Brighton Family

    As a whole
  • Adaptation Expansion: Their home life wasn't touched upon much in the manga, but given more attention in the anime.
  • Ambiguously Christian: They celebrate Christmas, and Arthur and Sarah get married in a Church.
  • Big Fancy House: The Brighton manor neighbours the Russell's and looks like a castle. Lynn and Sarah are even once invited to go to a party there.
  • Blue Blood: Like the Russells, the Brighton family is also of noble status, though not to the same level of Viscount like the Russells.
  • Chick Magnet:
    • Edward captures the heart of Lynn (who he ends up with), and Vivian (who's feelings he's oblivious to). In the manga, Cathy also had a crush on Edward, but the anime removes this and she remains a Friendy Rival to Lynn.
    • Arthur is adored by many women for being a handsome young man who's famous for his athletics, most prominently Lynn, Mary and Sarah.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Sarah and Arthur knew each other since they were young, and as a teenager, Arthur is Sarah's Only Friend. Lynn also gets along with Arthur (and Sarah even gets kinda jealous at first), and Edward becomes quite fond of her too...
  • Commonality Connection: Arthur, Edward and Lynn bond over their shared love of horses. While Sarah isn't interested, this doesn't stop Arthur from reaching out to her and taking her horseback riding.
  • Declaration of Protection: Sort of. Before George leaves the Marble Mansion, he asks that Edward and Arthur take care of his daughters, and they comply.
  • Disappeared Dad: We never see Papa Brighton, even in the manga. Though he does appear in the sequel manga set 20 years later.
  • Double In-Law Marriage: Sarah ends up with Arthur and Edward ends up with Lynn, the latter even having a pair of twins in the sequel manga.
  • Everyone Can See It:
    • Arthur obviously likes Sarah. He asks to ride with her to celebrate his victory at the horse race and also tends to give her Longing Looks.
    • Edward frequently tries to impress Lynn and deeply cares about what she thinks. Though he's usually a nice guy, making her upset is his Berserk Button, and he'll beat up anyone who makes her cry.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: Edward has his mother's innocent, blue Tareme Eyes.
  • First Girl Wins: Sarah and Arthur met first (obviously, since they're the oldest) and are an Official Couple at the end of the story. Whereas Lynn met Edward when he was riding Alexandra and accidentally scared her, making her cry, and Arthur showed up later. While Lynn had a Precocious Crush on Arthur at first, she later realized he liked Sarah and accepted Edward's feelings later.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Compared to Arthur, who is polite and down-to-earth, Edward is reckless, hot-tempered, and often lets his emotions get the better of him.
  • Gorgeous Gaijin: One arc in the manga has Arthur and Edward go to Japan to see how their old friend Lynn is doing. Both immediately stand out due to their looks, and Maa-kun seethes at how handsome Arthur is and knows that he has no chance against him.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Both Arthur and Edward have blonde hair and do their best to help Lynn and Sarah navigate life in the Marble Mansion with George's departure. When Lynn ran away from home for the first time, Arthur brought her back and carried her as she was knocked out, and when Lynn was beung bullied, Edward stood up for her and tried to get them punished. They both remained friends with the Russells in adulthood as Lynn married Edward and Sarah married Arthur.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Both of the boys have blue eyes, blonde hair, and hearts of gold. They are both very young but have strong senses of justice, and are Lynn and Sarah's protectors against the Waverlys and Duke Warbawn.
  • Lady and Knight:
    • Arthur is the horse-riding, childhood friend-turned-love interest Knight to Sarah, the fragile, delicate Lady who's always sick and needs care.
    • Edward is this to Sarah. He's not as dignified and classy as Arthur, but he's of noble blood and not afraid to speak his mind, and anyone who dares make Lynn upset has to answer to him.
  • Location Theme Naming: They're named "Brighton", after the seaside resort that borders London to the South.
  • Meaningful Name: Their surname is Brighton, and they do indeed have bright blonde hair.
  • Mutual Pining:
    • After the first arc, Lynn pines for Edward, not knowing that Edward likes her back. Because they're both young children, they have trouble spitting it out, even if everyone else can see it.
    • Sarah and Arthur have had feelings for each other ever since they were young. However, Sarah can't spend time with Arthur because her illness confines her to her bedroom, whereas Arthur is unsure if Sarah will accept his feelings because sometimes she can be very cold.
  • Nice Guy: While it's not apparent because of their exteriors (Edward acts boyish and boisterous, while Arthur feels like he has a facade to keep up because of his family name), both are friendly and kind people underneath and like spending time with Lynn.
  • Pretty Boy:
    • Arthur is very handsome, an in-universe heart-throb and has a gentle face and features.
    • Edward post Time Skip grows into a handsome Bishōnen with more elegant features. Lynn secretly likes him.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: In a similar vein to Lynn and Sarah, the younger Brighton sibling is louder and passionate, while the older one is more reserved and polite.
  • Romantic Ride Sharing:
    • Early in the series, Edward and Lynn share one on Alexandra. Despite the fact that she usually hates Edward riding her, Alexandra allows it, and Lynn closes her eyes as she loses herself in the moment...
    • Lynn gains a crush on Arthur after he frequently takes her horseback riding on Alexandra, frrequently imagining him as her Prince Charming on a white horse. While Lynn interprets his actions as romantic, Arthur doesn't, instead viewing Lynn like a little girl who needs protecting rather than a love interest.
    • After Arthur wins a national award, he celebrates by walking towards Mary....and then past her so he can ask Sarah if she wants to ride Alexandra with him. Sarah is stunned, and stammers as she accepts, while Lynn and Edward cheer her on. Arthur then takes Sarah to a beautiful forest in the countryside near the sea.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Arthur is the sensitive guy, being empathetic and trying to mend the rift between the Russell sisters, while Edward is more boorish, playful and obsessed with keeping up his "tough guy" image.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Lynn/Edward: Edward affectionate Lynn a "shrimp", and a lot of his teasing is in an tender manner. He is very protective of Lynn and hates people that bully her, to the point he punched Arthur for bringing Mary as a date to the ball (not knowing that he was blackmailed). Edward also tends to be very klutzy around Lynn, as if he's distracted by her presence. Lynn also frequently blushes around Edward and has Imagine Spots of him. By the end of the anime, this is canon, and the sequel manga reveals that Lynn and Edward had children.
    • Lynn/Arthur: Lynn has a Precocious Crush on Arthur and often dreams of him. In the OP of Hello! Lady Lynn!, Arthur appears, riding his horse, and picks up Lynn. Also, after Mary and Thomas bully Lynn and throw water all over her stuffed rabbit, she cries in Alexandra's stable, and when she sees Arthur and Edward, she calls Arthur's name as she runs into his arms. Sarah also expresses jealousy that Arthur may like Lynn more than her, even though this isn't true. Lynn/Arthur fell to Ship Sinking as Arthur reveals he always loved Sarah. Lynn accepts this, and moves on to pursue Edward.
    • Sarah/Arthur: Arthur was Sarah's Only Friend for years, and when she sees Lynn hanging out with him she becomes instantly envious. She wishes to spend time with him, but can't because of her condition. This doesn't stop Arthur from going to the Russell's house and paying her visits from time to time. In the Grand Finale, Sarah stares at a pool and thinks of Arthur. Just then, Arthur appears and tells her he's always loved her.
  • Shipper on Deck: Arthur ships Lynn/Edward, whike Edward ships Arthur/Sarah, being very happy for them once they're an Official Couple.
  • Sibling Triangle:
    • Both Lynn and Sarah like Arthur. Lynn constantly has imagine spots of him, while Sarah remembers his kindness towards her and how he was her Only Friend for years. Lynn later discovers that Arthur has feelings for Sarah, and accepts them, instead going for his little brother Edward.
    • Exploited by Mary in one episode. She knows Sarah has feelings for Arthur, and tries to turn her against Lynn by insinuating that he'll leave her for Lynn. By then Sarah has gotten over being an Insecure Love Interest (and knows Arthur doesn't like her), so it doesn't work.
  • Single-Target Sexuality:
    • While Lynn had a crush on Arthur first, before eventually changing to Edward, Edward has been in love with Lynn ever since he saw her.
    • No matter how cold and aloof she was, Arthur loved Sarah and wanted to marry her when they became adults.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Both of the boys had privileged upbringings and were surrounded by wealth and luxury ever since they were born, but they're nothing but good hearted and use their power to help those around them.
  • Snooty Sports: They're equestrians who descend from a noble family and their ability to train horses, own a large stable and afford all the caretaking that comes with it is a mark of their wealth. Contrast that to Lynn who couldn't afford her own horse thanks to her family's financial status and only got one thanks to Isabelle's intervention.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both boys have blonde hair and blue eyes (though Arthur's hair is a lighter shade than his brother's), and their mother is a blonde too. As shown in the sequel manga, everyone in their family is a blonde.
  • Tareme Eyes: Both Edward and Arthur have wide, circular, gentle eyes that reflect their curiosity and inquisitiveness.
  • Upper-Class Equestrian: Both the Brightons specialize in horse-riding and have their own individual horses. In the manga, the Brighton brothers were Olympic athletes and partook in horse-racing activities.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: Both Arthur and Edward. Arthur has always liked Sarah and Edward has always had a crush on Lynn. It turns out the Russell girls reciprocate their feelings.

  • The Ace: Arthur is good-looking, from a noble family, beloved by all and also an ace equestrian, with his Animal Companion, Alexandra.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Arthur is well-aware that he attracts women easily, and does his best to let them down gently without being cruel. He doesn't reciprocate the feelings of most women that confess to him, unless their name is Sarah.
  • All-Loving Hero: Arthur believes in Gray And White Morality and is convinced that there's good in everyone. He thought that if he nudged Sarah, she'd accept Lynn (he was right, but he went about it the wrong way) and he even forgave Mary after she demeaned Sarah's illness by comforting her and telling her that she should still strive to be a Proper Lady in spite of his rejection.
  • Animal Companion: He's always seen with his Cool Horse Alexandra. She likes Lynn, but she hates Edward.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: His blonde hair makes him look absolutely dashing, and is a kind, well-mannered gentleman to everyone.
  • Berserk Button: Do NOT insult Sarah. Arthur loves Sarah more than life itself and while he's usually a composed man, implying him and Sarah shouldn't be together or belittle her based on her illness. He hit Mary for implying Sarah would die at a young age and also got into a feud with one of his aunts because she pointed out that Sarah can't have children.
  • Bishie Sparkle: In Lynn's Imagine Spots, Arthur is surrounded by sparkles as he rides Alexandra with her.
  • Bitch Slap: In the manga, after he announces he is going to marry Sarah, Mary runs after him and says she isn't the right one for him "because you don't know when someone like her can die". Arthur loses his temper and slaps Mary across the face.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: A variant. He only agreed to be Mary's date to the ball because Mary threatened to tell Lynn that the Marble Mansion had been sold if he didn't. Arthur couldn't stand the thought of Lynn crossing the Despair Event Horizon so he accepted her offer, even though he looked like he was about to cry the entire time.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He likes Sarah, but cannot say it to her face. That is, until the Grand Finale. In the manga he confesses earlier and the two get married.
  • Happily Married: He marries Sarah in the manga, and Lynn is elated, even if she cries at first. The two become an in-universe Super Couple with pkenty of tabloids reporting on the fact, and embark on a Honeymoon shortly afterwards.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In the first episode, Arthur tries to push Lynn and Sarah's friendship by asking that Sarah accept her flowers. He doesn't realize that Sarah already feels upset at Lynn's presence and just wants to be left alone, and Sarah reacts by destroying the flowers and telling Lynn to go away.
  • Dub Name Change:
  • Like Goes with Like: Arthur is at the center of the Sibling Love Triangle between Lynn and Sarah - Lynn is half-Japanese while Sarah is fully white. Arthur goes for Sarah.
  • Longing Look: He often gazes at Sarah in this manner, even when she's cold to him (albeit a bit sad).
  • Made Out to Be a Jerkass: When Arthur appears as Mary's Knight at Vivian's party, the partygoers assume he made the choice voluntarily, and not because he was being blackmailed by Mary. This causes Lynn to run out of the ball crying and Edward to scold his big brother. When they find out the truth, they apologize to him and recognize that he was just doing it to protect Lynn.
  • Marry for Love: Whenever Arthur is berated for his choice to marry Sarah by the other Brightons, he reacts by saying that he loves Sarah and he doesn't care if she's ill or not - she's still the woman he fell in love with.
  • Prince Charming: Arthur is good-looking, humble, kind and from a noble family. He is this to Lynn in her Imagine Spots, but sadly in Real Life, he has eyes for Sarah.
  • Princely Young Man: If Sarah is a Proper Lady, Arthur Brighton is a proper man. He's always polite and sweet to her, and cares deeply about her due to her illness.
  • Shipper on Deck: He knows his little brother likes Lynn and supports it wholeheartedly.
  • Would Hit a Girl: For Sarah, he'd punch anyone who insults her, even if they have a vagina or not*cough*.

  • Adaptational Hairstyle Change: In the sequel manga, he doesn't have curly hair and broad shoulders. Though to be fair, it takes place twenty years after the end of the second series, so it's natural that his physique would change.
  • Animals Hate Him: Alexandra allows Lynn and Arthur to ride her, but rejects Edward from doing so. Somehow, he manages to ride her when trying to to stop Lynn from returning to Japan.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Edward is prone to being distracted and neglecting paying attention to his surroundings. For example, when him and Lynn were riding Alexandra, he was so focused on the prospect of Romantic Ride Sharing with his crush that he didn't notice Thomas preparing to shoot her with his BB Gun.
  • Babies Ever After: In the sequel manga, Lynn and Edward have twin children, George and Diana. They are the spitting image of their parents, and the plot revolves around them visiting Japan for a short while to learn of their Japanese heritage.
  • Big Brother Worship: He thibks Arthur is the coolest person he's ever met and wants to be an equestrian just like him, even if it's obvious he's not fit for the sport.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: He tends to act high and mighty at times, and often speaks in a way not befitting to a boy from the House of Earls of Brighton.
  • Butt-Monkey: In the first few episodes. He made his debut by being thrown off Alexandra's back, he's often ill-tempered and runs his mouth, and the girl he likes doesn't realize he likes her and likes his sibling. He changes in the next episodes.
  • The Cutie: Believe it or not, he is this. He has his fair share of bashful moments around Lynn and is just as caring to Sarah, even though he's way smaller than her. His mother also figures out he likes Lynn and seems to be open to the idea of it.
  • Dub Name Change: Edward was called Eduardo in the Spanish dub.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rude and hot tempered, but has a good heart and is protective over Lynn.
  • Hey, You!: Edward calls Lynn a "shrimp" more often than not, since she's so small.
  • Lovable Jock: He partakes in a football match in one episode and successfully prevents the ball from being taken. It probably helps that Lynn is cheering him on.
  • Love Makes You Stupid: In an attempt to impress Lynn, Edward trains so much he ends up straining his muscles and needing to go to the hospital. Arthur is impressed, but tells him to take it slow next time.
  • Oblivious to Love: He has no idea of Vivian's feelings for him, and only has eyes for Lynn.
  • Silver Spoon Troublemaker: Downplayed. He isn't a full-on brat, but he can be rude at times and takes Alexandra out without Arthur's permission (which the horse reacts to with anger and by tossing him off her).
  • Wearing a Flag on Your Head: Sometimes he wears a plain white shirt with a Union Jack on it.

The mother of Edward and Arthur.

  • Cool Old Lady: Arthur, Edward, Lynn and Sarah view her as this because she's an absolute ace at playing the piano.
  • Good Parents: Arthur and Edward adore her and are happy when they spend time with her.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Subverted. She has shoulder-length hair but is very feminine and a glamorous noblewoman.
  • Ojou: Goes without saying as the Brightons are of noble blood.
  • Proper Lady: She is everything Lynn strives to be, a beautiful, courageous and kind lady with a compassionate heart.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Madeleine punishes Lynn for alleged misbehaviour, Mrs. Brighton goes to the Marble Mansion and tries to reason with her.

  • Cool Horse: Lynn thinks she's amazing, and bonds with Arthur over their shared love for her. She also rescues an out-cold Lynn in the middle of the blistering winters by leading Edward and Arthur to her.
  • Only the Chosen May Ride: If you're Arthur, Lynn or Sarah? Sure. If you're Edward? Nope, and she'll throw you off her back for trying.
  • White Stallion: She has a white furcoat and a blonde mane.
