Roan

Voiced by: Daisuke Sakaguchi (Japanese), Greg Ayres (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/68923.jpg
A Swordsman who wants to be strong so that he can protect his childhood friend, Yuufa.
  • Ax-Crazy: After being snapped at by Yuufa and realizing how useless he is, Roan goes on rampage and kills every monster he sees. This act scares the three bandits that travel with him as well.
  • Break the Cutie: He is often implied or even stated as weak or useless when he is a Swordsman, which saddens him to the point he becomes emotionally unstable.
  • Cool Sword: His last sword is given by the witch of Comodo. Aside from its unique shape, it changes its form in the final battle.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: He manages to beat a Golden Thief Bug as a Swordsman.
  • Dumbass No More: After becoming a Crusader, all of his previous goofy and cowardly quailties dissapear completely.
  • Happily Married: After the Time Skip, both he and Yuufa have a ring on their finger, signifying that they had married each other.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Yuufa snaps at him and tells him to leave, he is so shocked that he becomes emotionally unstable. He also suffers one when he sees Iruga comforting a grieving Yuufa after yet another encounter with her brother Keough, who's done a Face–Heel Turn.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: After becoming a Crusader, his techs are mostly holy elemental.

Yuufa

Voiced by: Nana Mizuki (Japanese), Carrie Savage (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/52818.jpg
An Acolyte who is Roan's childhood friend. She is Keough's little sister, and is surprised at the fact that his brother is still alive, who should have died at Glast Heim.
  • Break the Cutie: She sees her brother being killed in a Heroic Sacrifice for Roan, Iruga, and her. Soon, it is revealed that Keough is alive, but unfortunately, he is now evil. Yuufa also witnesses Keough injuring and even poisoning Iruga.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Shows signs of this from time to time, such as when Roan seemed a little too excited to see Takius again, or whenever she gets into a fight with Judia over Iruga.
  • Damsel in Distress: She is shown to often be in a trouble in early episodes. In the flashback, she was about to be eaten by a Mandragora, and was saved by Keough. Then, in the present, she often falls under Keough's control and almost follows him. In the end, she follows Keough and becomes evil as well.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Later on, she follows Keough and becomes evil. She nearly kills Roan, but a vision of her brother's final farewell breaks her evil influence.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After she's broken out of her mind control trance, she has that look on her face when she realizes that she inserted a cursed ruby into Roan, and stabbed him with a magic dagger. Fortunately The Power of Love prevails, and saves his life when their kiss manages to eject the ruby from his body.
  • Power Glows: Most of her spells involve glowing effects.

Maya

Voiced by: Haruko Momoi (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/102786.jpg
A Merchant who dislikes humans and is pretty selfish at first. She hates going to her hometown due to her Dark and Troubled Past, but after befriending Alice, she changes her opinion.
  • Berserk Button: She doesn't hesitate to unleash her fury when she sees that Alberta is burning and Alice is seemingly killed.
  • Break the Cutie: Maya suffers this A LOT! Starting from her Dark and Troubled Past to losing her best friend, Alice, whom she kills due to her being unable to recognize Alice in the monster form and believing that the monster has killed Alice, and eventually witnessing Jiltus' Heroic Sacrifice / Redemption Equals Death for her as a sign of friendship.
  • Broken Bird: Despite her mostly Genki Girl persona, she's had a horrible upbringing due to being the Sole Survivor as a baby on a ship that crashed into Alberta, and later being mistreated by the citizens of said town while she struggled to survive as an orphan.
  • Crocodile Tears: In the beginning, she sheds them to get Yuufa's sympathy.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She is a baby found in a shipwreck and grows up alone. Then, when Poi-Poi keeps bringing her apples, she decides to sell the apples. But the people in Alberta aren't happy, and several Merchants there appear to smash her apple cart and beat her up. She grows to hate humans and her hometown because of this.
  • Freudian Excuse: At first she seems very manipulative, greedy, and only looking out for herself. However, when her past is revealed of her struggling just to survive as an orphan in Alberta, it's hard not to sympathize with her doing whatever it took to survive. Despite her mistrust of others, she seems to have bonded with Roan and Yuufa's group.
  • Manipulative Bastard: The reason she joins Roan and Yuufa in the culverts is to get into the deeper dungeon to get better items. She also leaves the party when things are getting rough.
  • One-Steve Limit: Don't confuse her with the other Maya, the queen of Ant Hell and a boss in the game.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: She is a little kid, but is capable of smashing her foes with a cart and defeating bigger monsters.
  • Sole Survivor: She was found on an abandoned wrecked ship as a baby. It's later revealed that nobody took her in, perhaps because they feared her origins, and she basically lived alone struggling just to survive.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: She throws bombs later in the anime.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When she sees that Alberta is burning, she thinks that the huge monster that creeps towards her has killed Alice. Angered at that thought, she attacks the monster relentlessly with her axe and knocks it off a cliff, killing it. Tragically, it is later revealed that the monster is actually Alice.

Takius

Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Jennifer Seman (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/102785.jpg
A Magician who is always in search of 'truth'.
  • Anti-Magic: After the events of Payon shaken her, she leaves the party to advance as a Sage. A perfect counterpoint against her treacherous and lying mentor, who is a powerful Wizard.
  • Blindfolded Vision: She stumbles at the first time she wears the blindfold, but she finally gets used to it. She realizes the folly of wearing the blindfold as another way for Zephyr to manipulate her and takes it off when she becomes a Sage.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Heaven's Drive and Earth Spike.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": "Takius" isn't her real name. Her real name is Catherine, but she doesn't really like being called with her real name, for reason that's never explained.
  • Energy Absorption: Magic Rod.
  • An Ice Person: Seems to favor using water property spells like Cold Bolt and Frost Diver. As a Sage, she can amplify her spells with Deluge.
  • Seeker Archetype: She is always searching for 'truth', and it is actually due to Zephyr's control.
  • Shock and Awe: Another element that she favors is Wind spells like Lightning Bolt and Thunderstorm.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Much like Roan and Yuufa, she leaves the group temporarily to upgrade her class and become a Sage.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In the Ant Hell, she suddenly smashes the queen's egg, which enrages all the ants in it and nearly gets everybody killed. It is more poignant since the colony is nothing but accommodating to them. She can't be fully accountable, given Zephyr's machinations on behalf of the Big Bad and uses Takius as his proxy.

Iruga

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese), Charles Baker (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/68438.jpg
An Assassin who once traveled with Roan and Yuufa, along with Keough.

Judia

Voiced by: Minako Arakawa (Japanese), Caitlin Glass (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/102788.jpg
A Hunter who was once very unskilled, but after a fateful meeting with Iruga, she improved a lot. She also develops a relationship with Iruga.
  • Accent Adaptation: Her Kansai accent is a Texas accent in the English dub and a Visayan accent in the Filipino dub.

    Villains

Dark Lord

Voiced by: Yosuke Akimoto (Japanese), R. Bruce Elliott (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16985.jpg
A dark being who is the greatest representation of evil.

Keough

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese), Robert McCollum (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/298745.jpg
A Knight. He is also Yuufa's brother. He once traveled along with Yuufa, Roan, and Iruga, but during the adventure at Glast Heim, things got dangerous and he had to do a Heroic Sacrifice to save his friends. In the present, it turns out that he is alive.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He isn't dead yet after his Heroic Sacrifice. Instead, he becomes evil.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He distracts Abysmal Knight to give Iruga just enough time to get out of Glast Heim with Roan and Yuufa. Unfortunately, Abysmal Knight stabs and 'kills' him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Cruel as MANY of his words may be, some of his words towards the heroes rings some truth to them. Rather it's Calling Roan out on his weakness , or Yuufa out on her selfishness. And saying them is what Causes both of them to finally get stronger.
  • Left for Dead: After telling Iruga to take Roan and Yuufa away while he's busy fighting a dangerous monster, he's last seen being impaled by the dark horseman. Since they're too weak to rescue him, they're forced to leave his body behind. It turns out that he actually survived that fight, but was held prisoner by the Dark Lord, who then also brainwashed him into evil when he continually suggests his companions abandoned him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He is fast, tough, and powerful.
  • Motive Rant: Keough frequently clashes with Jiltus in terms of how they execute their own Evil Plan.
  • Mutual Kill: Both he and Iruga deliver a fatal blow to each other in their last fight before the Dark Lord is resurrected.
  • One-Winged Angel: His final form is a horrendous spider man, which he shows during his final battle against Iruga.
  • Playing with Fire: Magnum Break.
  • Poisoned Weapons: His sword is coated with incurable poison.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives these out pretty regularly. Even to other villains.
  • The Tease: Whenever him and Jiltus have some sort of spat, he gets a little more than touchy with her at times.
  • Together in Death: With Iruga.

Jiltus

Voiced by: Mariko Suzuki (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/102783.jpg
A half-monster girl. She was shunned by humans, which is why she has a cynical view towards humans.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Towards Maya and Takius. She flogs them relentlessly. She is later involved in turning Alice into a horrifying monster, which deals a lot of pain to Alice and Maya (emotionally).
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Because she is half-monster, when she is playing outside her hut, some humans come to throw rocks at her. Her mother then comes to protect her, only to receive a rock to her head. This angers Jiltus to the point she unleashes her power to reflect the rocks and injure the humans. Her mother then tells her to stop, but this results in both of them getting kicked out of the village.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Maya chooses to spare her and give her a second chance as Alice's spirit requested. Unfortunately, not long after the Heel–Face Turn, she sacrifices herself for Maya. Then, in the last episode, her spirit appears and guides Maya to defeat Dark Lord, her former boss.
  • Motive Rant: Jiltus frequently clashes with Keough in terms of how they execute their own Evil Plan.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Being a dominatrix, this posture is a given.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She likes people showing fear in their faces.
  • Pet the Dog: She sees one and smiles when sees Maya being comforted by Alice. However, she snaps herself out of it, and insists that Humans Are the Real Monsters due to her mistreatment by many of them.

Zephyr

Voiced by: Nachi Nozawa (Japanese), Mark Stoddard (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/298750.jpg
A Wizard. He is Takius' mentor. He fell into Dark Lord's manipulation because of his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Blood Knight: He takes pleasure in blasting monsters with his magic.
  • Black Mage: Emphasizes on fire.
  • Curbstomp Battle: His only battle that lasts long and manages to kill him is the battle against Takius. Everything else is quick and simple
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was once a scientist, but because of his failed experiment, he lost his family.
  • Death from Above: He can summon meteors.
  • Super-Reflexes: He's old, but he easily dodges Judia's Arrow Shower. Not even Iruga can touch him.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Candy cane. It's even his weapon!
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After he delivers a Curb-Stomp Battle to Takius, he finds out that the Dark Lord has other things planned for him. One of the Dark Lord's archers appears, and shoots Zephyr while he's gloating over Takius. His soul is then claimed by the Dark Lord to help his resurrection.

    Others

Baphomet

Voiced by: Mugihito (Japanese), Cole Brown (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/102784.jpg
A gigantic goat-like being who is very powerful, but holds the policy of repaying kindness with kindness.
  • Curbstomp Battle: He fights a group of six people, but none of them can even hurt him. Subverted in a flashback of his battle against Iruga and Keough, in which Iruga managed to injure his left eye.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Though he's a monster, and gets into some fights with the main characters, he seems to have some sense of right and wrong. He destroys the mirror that the Dark Lord is sealed in after Roan and the others defeat him.
  • The Dreaded: Due to his size and immense strength, he is justifiably feared when the main characters run into him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Though he has no real love for adventurers, he spares a fight with the main characters in the clock tower because Judia rescued his son after he got stuck in one of the clock's gears.
  • Gentle Giant: He looks scary at the first glance, but he has his own ethics, which is shown after finding out that Judia has rescued his son.
  • Good All Along: Though he's antagonistic towards the main characters and humans in general, he despises the Dark Lord even more. When Roan and the others manage to seal him back up, Baphomet secretly destroys the mirror the Dark Lord was trapped in to prevent his escape again.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Daddy but he still has a child, which is a surprise.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: He doesn't fight to the fullest in battles. Instead, he toys with his opponents.

Alice

Voiced by: Saki Nakajima (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_m8j6mv5szb1rbi60go1_500.jpg
A girl dressed in maid's attire. She is actually a monster, and Jiltus is later involved in transforming her into a horrifying monster.
  • Morality Chain: To Alice. She stops Alice from killing Jiltus while she's overcome with grief and unable to fight back. Instead she encourages Alice to forgive her instead.

Wolyafa

Voiced by:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pet1308.png
  • Anti-Villain: She's not really evil, just a lonely kid who doesn't know right from wrong.
