Noble Families

Montgomery Family

    As a whole
  • Amazing Technicolor Hair: Jeanne's hair is purple. Her, her daughter and Vivian are the only characters in the anime with this hair colour. Oddly, Isabelle lacks this hair colour.
  • Canon Foreigner: Isabelle, Sophie and Jeanne weren't in the original manga.
  • French Jerk: Not Isabelle, but Jeanne and Sophie. Jeanne is an Abusive Mom who manipulates people to her whims, and Sophie, wanting her approval, goes along with it. She acts sweet and cute on the outside, but quickly establishes herself as a bitch when she repeatedly breaks objects around the manor and sabotages Lynn, all in an attempt to make her look bad in front of Isabelle.
  • Token Good Teammate: Countess Isabelle is the only one of them who's kind-hearted and a gentle soul to Lynn.

Aunts

    Countess Isabelle Montgomery

Countess Isabelle Montgomery

A distant aunt of Lynn's, who she lives with after George loses the Marble Mansion.

  • Cool Aunt: She is admired by Lynn for being a sweet, understanding old lady who's nothing like her racist brother, the Duke. She eagerly hugs Lynn whenever they're together, and Lynn expresses concern for her failing health.
  • Cool Old Lady: Countess Isabelle Montgomery is the mother that Lynn never had. She cares for her and treats her like she's her daughter.
  • Ill Girl: Due to her age, she has an illness, and Lynn is shocked with worry when she sees her collapse.
  • Racist Grandma: Inverted. When the Russells visit the Duke's castle and he refuses to look at Lynn as his grandchild, Isabelle warms up to her, charmed by Lynn's innocence, and acts kindly to her. She does her best to get the Duke to accept her, but isn't successful.

Children

    Sophie Montgomery

Sophie Montgomery

Voiced by: Yuko Mita (Japanese) Other languages

Hailing from France, Sophie is a distant niece of Countess Montgomery's late husband.

  • Abusive Parents: Sophie is subject to constant emotional abuse by her mother and used as a tool for her manipulation towards Isabelle. She often calls her insults and uses a harsh voice whenever talking to her, and it's clear she doesn't love her like a proper mother should.
  • Animal Companion: Sophie has a pet squirrel named Leonard. He functions as her Morality Chain and encourages her to break away from her abusive mom's influence.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She pretends to be sweet and naive on the outside, but actually wants to disgrace Lynn (as per the Countess' orders) to get her hands on her inheritance. Thankfully, she befriends Lynn and decides not to do it.
  • Break the Cutie: Jeanne's abuse has Sophie constantly on the verge of tears, or reduced to tears in some cases. She also breaks down when she tells the truth of her mother to Isabelle.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: She puts up a facade of being an angelic little girl to get away with destroying and stealing things. The fact that she's younger than Lynn certainly helps, and even Lynn herself is fooled by her.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is never seen in the anime. His disappearance is possibly why her mother is desperate to sieze the Russell's assets - she must have taken a huge hit financially after the death of her husband.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: While Jeanne's agenda is to make sure she secures Isabelle's inheritance, Sophie's agenda is to make sure she doesn't get sent back to Boarding School and lives happily with the Montgomeries.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite what her mother told her, Sophie has doubts about harming Lynn because of her genial personality and openness. She even feels bad about trying to cut open one of her horse's saddles, and decides not to do it after thinking about Lynn's sweet face being kind to her.
  • Gone Horribly Right: In one episode, to disqualify Lynn from the Olympic race, Sophie scares Andrews with a squirrel while the Headmaster is watching. To her surprise, Lynn manages to tame him and get him under control. The headmaster is very impressed by Lynn.
  • Green and Mean: She wears a green dress and a yellow bow, and is secretly scheming against the Russells. However, she ultimately decides not to do it and becomes a friend of Lynn in the end.
  • Lonely Doll Girl: Sophie often cuddles with a doll given to her by her abusive mother. At a close up, it's very cleepy and unlifelike.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Paul's birthday episode, Sophie spends the entire party being hoity-toity to Lynn and insinuating she's dirty. Paul is finally sick of her behaviour and blurts out that he didn't want to invite her, but he did so at Lynn's request. Sophie is aghast to hear this and runs off in tears.
  • Regal Ringlets: Sophie's are voluminous and coily, and held by a hair bow.
  • Spanner in the Works: Mary blackmails Lynn by saying she has to withdraw from the tournament, or therwise, she'll make sure her grandfather doesn't grant George the loan needed to buy back the Marble mansion. Lynn wants to put Sarah and George's wellbeing first so she agrees. She tells this to Sophie and asks her to keep it a secret, but Sophie can't bear to see Lynn suffer in silence so she tells everyne. Edward encourages Lynn to go forward with her dreams and they all work together to expose Mary.
  • Well Done Daughter Girl: Sophie has SEVERE issues with her mother Jeanne, who tries to use her as a pawn to inherit the Montgomery fortune and threatens to send her back to her boarding school in France if she doesn't play along, whereas Sophie only wants her mom's love and approval.

Mothers

    Jeanne Montgomery

Jeanne Montgomery

Voiced by: Kazuko Yanaga (Japanese) Other languages

Sophie's mother.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jeane.png
  • Abusive Parents: She frequently screams at and berates her daughter, and threatens to send her back to France if she doesn't play along with her plan to usurp the Russells. Though, she later realizes that she's been horrible, and in the Grand Finale of the show, Jeanne and Sophie are seen hugging as they watch Lynn win the race.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She is undeniably a gorgeous woman with a striking face and gossamer hair, just as she is undeniably an emotionally abusive mother who frequently drives her daughters to tears and blames her for the family's issues.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She presents herself as a sweet Proper Lady to Isabelle and the Russels. Her true intentions are far viler. She's a manipulative child abuser who doesn't care about her daughter. Even Madeleine never stooped that low, though she was a terrible parent in other ways.
  • Expy: Of Madeleine. Both are single mothers with horrible children that antagonize Lynn. But while Sophie eventually made amends with Lynn, Mary continued to belittle and abuse her long after George broke off his engagement to Madeleine.
  • Gold Digger: She seeks Lynn's inheritance, and puts up Sophia to subject her to Malicious Slander. She hoped that if Sophie disgraced Lynn in front of Isabelle, she would reject the girl and use her influence to hand over the Russell's estate to her.
  • Ojou: She is very posh, dresses exquisitely, descends from a wealthy family and favours spending time with her fellow elites. She also travels by limousine, and has a valet open doors for her.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Jeanne explicitly ordered Sophie to debase Lynn in front of the Russells and reacted with anger when she said she didn't want to. She used the fear Sophie had of being sent back to her French boarding school to keep her in place, and gave her further instructions on how to trick the Russells.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Sophie cried from all the pressure and told Isabelle what was happening, Jeanne was ashamed of herself. It was to the point that she couldn't bring herself to face Sophie in person and gifted her things from afar. When Lynn and Sophie were at the stable where Andrews was born, Sophie received a beautiful mare named Florence from an anonymous gifter - it turns out this gifter was Jeanne.
  • Proper Lady: On the outside, she's a very refined and polite lady. And that's where it ends, because her personality is nothing proper or ladylike.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Jeanne is a unnervingly realistic depiction of an emotionally Abusive Mom. She withholds affection from her daughter, uses her as a therapist that she often takes out her anger on, and sets her up as a pawn against people she dislikes. When Sophie asks an innocent question or speaks back to her, Jeanne scolds her until she gives in. Sophie is constantly reduced to tears whenever she's thinking about her. On top of that, she's a Manipulative Bitch who knows Sophie's biggest fear is being sent back to her boading school where she'll be lonely, and threatens her with it to keep her in line.

Other

    King
Sophie's pet squirrel.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonard_5.png
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: After he saves Sophie's life, she fashions a bow out of a red ribbon and ties it around her neck.
  • Adorable Fluffy Tail: As a squirrel, he has a large, puffy striped tail.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Lynn's cats always refused to ackowledge King due to his connection with Sophie. Lynn, however, was always kind to him and once fed him some walnuts, leading him to trust her and view her as a friend.
  • Cuddle Bug: Loves to rub himself against Sophie's cheek after she's revealed her sweeter side to him and Lynn.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: He has large, blue eyes that reflect his innocence and good-hearted nature.
  • Parrot Pet Position: He often sits on Sophie's shoulder or her lap.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: He's a cute fluffy squirrel with big blue eyes.
  • Squirrels in My Pants: Sophie sics him on Andrews, knowing the horse was heavily traumatized by squirrels in the past. He goes awry and runs out of the stable while Lynn is holding his saddle. Lynn ended up badly bruised all over, but managed to calm her.
  • Token Good Teammate: He may be Sophie's pet, but he has a heart of gold. He cares for Lynn, and when he sees Sophie attempt to sabotage her, he intervenes and does his best to stop it. When Sophie falls off a cliff and is gravely injured, King, who witnessed the incident, runs to Lynn and leads her to Sophie. When Sophie leaves for France, she leaves behind King with Lynn, where he continues to perform a messenger-like role between her and her friends.

Spencer Family

    As a whole
  • Amazing Technicolor Hair: Vivian and her mother both have lavish, wavy, gossamer purple hair.
  • Canon Foreigner: Vivian's an anime-exclusive character, though she's based on Sonoko from the manga. Her parents are also anime-original characters.
  • Jerkass: Vivian is a haughty, hot-tempered Alpha Bitch with a complex need to put down Lynn, while her father is very cold and uncaring towards her.
  • Nouveau Riche: Unlike the Russells, who are aristocrats, the Spencer family made their fortune very recently by investing in banks and don't have the class or dignified positions that the Russells have.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Vivian and her mother look like near-identical dolls.

  • Alpha Bitch: The rival variant - she doesn't want to lose her place as top dog to Lynn and views her as an enemy. However, when she falls and Lynn expresses care for her, she realizes that Lynn is a good person underneath and softens towards her.
  • Academic Alpha Bitch: Vivian is Saint Patrick's most skilled equestrian. As she has an authority over the other students, she subjects Lynn, Dorothy and Lara to do humiliating fieldwork and badmouths them in the coach's eyes. She also has Phyllis and Matilda tamper with Andrews and humiliates both him and Lynn at every chance she gets.
  • A Taste of the Lash: Vivian often used a horse-riding whip to flog Andrews.
  • Arc Villain: Perhaps villain is a stretch, but she's Lynn's biggest rival, is utterly cruel to her, has her Girl Posse sabotage her and works with Mary to prevent her from winning the Lady's Crest.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: She abused Andrews heavily while he was in her custody and wanted to put him down when he wasn't useful to her anymore.
  • Battered Bouquet: A variant as she didn't destroy roses that were gifted to her, but rather destroy some in a vase out of frustration with her rod while thinking about her hatred of Lynn.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's regarded as a very beautiful woman by many, and is often followed around by an adoring Girl Posse that view her as near-ethereal. However, as Lynn learns, she's not someone to be looked up to.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Vivian planned to compete at the Great Britain Olympics qualifier in the equestrian sports category. A few days before the event, Mary sabotaged her equipment, and Vivian ended up sustaining severe injuries. Thankfully, they don't seem to be permanent, but she was no longer able to ride a horse due to needing crutches and breaking her arm.
  • Death Glare: She does not hide her hatred towards Lynn and is prone to coldly glaring at her.
  • The Dreaded: To Andrews. When he sees her for the first time since she let him go, he freezes because he has a flashback of how she whipped and abused him.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: When Vivian fell off her horse and broke her arm, Lynn was blamed for it. However, when it was found out that it was Mary who cut the reins of her horse to stop her from winning the Lady's Crest, she was furious and gave Mary a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, and declared her friendship with Lynn.
  • Expy: Of Sonoko Ichijuuin from the manga, down to the Et Tu, Brute? twist at the end. The main difference is that Sonoko was a fully Japanese student in Japan, while Vivian is a British girl from England.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Vivian is initially threatened by Lynn's friendship of her former horse Andrews (given how he was difficult to tame in spite of his great skill), and hates Lynn even more for having Edward's heart. Hence her willingness to partner up with Mary and throw her under the bus to be the center of attention again.
  • Last-Minute Hookup: It's implied that she later got together with Philip Anderson, the captain of the St. Patrick Academy boys' equestrian club who tends to look at her longingly.
  • Kick the Dog: She was a terrible owner to Andrews and abused him regularly, and she also dissuades Lynn from competing with her by coldly glaring at her whenever they're in class.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Knowing that Andrews is traumatized by her very presence, Vivian shows up when Lynn is riding him during an obstacle course. He's terrified of her and stalls for a while, before deciding to carry Lynn anyway. Vivian also gets Mathilda and Phyllis to thwart Lynn from winning the Lady's Crest through various means, particularly by antagonizing Andrews. She also offers to mentor Cathy, who beats Lynn for the national qualifier, but Cathy declines.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: When Mary is returning to England from Switzerland, Vivian's father (a good friend of Mary's grandfather) asks Vivian to host her in their house. Vivian agrees, and Mary repays her by giving her a Career-Ending Injury.
  • Rich Bitch: The Spencers are wealthy family who have a history of working in the banks, and Vivian is an Upper-Class Equestrian with a nasty attitude.
  • The Rival: To Lynn, as they're both skilled equestrians that have eyes for Edward. Mary knows that Vivian is the likeliest to get the Lady's Crest, so she sets her up against Lynn. When Vivian falls off her horse and it's revealed the reins were cut, Lynn is blamed and disqualified (when it was actually Mary who did it). Edward and Arthur put two and two together and tell Vivian that Lynn is innocent. Vivian feels stupid for letting Mary use her, and tells the Principal that Lynn deserves to compete in the tournament. He allows it.
  • School Idol: She's one of St. Patrick's most successful students and many believe she will win the Lady's Crest.
  • Spanner in the Works: After finding out Mary's plan, she asks her father to help the Russells, and provides proof Mary sabotaged her. Mr. Spencer talks to Mr. Reynolds and tells him what happened. Disgusted by his niece, he decides to help the Russells...as long as Lynn wins the race.
  • Upper-Class Equestrian: Vivian is the star student of St. Patrick's academy and a skilled equestrian. The Spencers are also an extremely well-off family.

Vivian's father, and a wealthy banker.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spencer_60.png
  • Abusive Parents: He doesn't hit Vivian, but he's certainly very dismissive to her. One has to wonder if her attitude towards being the best is a result of his parenting.
  • Parental Neglect: He is so preoccupied with work that he doesn't seem to care at all about Vivian's concerns. When she tells him what Mary did, he ignores her as if she's a distraction to him.

Saint Patrick's School

Saint Patrick's School

    As a whole
  • Cool School: It allows it's students to practice equestrian riding (Lynn's favourite sport) and has a whole field dedicated to it, as well as fields dedicated to other sports like tennis and hockey.
  • Cool Teacher: Every teacher at Saint Patrick's Academy is nurturing and dedicated to helping their students grow, there's not a single Dean Bitterman, and it's also implied Lynn has a crush on her horse-riding teacher.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Lynn, Vivian, Mary, Paul and Catherine all attended Saint Patrick's School, a school for the British elite, and are all good friends in their later years (except Mary).
  • Intra-Scholastic Rivalry: At Saint Patrick's Academy, the student that brings the most honour to the school is awarded the Order of the Lady's Crest. As a result, certain students form cliques dedicated to bagging it, with Mary Waverly desperate to sabotage Lynn so she can get it for herself.
  • Popular Is Evil: The most popular girl is Vivian, an animal abuser and a petty Alpha Bitch, and her clique includes her cronies. Though Philip and Lynn invert this trope.

  • Canon Foreigner: They weren't present in the manga, but they have some similarities to Mana, Lynn's friend from her school in Japan.
  • Cheerful Child: The two often titter in excitement when they're around one another, and think Lynn is awesome.
  • Dub Name Change: Dorothy became Dorothée in the French dub.
  • Expy: Both of them are based on Mana from the manga, and Lara even looks like the spitting image of Mana.
  • Flat Character: Dorothy and Lara have the exact same monotone personality; they're Lynn's best friends at school who encourage her to follow her dreams. We don't know what their personal motivations are, what skills they have at the school, who their other friends are and their own personal lives. The only thing that makes them stand out from the rest of the class is their proximity to Lynn.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Both of them have bright blue eyes and are happy-go-lucky children.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Dorothy wears a pink hairband.
  • Satellite Character: Everything they do is hinged around Lynn and her dreams of winning the Lady's Crest, amongst slice-of-life shenanigans.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Dorothy wears a hairband, and Lara ties her hair with yellow bows.
  • Those Two Girls: Are always seen together.

Mathilda and Phyllis
  • Beta Bitch: They sabotage Lynn as per Vivian's orders.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Subverted, as Mathilda has red hair, Phyllis is a blonde, and Vivian's hair is purple.
  • Canon Foreigner: Like Vivian, they didn't appear in the manga.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In one final attempt to sabotage Lynn, Vivian and Phyllis scare Andrews from his stable and he runs to a park, but he's found by Sarah. Coach Jim realizes that they had something to do with it since Mathilda's pendant was found at the stable.
  • Girl Posse: To Vivian. They follow her around and parrot praise about her wherever she goes.
  • Miss Exposition: We learn about Vivian's feats through Phyllis and Mathilda's constant praise of her.
  • Those Two Girls: Are always seen together, as if they're single-minded clones.
    Phillip Anderson

  • All Love Is Unrequited: He has a crush Vivian, but she was smitten by Edward ever since she first saw him.
  • Dub Name Change: Philippe in the French dub.
  • Expy: To an extent, he's based on Hiroyuki from the manga because of his proximity to Vivian, who's based on Sonoko.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has blonde hair and recognizes Vivian's toxic attitude, and is also supportive of Lynn.
  • Identical Stranger: Looks eerily like George.
    Catherine Baker

  • Adaptational Personality Change: In the manga, Cathy eventually abandoned being a tomboy in favour of being more feminine, and declared her love for Edward, rivalling Lynn for it. In the anime this is cut out.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Both Cathy and Lynn want the Lady's Crest, and don't hold anything against each other for it.
  • Graceful Loser: Cathy is this when her, Lynn, Barbara, Anne and Betty hold a second National Qualifier race and Lynn wins while riding Andrews.
    Paul

Paul

Voiced by: Tsutomu Kashiwakura (Japanese) Other languages

  • Birthday Episode: One episode has Lynn throw Paul a birthday party at her house, with Sophie in attendance. She spends most of it being rude to Lynn, angering Paul until he yells at her to stop.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Ice-cold blue eyes, reddish hair, and a free-spirited nature that matches with Lynn's playfulness.

Other

    Lady's Crest
A prize given to the student of Saint Patrick that brings the school the most honour, presented once every year.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_6.png
  • Canon Foreigner: The Lady's Crest (and it's subplot) is an anime-only addition and wasn't in the original manga.
  • Gem-Encrusted: Has a shiny red gemstone in the middle.
