • Playing with Fire: Becoming a Highlander has given him an incredible affinity for Fire magic. He uses it to burn a lord alive after he tries to stop Rahl from sexually harassing a female Knight.
  • Offing the Annoyance: Rahl remains as petty and smug as an adult as he was at a child, only now that he's a Highlander with magical powers, he now goes so far as to murder people that annoy him.
  • Petty Childhood Grudge: 7 years later, it's revealed that he never got over Inglis seeing through his cheating and beating him fair and square during that sparring match with the Ymir Knight Order. Even more prominent in that his idea of vengeance is demanding Inglis as a sex slave after he harassed another female knight and murdering Lord Shiony in cold blood after he politely suggested Rahl stop.

    Myynti
A commoner who ends up taking control of the firm after Sir Rambach and his son both ascend to Highlander status, and left the rest of the firm to fend for themselves.
  • Body Backup Drive: As it turns out, Sir Rambach's original body was getting too old to sustain, so he had his mind transferred into this younger Highlander form.
  • Dirty Coward: Like most Highlanders, he hides behind and abuses the Rune Eater into doing his dirty work for him, and doesn't directly fight Inglis.
  • Eaten Alive: His ultimate fate is being devoured by the very same Rune Eater he was trying to sic on Inglis and Rafinha.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: As he has the stigmata that would out him as a Highlander, he always wears some sort of head covering. Inglis quickly picks up that something is up with him, alongside the other suspicious aspects like his control over mana.
  • You Killed My Father: Inverted. Myynti is trying to kill Inglis for killing his son, Rahl, after he was transformed into a magicite beast and Inglis was forced to fight him.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's extremely hard to discuss anything about him without revealing the fact that he's Sir Rambach in a younger Highlander body.
