"I don't mind anymore! The only reason I wanted to be human was to make friends! I'm fine being a monster for Luffy's sake!"
—Chapter 642

Tony Tony Chopper is a reindeer from Drum Island made sentient by eating the Human-Human Fruit (Hito Hito no Mi). Originally exiled from his herd for having a blue nose and being feared by the people of Drum Island as a monster after eating his Devil Fruit, he found acceptance and friendship with his mentor Dr. Hiriluk who tragically died after passing onto him a passion for medicine, if not actual skill. He then went under the tutelage of Dr. Kureha to actually learn being a doctor. Although he initially mistrusted humans, after meeting and joining the Straw Hat Pirates, he has become very curious about the world and is eager to please.

Although Chopper is nearly always seen in his hybrid form, small and weak, he's not exactly a wimp when it comes to fighting. In his most humanlike form, he's quite tall and very strong. He's also developed a powerful drug named the Rumble Ball which once eaten allows him to transform into seven forms with their own strengths and weakness. By consuming three Rumble Balls, he can transform into his gigantic and powerful Monster Form at the cost of going berserk. Upon improving control over his Devil Fruit during the Time Skip, he doesn't need the Rumble Balls to transform into most his forms save for needing one to use Monster Form.

Chopper is a proficient physician, and his dream is to become a doctor capable of curing all disease due to his accidentally hastening the death of his already sickly father-figure Dr. Hiriluk. He also resolves to prove himself as a man worthy of being a pirate, which sometimes seems at odds with his child-like behavior and gullible personality. During the Time Skip, he researches plants at Birdie Kingdom to improve his medical skills and trains to improve his combat abilities.

His bounty is a measly 1,000 berries.note  He holds two dubious "records" for his bounties.note

    A-K
  • Adaptational Badass: Most video games (especially the Pirate Warriors series) put at least half his attacks in Brain Point, which has almost no combat ability in Canon.
  • Affectionate Nickname: After asking her to show him respect for his genius, Carrot starts calling him "Cho-niki" (a play on the Japanese word for brother and interpreted as "ChoBro" in the English version) out of respect/affection.
  • Acrofatic: His Kung Fu point is quite heavyset, but is agile enough to perform fancy flips and kicks.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Literally, being a send-up of Rudolph. He was secluded by his herd even before eating the Human-Human Fruit because of his blue nose. What caused the herd to finally exile him was when he ate the Devil Fruit.
  • The Apprentice: He was taught medicine by Dr. Hiriluk and Dr. Kureha during his time on Drum Island.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Chopper is the youngest Straw Hat member and is treated like a younger surrogate brother to the older members, especially Zoro, Sanji and Robin. This gets flipped all around by his 'baby geezer' form resulting from his improved Rumble Ball's side effect. When his Monster Point runs out, Chopper is turned into a physical baby version of himself but with the mind and mannerisms of a stereotypical old-man, making him simultaneously older and younger than he actually is.
  • Badass Adorable: Small, kind, insanely huggable, but very strong nonetheless. Too bad for him, the Marines only notice the "adorable" part, hence his small bounty.
  • Badass Bookworm: Being the doctor of the crew, Chopper possesses a vast knowledge of both medicine and medical drugs as well as the preparations of most remedies and ointments ranging from regular fruits, roots, and vegetables that can be found and used on most islands. He is also capable of administering surgery and resuscitation.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Justified since he has hooves. The only time he wears shoes is in Strong World, when the Straw Hats perform their Big Damn Heroes moment by bursting into the stronghold of the movie's Big Bad Shiki, dressed like the mafia, and completely armed to the teeth with guns.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: How Chopper was able to sell his completely worthless disguise in Episode 198. By actually knowing what the hell he was talking about during the medical emergency, the military nurses professionalism was used against them. Then again, they had other concerns than questioning why a sasquatch looking thing wearing what constitutes as Groucho Marx glasses was giving them orders.
  • Beast Man: In his Heavy Point, Chopper is bulky and hairy, to the point that in this form many mistake him for a gorilla. His Monster Point plays up the 'beast' aspect more, being a visually intimidating towering humanoid monster covered in shaggy hair.
  • Beautiful All Along: Played for laughs in the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre — Red-Hair of Class 3"; he was depicted as a monstrous-looking problem student and a bully who coerced students into giving him cotton candy... but his "secret" is that he's actually a cute reindeer, much to Shanks' shock.
  • Berserk Button: Being confused for another animal, which is almost Chopper's designated Running Gag. It evolves from something he's frustrated over to being a legitimate button someone can press by the time of Wano, where literally everyone he meets assumes he's a Tanuki. When given a hostile target to vent his frustrations on, he goes Monster Point and hits Queen, one of Kaido's three strongest subordinates, hard enough to knock him over in a show of power that spooks everyone watching into making a mental note to not call him a Tanuki again.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He becomes quite protective of the children on Punk Hazard, especially Mocha, after learning of the medical horrors inflicted on them by Caesar Clown to turn them into giants with short lifespans.
  • Bishōnen Line: His Horn Point form looks notably more human after the time-skip. Although Luffy calls him a beetle due to the horns.
  • Brainy Brunette: A variety. He has brown fur and is the crew's doctor, has a vast knowledge of medicine and is skilled enough that he has made special medicine balls to power up his Devil Fruit ability or even make cure for new diseases.
  • Breakout Character: Chopper ends up becoming the series' mascot, with most of the series' merchandise being Chopper related and getting his own spin-off and movie.
  • Broken Pedestal: When he first meets Dr. Hogback, Chopper admires him for being such a skilled doctor and is unwilling to believe that he's connected to Moria. But after hearing from Hogback his story and motivations, Chopper declares he's no longer worthy of being called a doctor.
  • Brutal Honesty: He doesn't sugarcoat to Mocha that she and the other children are going to die because of the "treatment" (actually gigantification) and "candies" (actually drugs) before they would become grown-ups unless they manage to get out of Punk Hazard in order to get proper treatment to reverse the gigantification.
  • Character Development: After the timeskip, Chopper seems to have grown more confident. He no longer strives to be looked at as a human, now only wanting to "be a monster that can help Luffy" as he put it. He even has grown mature enough to smack his crewmates, mostly Zoro and Luffy, when they try to do something stupid or extreme. He also seems to have outgrown many of his comedic habits, but his habit of peeking still remains.
  • Cherry Blossoms: A part of his arc, introduction, personalised jolly roger and even incorporated into some of his attack names, as his cloven hoofs, especially in Arm Point, can cause Sakura petal-like imprints in foes from how hard he's hitting them.
  • Child-Like Voice: His diminutive stature, teddy-bear like appearance and overall timid and impressionable disposition are well-complemented by a very boyish voice, both in Japanese and both English dubs.
  • Close-Range Combatant: The nature of his shapeshifting makes Chopper a very capable physical combatant, especially since he can change forms to suit the given situation. He also displays some rudimentary knowledge of hand-to-hand combat like performing wrestling maneuvers or learning Kung Fu over the timeskip.
  • Close to Home: Due to being a trained doctor, Chopper despise a selfish, if not evil, use of medicine and science and directly opposes any evil doctor/scientist he encounters.
    • In the Thriller Bark arc, when Chopper finds his former role model, Dr. Hogback, uses his anatomical knowledge to stitch together and reanimate his dead crush to keep her as his undead slave, he loses all respect for the wicked doctor.
    • In the Punk Hazard arc Chopper acts as the good contrast to Caesar Clown: when he finds out how the abducted children are being treated and experimented on, he gets personally pissed at the scientist.
    • In the Wano arc, Chopper gets enraged at Queen for his Koori Oni virus, stating that those who do so are bound to lose control of them eventually.
  • Combat Medic: He's the crew's doctor, and has no problems contributing to the fights.
  • Cowardly Lion: He can be a scaredy-cat at times. Once push comes to shove, however...
    • He spends a large part of Skypiea fearful of encountering any opponents, but then puts up a valiant fight against Gedatsu, one of Eneru's top enforcers, and wins the battle all on his own.
    • He seems a lot more self-assure after the Time Skip; he faces down a particularly vicious Shark Fish-man without losing his confident grin for a second, and is very hands-on throughout Punk Hazard in order to protect the captive children.
    • Luffy putting a target on the crew's back for one of the Four Emperors proves too much even for the new Chopper. Though by the end of the Wano Arc, Chopper has fought several of Kaido and Big Mom's top brass and lived to tell about it.
  • Crossdressing Voices: Being a Ridiculously Cute Critter, naturally he's voiced by women.
  • Cute Bruiser: Played with; Chopper is very cute in his standard form (brain point), but he's also a very powerful fighter. However, his other, less cute forms are much more suited for combat.
  • The Cutie: He's a cute, sweet and oh-so gullible little reindeer who the Straw Hats are immediately endeared to upon first meeting him. Even the grumpy Zoro and the aloof Robin show a very protective side around Chopper. Robin in particular adopts a very motherly demeanor towards Chopper, spending a lot of time with him when she first joins and being a frequent source of comfort for him.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: After eating three Rumble Balls Chopper transforms into his Monster Point, which is a tremendously powerful berserker form in which Chopper loses control of his body, and it takes a dangerous amount of energy to maintain; if he doesn't end up dying, he'll be paralyzed from the neck down for several minutes, possibly a few hours. Kureha, upon witnessing it for the first time, forbid Chopper to ever transform into his Monster Point. Chopper knowingly uses it when he's on the brink of defeat against Kumadori, having already used up two Rumble Balls; it's the only option he has left to keep from getting killed. In the Fishman Island Arc, after seeing Chopper in his monstrous form, Usopp cries that the situation hasn't reached a point for Chopper to lose control of himself... before Chopper reveals he is in control. However, the form is only slightly less of a last resort; in exchange for keeping his senses, the change only lasts for three minutes, and he's still paralyzed from exhaustion when time runs out.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Chopper was ostracized for his blue nose, and kicked out of his herd after eating the Human-Human Fruit. He was also rejected by Drum Kingdom's humans as a monster. The only human who cared for him was a quack doctor named Dr. Hiriluk. Being trained as a doctor, he got confused by the skull-and-crossbones, which Hiriluk described as a symbol of strength for pirates, but in medical terms meant certain death. As a result, he accidentally fatally poisoned Dr. Hiriluk. So his father-figure walked into a trap set by Drum's King, Wapol, and committed suicide.note
  • Deadly Doctor:
    • He developed a drug specifically to be used for battle, albeit only on himself.
    • He uses his anatomical knowledge to tell the other Straw Hats exactly what they need to do to break Oars' spine.
    • Aside from the above, he's not much for using medical skills/equipment in battle... except in videogames, where hurling vials with toxic (or explosive) chemicals is usually one of his basic attacks.
  • Deadly Upgrade: The Rumble Balls give him access to four extra forms (in addition to his default three) for a period of three minutes. If he takes two within six hours, he loses control of his transformations. If he takes three, he ends up in "Monster Point", an uncontrollable beast who is a danger to his comrades and himself. During the timeskip, he advanced his Rumble Ball and control over it to the point where he can now safely use Monster Point for three minutes, but is still drained for two to three hours afterward. Later, as revealed in Wano, he upgrades it again en route to Dressrosa with Caesar Clown's help, increasing the time limit to half an hour but with added risks.
  • The Determinator: He won't let anybody die on his watch, especially a friend. If you need a life-saving treatment and he can provide it, Chopper does not take no for an answer. Olga Myskina from the Heart of Gold special learned this all too well.
  • Ditzy Genius: He's a doctor who really knows his craft, and is by all means a genius. But his naivete makes him prone to simple-minded errors, and he's even more excitable than Luffy (he believes Usopp's tall tales, for one). It's so bad that he couldn't tell the Fake Straw Hats were imposters right away.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite being a powerful pirate in his own right, the Marines mistake Chopper for simply being the Straw Hats' Team Pet and gave him a laughably small bounty as a result. His bounty of fifty, then one-hundred, Berries causes him great shame, and anytime it's brought up, he has either a rare, amusing Heroic BSoD, or he curls up in his Corner of Woe. Even his own crewmates call him "emergency rations" on occasion.
I fought like a true man back there! I'm a pirate just like all the rest of you! And what do they mean by "pet"?! I'm a doctor, darn it! *dissolves into incoherent babbling*
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: One of the most notable examples. Just compare Chopper not long after he joined to how he looks in the Emperor Saga.
  • Easily Impressed: He's just as easy to impress by silly things as Luffy, if not more. He listens to Usopp's tall tales with glee and is ecstatic at all of Franky's robotic inventions.
  • Emergency Food Supply Animal: Sanji jokes at first about him being their emergency rations, which comes back into play 686 issues later when, without Sanji to cook for them, Luffy is starving, and Luffy's subsequent attempt to cook results in crew-wide food poisoning (and Luffy trying to eat Chopper in his starvation), and everyone begging Sanji to come back to them.
  • Enemy Scan: Brain Point gives him the power to scan for his enemy's weak points. He uses it less and less over time.
  • The Exile: He was exiled from his herd after eating the Human-Human Fruit.
  • Expy: Chopper, particularly his backstory, is inspired by Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, being a reindeer whose unusual nose led to his exile from the herd (in Chopper's case, the nose is simply blue). Chopper was also rejected by humans due to his monstrous looking human form, and found acceptance only by Hiriluk, Kureha and finally the Straw Hats.
  • Funny Animal: In his Walk Point, which is also his original form, Chopper is a normal reindeer that can talk like a human and wears shorts and a hat.
  • Funny Bruce Lee Noises: When using his Kung Fu Point, chopper makes many high-pitched noises to emphasize his martial arts-like fighting style.
  • Genius Bruiser: With the combination of his incredible intellect and form swapping, Chopper can analyze then take down his opponents with ease, and displays potent tactical prowess.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: Chopper is an accomplished doctor, at 15, and loves anything sweet, especially cotton candy.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: When Hatchan accidentally reveals himself as a Fish-man when trying to help save Camie from being sold as a slave, the audience starts to throw objects at poor Hatchan, to which Nami states the crowds' reason behind doing so is because they despise all Fish-men. Upon hearing this Chopper's only response is to ask why since undersea dwellers like Hatchan and Camie are not any different from people. Chopper just cannot understand the mindset of the racist aristocrats and does not want to.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: In Totto Land arc, after Carrot knocks over the cauldron and splashes Brulee's group, causing chaos, he slips out of his chains, munches on a Rumble Ball, goes Monster Point and immediately grabs the giant talking crocodile guy who he then uses to smash the others.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: In his first outfit, Chopper wear shorts but not shirts. He wears a jacket in Enies Lobby, but no shirt under. Averted since the time skip, from which he tends to be fully clothed.
  • Happily Adopted: By Dr. Hiruluk first and then Dr. Kureha next. Both doctors openly proclaim that he is their son and how proud they are of him (although in Kureha's case, it's only said in confidence to Dalton).
  • Happy Dance: When a human flatters him with a compliment, Chopper tries to put up a front that he doesn't need patronizing comments from them, but he relishes the praise and starts doing a swaying dance with his mouth hanging open in a gawky smile (a Shout-Out to Ken Shimura's "Dirty Old Man Dance") that reveals his inner happiness.
  • Holiday Motif: Chopper has a bit of a Christmas motif, being a talking outcast reindeer with a funny colored nose, pulling his master's sleigh around, and being born on December 24th.
  • Honor Before Reason: One time when Gedatsu drowned one of his enforcers with his swamp cloud attack, Chopper felt duty-bound as a doctor to save him. This did involve going into Heavy Point and beating on his chest.
  • Hour of Power: Chopper invented a special drug called Rumble Ball that allows him to change into additional forms, each with a special ability. However, the rumble ball effects lasts only for three minutes. During the time-skip, Chopper learns to change into his additional forms without Rumble Ball, and needs it only to turn into his Monster Point. With Caesar Clown's help, the Rumble Ball's effect is raised to thirty minutes but leaves Chopper into a weak form afterwards.
  • Humanity Ensues: He used to be just a regular reindeer until eating a Devil Fruit that made him anthropomorphic. Unfortunately, it doesn't turn him fully human but into a yeti-like beast at best, which caused him to be avoided by both humans and reindeers.
  • I Am Not Weasel: A Running Gag of the series is people mistaking Chopper's Brain Point for a tanuki. Even some of his other forms are mistaken for other animals, like his Heavy Point form for a gorilla and his new Horn Point makes Luffy think he's a stag beetle. Chopper never likes being mistaken for another animal, and this gag reaches a breaking point during the Wano arc, where Queen, the Pleasures and the Waiters, the rebellion forces, and Marco all call him a tanuki. Already enraged at Queen for having used medical knowledge to make bio-weapons, Chopper changes into his Monster Point and slaps brachiosaurus form Queen in the face while yelling that he's not a tanuki. Everyone proceeds to guiltily cover their mouths and mentally apologize to Chopper for it.
  • Iconic Outfit: Chopper distinguishable feature is his pink hat, given to him by Doctor Hiriluk. It is carried over the time-skip, although with a light blue cap over it.
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: In the English dub, Chopper pulls this with Luffy over being categorized as a "pet" by the World Government with his paltry first bounty after the Enies Lobby incident.
  • In a Single Bound: His Jumping Point form, which greatly increases his jumping ability.
  • Informed Attribute: The Human-Human fruit does grant the user humanlike intelligence and a bipedal transformation, but it can't actually make them fully human. Chopper's "human" transformation still retains his fur and blue nose, making him look more like a yeti, and so he can't fully immerse himself as a human.
  • Informed Species: While it’s pretty easy to tell Chopper is a deer, it’s a bit harder to tell he’s specifically a reindeer, what with his lighter colors and simpler antlers resembling a white-tailed deer more even in his more animalistic Horn Point and Walk Point forms, the latter supposedly his “true form”. Downplayed a bit post timeskip as while his fur stays the same color, his Horn Point and Walk Point designs do gain the signature curved antlers of a caribou.
  • Intellectual Animal: At age 17, the Doogie Howser, M.D. of intellectual animals.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: Inadvertently became one and Oda decided to ramp up his Chibi qualities to accentuate his cuteness even more.
  • Kiddie Kid: He's 15, and only a couple years younger than Luffy, but he can also be very childish and extremely gullible. It may involve that he was 8-years-old when he ate the Human-Human Fruit (his hybrid form has not changed, but his reindeer form has grown up).
    L-Y
  • Last-Name Basis: Vivi calls him "Tony-kun" from his last name.
  • Leitmotif: Chopper Eyecatcher.
  • Lethal Joke Character: The Marines consider him a pet and gave him a microscopic bounty, despite him being an extremely capable and destructive fighter.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Chopper's Kung Fu Point is a fighting form he developed over the Time-Skip and combines the previous Arm Point 's strength and Jumping Point 's agility.
  • Like a Son to Me: Dr. Kureha secretly refers to him as "my stupid son" when he leaves Drum Island.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Like Dr. Kureha, he struggles with giving and accepting compliments. Albeit he's way less aggressive about it, given that Kureha never openly complimented his growing skill as a doctor, and literally chased him off with her stash of ornamental weaponry when he left, but obviously respected his skill and cared about him (and still does – after he left, she referred to him as "my stupid son").
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: His blue nose and Devil Fruit caused him to be shunned by his own herd, and after Hiriluk and Kureha took him in, he still had no friends until he met the Straw Hats.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His Guard Point form, which grows thick fur that acts as a cushion against attacks.
  • Mars Needs Women: Notable for its aversion. As stated by Oda, Chopper is still a reindeer, so he does not feel any physical attraction towards human women. When he does finally develop a crush, it is on a Reindeer mink, a woman who resembles a cross of a human and a reindeer.
  • Mascots Love Sugar: He is known in-universe for his love of sweets, earning the epithet "Cotton Candy Lover".
  • The Medic: Chopper's role in the crew is the doctor and, whenever a Straw Hat is sick or heavily injured, he's the one who takes care of him/her.
  • Mighty Glacier: His Heavy Point, Arm Point and Monster Point forms are very strong and tough physically, but much slower compared to other forms.
  • Morality Pet: To Robin and Zoro, the two most stoic members of the crew. Robin bonds with Chopper very quickly after doing her damndest trying to dispel his image of her being really scary, and she generally has his welfare in mind during battle. She also becomes really pissed at Franky after Franky talks with his regular potty mouth and scowl in Chopper's Body. While threatening Chopper is the easiest way to get the protective side out Zoro.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Sported some impressive guns in his Pre-Timeskip Arm Point form, and true to his appearance, his strength was the real deal while using it. His Post-Timeskip Heavy Point, meanwhile, now looks like the Incredible Hulk and is able to match the power of a giant Fish-man's hammer swing with a punch.
  • My Greatest Failure: When his mentor/father figure Dr. Hiriluk fell ill, Chopper tried to nurse him back to health. He only succeeded in getting him killed. Possibly subverted. Apparently, Dr. Hiriluk knew the mushroom was poisonous, but used it anyway to hasten his death, as he had a terminal illness, in addition to making his adoptive "son" feel good about himself. Then he blew himself up at Wapol's castle before the mushroom or Wapol's men could kill him.
  • Necessary Drawback: Chopper's Monster Point is his strongest form, but it always comes with a drawback that prevents him from being overpowered:
    • Before the Time Skip, accessing the form requires Chopper to overdose on Rumble Balls. While in this state, Chopper is a mindless rampaging beast; on top of that, he cannot turn it off by himself, and the strain would eventually kill him unless someone forces him to revert back.
    • After the timeskip, Monster Point requires only one Rumble Ball, and Chopper remains in full control the entire time. The tradeoff is that the form forcibly deactivates after three minutes, and leaves him severely exhausted afterwards.
    • Chopper gets a second upgrade courtesy of Caesar Clown. This extends Monster Point's duration to 30 minutes, but locks him into a Fun Size form for an unspecified amount of time afterwards.
  • Never Bareheaded: Chopper always wears his pink hat which he received from doctor Hiriluk, as a sign of affection toward his foster father. After the time-skip, Chopper wears a bonnet on top of his old hat; sometimes he changes his headgear, like a samurai helmet during the raid at Onigashima, but his head is never exposed.
  • Nice Guy: After working past his suspicions of others, Chopper proves to be the nicest Straw Hat, lacking any anti-heroic traits and is routinely one of the kindest characters in the series, showing compassion towards anyone and helping any sick person he sees.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: In SBS Vol. 47, a reader wanted to know why Chopper wasn't interested in women when at the time he was, proportionately, 15. Oda, in one of the few times he's answered seriously, says that Chopper isn't interested in naked human women because he's still a reindeer, the Human-Human Fruit just upped his intelligence without doing anything to his physiology. Granted, he can fall in love with a human on an intellectual level, he just wouldn't be aroused by them. This is then demonstrated during the Zou arc, where he becomes smitten with a Reindeer Mink.
  • Offended by an Enemy's Indifference: A Running Gag throughout the series is that his bounties tend to be extremely low because the Marines think he's just a pet. Since pirates see a high bounty as a status symbol, Chopper is naturally upset that the World Government doesn't consider him a threat.
  • Out of Focus: Chopper, Sanji, Nami, and Brook during the second half of the Dressrosa Arc. They were absent from the story for more than a year and a half in the real world before reappearing (from December 2013 to July 2015).
  • Parental Abandonment: Herd abandonment, to be exact. Already disliked for his abnormal blue nose, when he accidentally ate a Devil Fruit and turned into a human-reindeer hybrid, they cast him out of the group — Chopper's exact parentage among them is never elaborated upon, but if his parents were among the group, the relationship had to be really ugly. Chopper later confronted the leader of the herd in a violent and nearly lethal confrontation that netted him a broken horn and leg, so we know there is no love to be found with them.
  • Partial Transformation: His regular form (Brain Point), the miniature humanoid with antlers, is technically his hybrid human/reindeer form. His true form, of course, is as a real reindeer (Walk Point).
  • Power Fist: In Arm Point, as its name implies, his arms becomes much more muscular and stronger, giving him the strongest attacks of all his forms save Monster Point.
    • One of the databooks explains that another reason why Arm Point is so strong is because Chopper keeps his hooves in this form. Therefore, the power of his punches is concentrated in a small point, to devastating effect.
  • Randomized Transformation: Taking two Rumble Balls in a six hour time frame will cause his body to start shifting between his various forms without any conscious control. It's unclear if this still applies with the improved versions of the drug post-Time Skip.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His ultimate technique in Arm Point, "Cherry Blossom Blizzard", is a series of rapid attacks.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Chopper's main color scheme is pink and he always wears his trademark pink hat, even when he's in his bulky human form.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: His cuteness, and the fact they've never seen him in combat, is the very reason why the Marines underestimates him and give him a pathetically low bounty.
  • Running Gag:
    • Chopper's completely unable to hide behind corners; he hides backwards so only half of his head is hidden and the rest of his body is exposed.
    • When somebody gets injured, Chopper has a tendency to call for a doctor, only for someone nearby to remind him that he's the doctor.
    • When complimented, he acts like a tsundere and says it doesn't affect him, while doing a happy dance that totally shows how he really feels.
    • He's often mistaken for a tanuki, much to his dismay.
  • Save the Villain: As a doctor, Chopper will give medical treatment to whoever he can no matter what side they are on. During a few arcs when bad guys with large crews decide to indiscriminately attack both friend and foe with biological weapons, Chopper using his medical knowledge will whip up a cure and give it to everyone, often earning a good number of allies who are grateful toward that reindeer doctor.
  • Screaming Warrior: He hollers and screams like Bruce Lee while in Kung Fu Point.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: His typical chibi/child like appearance it's actually his hybrid form, not his original appeareance; this means Chopper's Devil Fruit ability is used constantly, even when he's sleeping or is knocked out. Interestingly, as seen through the Time Skip, it's the only form of his that doesn't age. Since Chopper has full control of his transformation, has shown with the Time Skip, while his reindeer form gets older, his hybrid form remains the same.
  • Shrinking Violet: When first introduced, Chopper is incredibly shy around new people, and it takes him a bit to finally approach Nami and the Straw Hats, despite the former being his patient at the time. After befriending Luffy and joining the crew though, his timidness doesn't quite go away but he's much more eager to interact with others.
  • Signature Headgear: Chopper constantly wears a pink hat with a white cross, given to him by Dr. Hiriluk. The white cross symbolizes his medic skills while the pink color connects him to the cherry tree petals, which are strongly associated with Dr. Hiriluk. After the time-skip, Chopper keeps the same hat while wearing a blue one over it.
  • Slasher Smile: He sports this almost immediately after using Monster Point for the first time after the Time Skip on Fish-Man Island. It's an Inversion, fortunately, because it's to inform Usopp (and the audience) he's in control and can now distinguish between friend and foe.
  • So Last Season:
    • While his Rumble Ball transformations are fairly versatile, they get noticeably less and less effective as the series goes on. After the timeskip, he doesn't even need the Rumble Ball for most of his forms anymore.
    • He has not used Scope Point for the longest time now, ever since Skypiea, because the need to use it hasn't been paramount.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • In his first Monster Point rampage, Chopper indirectly helps his crewmates several times. He throws Kalifa's bathtub – this alerts Nami to the Bubble-Bubble Fruit's weakness to water and also turns Sanji back to normal. Then he interrupts Zoro and Sniper King's fight with Kaku and Jabra, bringing Nami enough time to get the handcuffs off them.
    • Chopper becomes a Spanner in the Wano arc, where he discovers Big Mom washed up on the shore and takes her directly to the prison where Luffy is being held, which winds up destroying a large portion of the prison and causing a revolt, thereby securing thousands of allies and weapons for the rebellion against Kaido.
    • Following the Heart Pirates' defeat to the Blackbeard Pirates, Law would have been killed with his Devil Fruit power in their hands if it weren't for Chopper giving Bepo a drug to help transform him into his Sulong form without the full moon. As a result, Bepo fends off Blackbeard in his Sulong form and escape with Law thanks to Chopper's generosity.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Chopper can talk to animals due to being an animal himself.
  • Species Surname: The "surname" portion of his full name, "Tony Tony", comes from "tonakai", the Japanese for "reindeer".
  • The Strategist: Showing off some of his newfound maturity after the timeskip, he remains calm and comes up with an ingenious Batman Gambit to defeat Charlotte Brûlée along with Carrot, which he prides himself in greatly.
  • Stone Wall: Guard Point makes him almost invincible but he can't attack in said form.
  • Super-Deformed: A result of his Art Evolution; his head becomes rounder and larger than his body (which lost its original chubbiness), and his muzzle, at first large enough to conceal his mouth when it isn't moving, it barely sticks out from his face afterwards
  • Super Doc: Chopper ultimately aspires a doctor who can cure any disease, thus he works and tries to learn as many medical skills as possible.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Like everyone with Devil Fruit powers, Chopper is unable to move in sea water. He likes to jump in the water to save Luffy, forgetting that he can't swim either.
  • Super Gullible: Chopper believes just about anything he hears. He always falls for Usopp's stories and is the only one other than Luffy who was fooled by his Sogeking disguise. He even believes Nami when she lies to Lola about being a man.
  • Super-Intelligence: Chopper's hybrid form is called "Brain Point" because it combines his human form's intelligence with his animal form's natural instincts for the most optimal thinking.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Monster Point is Chopper's most powerful transformation, brought on by using three Rumble Ball transformations in a short period of time. It's not so much malicous as it is an uncontrollable monster that attacks everybody. It takes a whole timeskip for Chopper to learn how to control it, albeit only for three minutes.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: After he's separated from the crew by Kuma, he believes that he has been marooned on an island filled with illiterate savages. Then he discovers they have a library full of extensive medical knowledge and loudly proclaims that they aren't as primitive as he believed... while the one that guided him there is standing a few feet away.
  • Sweet Tooth: Following his childish personality, Chopper likes anything sweet, but especially cotton candy, hence his nickname.
  • Swiss-Army Hero: Each form Chopper turns into has its advantages and disadvantages, and his combat style relies on him shifting between each one at the correct time.
  • Talking Animal: His Devil Fruit gives him the intelligence and abilities of a human. Maybe even moreso, considering he was an experienced doctor at age 15.
  • Tap on the Head: When he was with Dr. Kureha, she had him give patients concussions as a form of anesthetic.
  • Team Pet: What the Marines assume him to be, hence his ridiculously low bounty of 50 Berries. He'd probably have a much higher one if they took him seriously.
  • Teen Genius: He was already an accomplished surgeon, physician, hematologist, and chemist (remember, he manufactured the Rumble Balls) at fifteen years old, and he's even more skilled at 17. Later on, he also proves himself a good strategist in combat situations.
  • Tender Tears: Being a bit of a scaredy-cat, and very, very cute, he tends to cry big, sentimental tears. He seems to have to gotten over this Post-Time Skip.
  • Token Mini-Moe: The youngest and smallest (the latter by far) of the Straw Hats. He's the only one to not be at least average height in his typical form. Ironically, his devil fruit can actually make him the biggest and the tallest of the crew whe he's in his Monster Point. After the Time Skip, his improved forms are both generally taller and stronger than they were two years ago, with the exception of Brain Point. Heavy Point alone is only slightly smaller than the size of Franky's new body.
  • Token Non-Human: Chopper, a reindeer, and Jimbei, a fishman, are the only non-human members of the crew, though the Human-Human Fruit gives Chopper the ability to turn into a human-like form and human intelligence.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: His Heavy Point after the Timeskip is more monstrous than the previous one because Chopper wanted to develop a more combat-oriented form, which has more muscular arms and larger shoulders, but the legs have remained the same.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cotton candy. In the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre — Red-Hair of Class 3", he was even depicted as a bully who coerced his fellow students into giving him cotton candy.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The hat he wears was given to him by the deceased Dr. Hiriluk, the only one to have initially accepted Chopper and who was a mentor and father figure to him. In his Post-Timeskip appearance, Chopper wears a round cap above it.
  • Tsundere:
    • He's quite standoffish when first meeting the Straw Hats, but when he receives praise, he responds with jovial insults while waving his arms cutely or doing a happy dance. Nami lampshades it by saying he's the kind of guy who just can't hide his feelings. It's rooted in his initial distrust of humans conflicting with his happiness over the praise.
    • At the beginning of episode 128, the royal doctor of Alabasta hung a lampshade on it when he "translated" Chopper's insults as gratitude.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Because of his naive and immature nature, cute appearance, and the fact he's unconscious for most of the Enies Lobby arc, the Marines think of Chopper as the pet mascot of the crew and assign him a bounty of mere 50 berries, which later gets updated to a still minuscule 100 berries, both of which are the lowest bounties seen in the series. Chopper's hybrid Zoan form (his appearance most of the time) is also uniquely the only hybrid form in the entire series which is smaller than either his natural form or his Zoan transformation, which leads many to underestimate his considerable strengths - which are: Chopper is quite powerful naturally as a reindeer, with the physical potential and fighting techniques of a human, his strength is further enhanced by his Zoan Devil Fruit, which he has mastered to give himself more transformations than other Zoan users, and in his Monster Point form he gains strength akin to an Awakened Zoan (without the recovery rate) or the Mink's Sulong.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: This, along with the Rumble Ball's limited duration, is what keeps him in the "weakling trio" with Nami and Usopp in the early series. He's got super strength in several of his battle forms, but he wasn't trained in any combat styles and his battle plan amounted to: 1. Aim fist and 2. Smack a face. Subverted after the Time Skip when he's shown to have become very proficient in kung fu. Chopper has also since been proven capable of emphasising the "strong" part far more, in both surviving a slugfest with Big Mom despite having no Haki and easily dealing a heavy blow to Queen, who is one of Kaido's strongest fighters, possibly graduating him from the "weakling trio" in the process, though this was only in Monster Point after he'd upgraded it with Caesar Clown's unwilling help, and that level of strength came with drawbacks.
  • Uplifted Animal: Eating the Human-Human Fruit gave him human intelligence, as well as the ability to take on two different humanoid forms.
  • Vocal Dissonance:
    • Chopper keeps his high voice regardless of whether he's in his adorable chibi form or his badass battle forms.
    • Averted in the 4Kids dub, where Chopper in his huge humanoid form sounds rather manly indeed.
    • Also averted with Monster Point post-time skip where his voice is digitally lowered to sound deep.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Chopper's primary fighting style relies on his hybridization and augmentation of human and reindeer parts. After the Time Skip, he no longer needs the Rumble ball for six of his transformations.
  • Wendigo: With its enormous size, thick, shaggy fur coat, crown of antlers, and indiscriminate bloodlust (until the time-skip), Monster Point is clearly modeled after this monster.
  • Wingding Eyes: He develops a crush on a Reindeer Mink named Milky, getting heart eyes whenever he talks to her.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Chopper occasionally performs some pro wrestling maneuvers while in Heavy Point, once notably putting Zoro in a Boston Crab. In Thriller Bark, he teams up with Robin (who likes to do submission holds) to perform an aerial suplex on Doctor Hogback.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Zoan users have three transformations: their default form, an animal hybrid, and a full animal form. Thanks to his Rumble Balls though, Chopper has seven transformations that mix the strengths and weaknesses of his default three forms, which surprises even people who are used to fighting Devil Fruit users. Then there is what happens if he eats three Rumble Balls within six hours, which turns him into a giant beast that destroys everything in his path. After the Time-Skip, Chopper can naturally access six of his forms without the Rumble Ball, as well as control the Monster Point which activates by eating just one Rumble Ball.
  • Younger Than They Look. Not his typical child-like form (Brain Point), which is a case of Older Than They Look, but his Heavy Point transformation takes on the appearance of a grown man rather than a 15/17 year old. May be Justified due to Reindeers having different lifespans than humans.
